Villains are like that. They believe everybody's guilty of something somehow. You can tell the screen writer of this movie wrote several James Bond movies. This Lex Luther has a great evil lair and has a very much ridiculous evil scheme. He's no different from the villains Roger Moore faced at the time in the 1970's. Being a fan of both characters, I love it.
@jedijones
@jedijones 4 года назад
Yeah, the Bond films were the prototype for Star Wars, Indiana Jones and Superman in many ways and, since those movies themselves have gone onto influence so many others, it's inconceivable to think what the modern movie landscape would look like if a Terminator went back in time and took out Ian Fleming before he was born.

I do like the part where Luthor says he's bought up "worthless desert land" for mere pennies -- then, after he explains about activating the faults, the massive earthquake to follow, and the subsidence of the CA coast (making Luthor's land the new seafront), he smashes his stick onto the plexiglas map and it makes a shatter mark.
@1AstralKing
@1AstralKing 2 года назад
Slight difference in that the Moore villains were always portrayed as cartoonish where Lex, despite being a comic character, is played decidedly straight. The whole premise of this movie is that “You Will Believe…..” Even the most fantastic elements of the story are crafted such that they appear real. Such elements were lacking with Moore’s Bond, which was pure escapism - maybe the purest. Part of the glory of Gene is that he makes you believe that his Lex is a real person with the true goal of accomplishing what he sets out to do. You lose yourself in the story and have to force yourself to think, “Hey, wait a minute…”

I can understand Lex deducing that the meteorite is from the same planet as Superman, based on the fact that they both landed on Earth at about the same time. But when he deduces that the radioactive meteorite can kill people from the same planet as itself way faster than it kills people from other planets, that crosses a line from genius-level I.Q. to psychic intuition. It would have been a lot more plausible if Lex tested his hypothesis - which he technically did, but only after his premature display of confidence in this scene.

He was only onscreen for a few seconds but you understood he was an intelligent, competent guy with a little too much on his plate (Polly Holliday as the secretary who tried to keep Mr. BernSTINE out of his office completed that picture). Wonder how they measured the speed and velocity of the meteorite and calculated the trajectory to earth from krypton
@RocKnight11
@RocKnight11 Год назад
I think the fragments of Krypton followed the same path Kal-El's spacecraft took to Earth inadvertently being pulled by the ship engery.
@JohnSmith-pl4sf
@JohnSmith-pl4sf Год назад
@@RocKnight11 its not like the ship had a gravitational belt, but luthor does make sense to think that some of those dusted parts drifted to earth with him, considering that Luthor's astronomy is not rusty and that he's been watching star wars, well that answers that but how did luthor know where the kryptonite landed? And how did he know it was lethal to superman, you know the writers should've made this more logical when it came to that,
@RocKnight11
@RocKnight11 Год назад
@John Smith Well, I'm not familiar with Kryptonian spacecraft, but maybe Kal-El's ship did have one of those gravity belt thingies. After all, if the ship had to use FTL technology to get to Earth, some of the Kryptonite debris had to get sucked into the possible wormhole created by the spaceship just to reach Earth. As for how Lex knows Kryptonite is harmful to Supes and where it landed... well, my theory would be that Lex probably remembers reading a science article about this strange non-lethal radioactive meteorite that landed in Addis Ababa years ago and assumes it's from Krypton. Since Superman is immune to conventional radiation, yet radiation from Kryptonite is relatively harmless to humans, Lex probably theorizes (and rightly so) that Kryptonite is harmful to Superman.

How could Lex Luthor be lumbered with such as numb-skull as Otis and yet still believe he's a world-class criminal mastermind?! Any world-class criminal mastermind would have NOTHING to do with Otis or his ilk, surely?

Ok, always wanted to know this...maybe somebody can explain...in this scene Lex Luthor says the planet Krypton exploded in 1948 and it took 3 years for baby Kal-El to get to Earth right? Ok, so, why is it when Superman is in the Fortress of Solitude, Jor-El says that he (Jor-El) has been dead for many thousands of Earth years?
@christiandenault7606

He was probably referring to Krypton years, not Earth years.
@SeedFactoryProject

Time dilation. If Krypton was thousands of light years away, it took that long for the light from the explosion to reach Earth. But the ship was traveling near the speed of light, so only 3 years passed for Kal-El. This is true for every star we see in the sky. We see it as it *was* when the light left it, not as it is "today"

For a supervillian, Lex Luthor's two associates are neither bright nor evil enough that they would have been villains if they had never met Lex. I like the cartoons with the Legion of Doom. Then it was an entire council of 13.

How do they know that the meteorite in adas abba ba was from Kryton. It could be from any planet in the universe.

Deductive reasoning would assume that, since the rocket came from Krypton, the radioactive leftovers of his dead planet could've also made it to Earth. The meteor was found the same year that Clark said he arrived here, so the possibility that the meteor is of Kryptonian origin is highly likely.

This Lex Luthor is a just normal criminal who creates a serious disaster that becomes the climax of the movie where the whole state of California is endangered and Lois is killed.

MMAFighter38 Throw out that POS Supergirl movie where she came from inner space. If you follow the comics or the TV shows, she was also from Krypton. She was sent to Earth at the same time as Kal-El to watch after him, but something happened. She arrived on Earth later. The Supergirl series on the CW has their own version of events and it isn’t a bad show, but I liked Smallville’s version better.

I love Gene Hackman...but Michael Rosenbaum of the TV show "Smallville" was the greatest Lex Luthor. Michael Rosenbaum's 'Lex Luthor' was deeper, serious, and more nuanced and complex of a character than the almost absurd bumbling Gene Hackman version.
