This is so true. My mother hand-stitched all hems better than any blind hem machine. The only hems that are done by machine are blue jeans/ topstitching. And yes , her garments were just as beautiful inside as outside. The overlock is useful and does make the garment neat . Overlocked seams are important of you are machine laundering. Some finishing just has to be done by hand, especially turned/ lined items. Patterns / nap velvet, corduroy , etc. MUST match. Greetings from New York City. 👍🏼🇵🇷🗽😃

Lovely tips! I was hand stitching the hem of my '50s inspired circle skirt lining while listening 🙂

I always hand sew. It is difficult and slow, but I like to make older garments and it makes it feel that much more personal.

I have come to enjoy hand sewing a lot more than when I first started to sew. My early problem was that my hand sewing needle was too big and I didn't do a good enough job with it. The thinner the needle the more I enjoy hand sewing. Hand sewing can be very relaxing, meditative. I have really grown to like it.

That's a perfect attitude and approach to have. There are a multitude of hand sewing needles too, so remember to pick one appropriate for your fabric! Happy sewing x

Self taught hand sewer myself could never find others interested or knowledgeable. Most prefer machines. Personally I much more prefer sewing by hand. Very relaxing an mediative. My hands don't have bobbin issues EVER!! Stitching to me looks nicer as well. I had an older lady 70-80 trying to tell me the skirt I had in had was NOT sewn by hand..."Honey...no....I know machine sewing...trust me it's machine sewn.". I thought my stitches liked awful at first till that day. I nicely told her "I can assure you it's sewn by hand I'm the one sewing it.". She took a double take an investigated the stitches...."you did this by hand...those are good stitches!"

I always hand stitch zippers, understitching, hems. Also facing a curved or bulky hem really elevates your sewing. Especially if you use silk for the facing, but I realize that is not always possible.

I would like to add to your excellent points, do not neglect staystitching. Staystitching helps preserve the line of a curved area, such as the neckline, through many wearings of a garment.

Please! I love hand-sewing! Yes, very "everything" people complain about and even hate, I get it. Yet, how very satisfying to create and hand-stitch one-of-a-kind beautiful garments! I guess l am a minority in this perspective; however, I am so very, very satisfied in the outcome of it all.

But I don’t like finishing the seams with binding or French seams , because it adds to the bulk and won’t lay as flat. But I don’t like the overlocked either

There's nothing stopping you (as the designer, woop woop!) from inventing your own technique and sampling a few? What about hemming the edges with a dainty rolled hem before sewing your panels together? Pinking shears. Sealing a textile with a lighter (please take care). The world is your playground as I like to say! x

I have a fashion show coming up and most of my garments were pre-made and all my models are 3 or 4 sizes smaller....any tips on how to quickly do alterations?

The front of your hair is so distracting. I have seen this “style” a lot lately and think it unflattering.
