The 2018 Daycruiser 144 by Midwest Automotive Designs is the closest thing you may ever experienced to a private business jet on wheels. Based on the 144 inch wheelbase Mercedes Sprinter chassis this van's length is under 20 feet but still manages to seat 8 passengers belted and still make room for a bed, small galley and bathroom. It's an amazing feat of design and engineering that is only matched by its feeling of sheer luxury.
As you step into the van you're immediately taken by the rich burled wood overhead cabinetry and luxurious leather Maybach captains chairs front and mid van - 4 total. Each captain's chair features arm rests, head rests and is heated with massage controls. There's a large 28 inch LCD flat panel TV mounted above the cab for rear passenger entertainment and the two jumps seats behind the passenger captains' chairs convert into a small bed. In the very back of the van is a wall of hand polished burled wood and a door that leads into the rear lavatory. There's push button flush for the toilet on the driver's side, a roof vent and ducted air conditioning and heat in the bathroom as well. A small galley with sink and microwave and refrigerator are on the passenger side. Yes, the galley and the toilet share the same space. It's an odd arrangement but forgivable considering we are in a van that is 19 feet 6 inches in length. There is a floor layout option that moves the galley into the main coach but you'll lose a jump seat and the corresponding bed will be smaller as well.
Because the Daycruiser does have a bathroom, galley and bed it is technically a recreational vehicle, at least according to the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association (RVIA). The RVIA doesn't specify how large the bed should be nor does it specify that a stove is required. Hence, the Daycruiser 144 is by definition an RV - at least according to the RVIA. That doesn't mean you can or should take it camping. In fact you probably wouldn't.
The Daycruiser 144 is missing some important things that would make it an acceptable RV for camping: It lacks any windows that open other than the two front windows in the cab. It lacks any roof ventilation in the main coach except for the small vent fan in the rear bathroom. It doesn't have an independent coach heater or air conditioner. It does have a secondary HVAC system controlled from the cab but the engine needs to be running for this secondary HVAC system to operate. Not the best situation for camping. Finally, there is no dining table nor is there an option for roof solar. No, you're not going to use this van for camping.
What you are going to use the Daycruiser 144 for is touring. And touring in luxury. With its ability to seat 8 passengers; a short length that makes parking in standard spaces in any city; and RV conveniences like a microwave, refrigerator, sink, bathroom and bed this is the ultimate touring coach. I applaud Midwest Automotive Designs for its sheer audacity in building the Daycruiser and expanding the definition of what an RV can be. This coach is an ideal replacement for any family looking for a large SUV or van. It offers massive passenger carrying capacity in an quality built, luxurious form. What's better, because the van is classified as an RV, you can finance it as a second home. What could be better than that?
The Daycruiser 144 isn't for everybody. It's not a camping van but it is a new kind of RV designed for the needs of a changing marketplace. I highly recommend the Daycruiser 144 to any family or business looking for a touring coach that seats 8 passengers and gives you all the conveniences of an RV.

This is so important. Almost none of reviewers have reviewed this type of RV. I always look for an RV for family to travel with where you can go cross country in comfort and look forward to their compliments. Manufacturers never focus on this side of market. It’s always 4 seater and 2 beds for $110,000++. Doesn’t make sense for normal person who wants to bring friends or family. That’s a very important point that with few adjustments and added length this would be a dream ride for adventures. I am so glad you worked towards reviewing this build. Your effort for viewers is much appreciated.

Thank you very much. I’m really glad that you appreciate the effort that I go through to try to find RVs to review that are popular but also sometimes hard to fine. There are different needs in the market in different types of buyers and I want to make sure some buyers who are not addressed while on RU-vid can at least find a decent review of an RV they may be looking for.

Yes, I'm one of the people with an issue with the toilet around food/cooking.
@Ultramobility

Yeah, the galley is really for snacks. Its not really setup for camping so in that sense in my opinion it is less of a problem (but still a problem if you know what I mean). I really think if they could reverse the door hinge on the bathroom so that it opened in such a way as to create a wall between the toilet and the galley this would go a long way. something for them to consider.

Thank you for introducing the Midwest Automotive Design product line. They have so many floorplans and options to choose from. They have a few on the 144 wheel base, 4 wheel drive, all wheather, etc. I called Jason Sullivan at Midwest and he helped research which model would be best for me. We found a 2017 Midwest Automotive Weekender MD4 Lounge with only 3K miles. I bought it! I drove it 3k miles back to San Jose, I slept, showered, cooked and ate in it! What a beautiful RV! Thank you Jason Sullivan at Midwest Automotive Design and thank you Ultramobilty for introducing Midwest through your reviews!

I love this! It would be a dream to take family trips in this. Yes, the combo restroom/kitchen is an issue, great comment on the door would be better if it opened up the other direction. But this is a travel VAN (not RV) that would allow someone to cook a snack, grab a drink or if needed... use the restroom without stopping. Clearly this is intended for the family that plans on staying in hotels when they travel, or used by 1-2 people who needed it only for occasional use or in emergencies when a hotel could not be found. We used to take road trips in our SUV, it’s seats all folded down to make a functional bed if needed. We only used it as a bed a few times in a pinch, but it WORKED! I think this is great!

Couldn't agree with you more this vehicle is awesome. Back in January I was at the Florida super RV show they had a Midwest automotive design Passage, now this vehicle has what I like. It had lithium batteries, solar panels, and a induction plate for cooking those are three things I look for now. Going to head to Elkhart Indiana next month see if I can get a factory tour.

Another great job Neil. We very seriously considered a class B with Midwest Automotive but not enough storage & other camping needs. We ended up choosing a Galleria (we pick it up next week!) but are having all 4 front seats heated with massage functions because we loved that so much in the Midwest class B.

Hope you come across one for a test / review :) Thank you Neil!

Ryan I would love to review the Passage 144. I like it too but Midwest Automotive is difficult to communicate with. They often times don't return calls or emails. If you the viewers want me to review them then let them know that they need to work with me. Otherwise, I have to move on to other makes and models where I can interview the coach builder and return useful information to you guys, my viewers. Sorry about that.

I kinda swept through this video as well not knowing anything about Midwest Automotive. I stumble in the 2018 Chinook MB4 but they seem to be disappearing. Then I found out Midwest makes them. That's when I found the MD4 as American Patriot MD4 Lounge, Passage MD4 lounge and the Weekender MD4 Lounge. I'll make it part of my negotiation that they give access to one.

I have this van and the toilet/frig door is the first thing I reversed. I bought the van February 2017 in Sacramento. Only one available then in 144 wheel base. Didn’t know till I got home the awning had been ripped off probably from a low hanging tree. Can’t recommend that dealer but love the van. Strictly a touring coach. No AM on radio/gps and district rep told me it didn’t come with AM. Liar. Just wasn’t wired correctly. All fixed now and love it. Has solar WiFi direct tv. Too much I can’t use it all.
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
Hi, Susan! Does reversing the door help to separate the two spaces? Did you purchase from LaMesa? What didn't you like about the dealer? Did you put the solar on? I was told they didn't have a solar option. how do you use the van? very curious as I find this van quite interesting.
@susanhoward2466
@susanhoward2466 6 лет назад
Ultramobility no it was not la Mesa and I wouldn’t name the dealer as I had to get my attorney to rectify situation. I use the van for driving not camping. That’s why I wanted the shorter wheel base. The van was equipped with solar when I got it. I think it might have been a sort of prototype as it has everything. It wasn’t until I returned home and went to show my husband the push button awning to discover it was gone and satellite and roof antenna scratched.

Yes a stunning van, though it does seem to be confused at to what it really is. Multi passenger carrier? A RV but only one smallish bed, which seems pointless with that passenger capacity. No shower, small kitchen. If you want to carry around lots of people, I'm sure you can get almost as much luxury but cheaper. Yes, it is unique and a quality build by the look of it, but I do wonder how much of a market would there really be for a 'half this, half that' van. Thanks for the video!
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
hi birreboi. i think they wanted to classify it as an rv so that buyer could purchase a fantastic, Maybach like touring van and finance it over 30 years like a house. honestly that's what I think.

@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
hi ben. the bed's dimensions are not listed on their site but it is small. i'd say maybe 54 inches by 63 or something like this. here's what's listed on their site regarding warranty: "3 Year/36,000 Mile Basic Limited Warranty 5 Year/100,000 Mile Limited Outer-Body Warranty 5 Year/100,000 Mile Diesel Engine Warranty" not sure what all that means...
@ipadhomeemail
@ipadhomeemail 6 лет назад
Thanks Neil. Really appreciate for your prompt reply. So the bed is really quite small then, maybe it is designed for kids only. In that case your RV is still a better choice. I was told Midwest Auto Design were acquired by a bigger company, maybe things will continue to change (including their confusing warranty terms)!
@Ultramobility
@Ultramobility 6 лет назад
yes it's more of a place to nap. i think they just put a bed in so that the van would qualify for rv financing (versus standard automotive financing). if you're looking for a true camping van, then this van is not it. Midwest was acquired last year(?) by REV. which also owns Monaco, American Coach, Fleetwood and Renegade RV. In fact it looks like Midwest might make some models for American Coach (American Patriot model) as the cabinetry looks the same.

Nice to see them using the short wheel base for some of their designs. I didn't know about them building this size. I see the Passage model on their website has a couple more typical layouts. I'm wondering if that high quality also means heavier? So I want to find out what the OCCC is. My recent travels have not been in an rv unfortunately. But as I went I was thinking quite a bit about what size class B would I be able to get away with.

no not really an rv - -technically yes but not in practicality.

This a long distance people hauler with the convenience of a bathroom for no stops. It's also convenient for rappers to screw clueless fans while on the move. No thank you. I'm still waiting on class B with a luxurious european interior.

Anti Petrolhead - oh dear about rappers! Check out the Envy built in California on the Nissan chassis. It is more European.

So elegant in the front coach, toilet in the kitchen, not so much in the back. No thanks.

that toilet in the kitchen is a very strange idea isn't it?

Using precious space for seating 8 people is ridiculous

Hi, Andrea. It's not meant as a camper van. It's a touring coach with rv amenities. Different market. There are buyers out there looking for a minivan or large SUV to carry 8 passengers. The Daycruiser gives them that seating capacity plus rv conveniences like a bathroom and galley. plus you can finance this as a second home (which isn't possible when purchasing a car). I think it's an interesting market but definitely for a niche buyer - not for everyone. Thanks for your comment.

no it's not. it has uses for family who takes their kids to sports or dance or any competitions. Grandparents included.
