Lyle Lovett: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

For all of Lyle Lovett's considerable artistic gifts - a distinctive voice, easygoing charisma, rare talent for wordplay - his greatest attribute may be the way he radiates infectious calm. He's a one-time tabloid fixture who writes wry, bittersweet songs of longing, but Lovett in person is like a vortex into which stress and drama disappear. That's especially true now that he's fulfilled his obligations to his longtime record label: Lovett not only showed up at NPR Music's offices without an entourage, but also booked his Tiny Desk Concert himself, emailing us out of the blue to express his interest. (Our reply: "We would only agree to have you perform a Tiny Desk Concert if it's under any conceivable circumstance.")
So it's appropriate that Lovett would open this performance at the NPR Music offices by performing "Cowboy Man," the first track on his 1986 debut: He may be a music-industry veteran, but in many ways, he's starting over. With a fresh-faced accompanist in fiddler and backup singer Luke Bulla, Lovett gives a loose, engaging performance that feels like both an introduction and a victory lap.
He follows "Cowboy Man" with two songs from 1989's Lyle Lovett and His Large Band, so this is no mere promotional appearance. With nothing in particular to promote - though he did put out an album of covers, Release Me, earlier in the year - Lovett seems motivated primarily by the sheer joy of playing his songs. His pleasure is infectious. --STEPHEN THOMPSON

Once saw him in St David's Hall in Cardiff. Sadly there were only about 20 of us in the audience. He got everyone to take seats close to the stage and proceeded to give a wonderful intimate concert with requests included. Wonderful guy and have huge respect for him.

What I love about Lyle Lovett is the fact that when he is in public, he is always well dressed, HIGHLY mannered and never acts like he is better than anyone else. TRULY humble and appreciative. Can't be a better gentleman than that!

So quite awhile ago I asked my wife what she wanted for her Bday. She said Lyle Lovett tickets. I thought "well this is going to suck" but that's what the lady wanted, he just wasn't my kind of music. To this day that was one of the best concert I have ever been to. From start to end it was totally awesome!

Timber, you have a wife with excellent taste for music. I've traveled all over the country to see Lyle and his Large Band. 10+ instruments to make up the large band, and of course you realize his wit, and hopefully danced wildly when they played "Church". I had the opportunity to see him at Carnegie Hall, with the Harlem Gospel Choir.

I had the same thing happen to me with an Eric Clapton concert in the late '80s....( won the tickets in a promotion and took my then-wife. Both of us not expecting much and, man, we're we wrong) However, as time has passed and age has refused to relent, I find Eric Clapton beginning to wane and Lyle Lovett beginning to wax in my personal listening preference

My husband took me to see Lyle play at Bass Hall in FTW TX on my birthday about 15 years ago. I thoroughly enjoyed the show but was a bit distracted because I kept waiting for Lyle to wish me a Happy Birthday from the stage! Because that's something my husband would have done, just not that time. 😏 I still considered myself a very fortunate wife and Lyle Lovett fan that night. I come back to this concert often to watch Lyle be Lyle. And that fiddle player....wow.

First time I met Lyle, I had no idea who he was. I bought a pedal steel guitar from his band‘s pedal steel player. The second time I met him after a concert he gave at a tent festival in Germany. It started to rain in the middle of a ballad. The rain on the tent was louder than the music. Lyle stopped in the middle of the song and cracked a joke. Then he asked his audience if it was OK to turn up the volume a little bit. That was when I realized that his music wasn‘t as loud as with most other bands at the festival - and that it was so much more enjoyable, as you could actually appreciate the nuances and the quality of the music. When I talked to him after the show, he was worried about the rain incident and the audience not getting everything they came for. Wow. What an artist and true entertainer and nice person at that.

There is a great moment in the video when Lyle recognizes Luke's pure control over his craft. He does it with a subtle little smile as if to say "damn this kid can play!" during an impressive section of Luke's solo (11:00). Two musicians that embody what it means to be artists!

In this charming little NPR concert he plays with Luke Bulla , who , like Lyle , is an outstanding , talented artist . They both make it sound so easy as they gently take you on that soft and lovely ride . Thanks guys for the delicious treat . I'm going to be looking for more stuff from Luke ; he's an amazing talent . So cool , so controlled , so smooth , so enjoyable . Thanks NPR for this amazing , intimate Tiny Desk concerts . @@@ronmercer7853-Have you been to a Lyle Lovett concert? Lyle talks a lot and tells stories between songs and always makes a connection with his audience. I've seen him 6 times now and twice with John Hiatt. Great story telling in song and between sets. What cracks me up? Lyles dry witty sense of humor and his graciousness. It's a lost art of talking to an audience and drawing them in and making them feel like they are in their living room.

I would see listings for Lyle Lovett & Leo Kottke on tour thinking "who are these guys they keep promoting, never heard of them before... weird"... local alternative station WXRT would play early Lovett songs and I was hooked... Lovett seemed so alternative to not only late 80s country, but late 80s ANYTHING. Lyle was a clearly masterful songwriter & artist with his big band and storytelling humorist sensibility. In 1989 friends were going to see Rickie Lee Jones but I hadn't really been a fan... when my friends asked me to join them I turned the ticket down... after weeks of asking me to join them my friend finally said "your guy Lyle Lovett is opening for Rickie"... well, that was all it took, a chance to see this brilliant new country folk jazz artist! But I then learned how beautiful and brilliant Rickie Lee Jones was and became a big fan of her as well... still seems like just the other day.

I worked at a rock radio station in to 80s in Texas. We played Lyle ❤ Just never knew which section to find him in the record store.

What an amazing talent these two share. Lyle's music and words speak to my heart, funny, touching; he has such rare qualities combined.I cannot get enough. I do not have a trained ear, but Luke sounds amazing. This 17 plus minutes is an absolute joy. Thank you for the music.

If you know how connected Lyle Lovett's career is with Guy Clark's, the vortex of calm comment at 7:10 ("Pretend like this is going well.") might remind you of a closing comment from Guy's show's: "Y'all have been real sweet about this whole thing."

Second time I’ve seen this posting in as many months. Enjoying it even more the second time! Luke B on violin is a revelation: authentic, old-timey and contemporary at the same time. Amazing!

That was so great. "Good Intentions" was especially cool watching the violinist making it up as he went along.

Trinity Klein Lutheran Church in Klein, Texas (north of Houston). He only comes down here every Christmas and Easter, but that's about it. He's probably in New York recording music most of the other times. He grew up in the Spring/Klein community and went to high school here as well

I saw him once in concert in Vancouver BC and he was 2 minutes “late” and he apologized! He was amazing, he was charming and humble and it was one of the best concerts I ever attended. His professional approach and his humor was genuine and people just loved him.

Lyle Lovett is an under-appreciated genius. I like his style, sense of humor & musicality. His fiddle player complements his singing perfectly.

Lucky you - this is the best of this series. This set also serves as a fine illustration of why Lyle is sometimes referred to as a "vortex of calm."

Lyle is up there with Tom Waits and Lucinda Williams..... the mix of captivating and poetic lyricism and incredible sense of melody in one person is extremely rare. A brilliant performer; loved him since I saw him and his Large Band support Dire Straits at Cardiff in June '92.

Lyle is one of the torchbearers of pure country, and Luke must have Jason Carter as an influence because that fiddle playin' is smokin' hot (and that voice too)
