Lyle is such an underrated and brilliant Songwriter. I’ve seen him several times. One of the benefits of seeing the large band is that I’m looking at a bunch of legends. The bass player is Lee Sklar and the drummer is Russ Kunkel. These guys are studio cats crafted of solid gold, they have played on half the hit records ever recorded. And lovett ain’t not so bad himself. The fact that they keep coming back to play with Lyle says a whole lot about Lyle and his talent.
I met Lyle checking into a hotel on a business trip many years ago. He was ahead of me. I am a big fan and had a big smile. He turned around introduced himself and thanked me for listening to his music. A very kind soul.
Class act. You never want to invade their privacy but a small nod is usually appreciated. I did this with Chris Smithers in Berkeley CA in a restaurant. I simply nodded and said quietly “great show”!!
I've seen Lyle 5 or 6 times, mostly with his large band, and once in a Barnes & Noble in downtown Chicago after Step Inside This House had just been released. For anyone that ever wondered how he caught Julia Roberts, let me tell you his charisma in that intimate B&N setting had 100% of all those downtown Chicago gals' attention. He is a songwriter par excellence, humble, funny as heck, understated and a class act.
So funny. I too, was at the Barnes & Noble performance and definitely one of those "downtown Chicago gals" in thrall. I've seen him many times in concert, but that was special. He was in town and opening for Sting, who snuck into the room while Lyle played, quietly stood next to me and simply nodded along, appreciating the performance.
I was listening to some Lyle a couple of months ago, and posted that anyone who wondered why Julia married him needs to listen to "Large Band" and "Joshua Judges Ruth" and realize he was one sexy MF back then, especially on "Here I Am", and still is!
Some people are just pushing buttons, has to be. Either way, their input is a mouse fart in cyclone. It's not easy to notice a mouse fart. Imagine a mouse fart in a cyclone
Genius is an overused term when describing people these days, but not in this case. Lyle Lovett is a true musical genius, and a Texas national treasure. A kinder, more unassuming man will not be found.
A true and funny story about Lyle Lovett: He majored in journalism at Texas A&M but later revealed that he felt embarrassed asking questions during interviews. He’d ask his subject about something and then immediately think to himself, “That’s really none of my business.”
This is more like a poem than a song for me. I discovered it when I was shopping for a boat and someone had paired this song with a demostration video. I never have owned a pony, but I have a few goats and now a beutiful row boat for a small lake. It expresses how i feel aboult growing old and looking back to childhood. A wonderful feeling slipping between water and sky.
Lyle is one of the best concert artists you will ever see. Frank Sinatra loved this song according to daughter Nancy. We had the chance to visit with Lyle here in Spring, Tx. He is the real deal.
I tell people all the time that, if Lyle Lovett is playing within 100 miles of where you live, you won't regret the drive. I've seen him with the large band and with a group of about 7 musicians and never been anything but thrilled at the show. Fun and fantastic.
Saw him in Macon, ga recently in a badly attended show. He was fantastic! I got to move up to the 9th row because there were so many empty seats. A crying shame since he's one of the most talented and genuine artists out there.
I've seen Lyle in concert twice, one of which was with his Large Band. Of all of the top bands and artists that I have paid to see over the past 50 years Lyle Lovett is simply the best artist / performer of them all. Lyle speaks to the audience but it feels like he is speaking to you personally. He plays for the audience but it feels like he is playing for you alone.
My very large pony would ride in the back of the pickup truck. My uncle taught him so he wouldn't need to hook up a trailer to get somewhere quick. He was a sheriff in Texas in the early 60's. After he was retired as the sheriff's mount, he was given to me. Ol' Stewmeat was the best cowpony a young girl could ever have. He had the sweetest long lope. It was like sitting in a rocking chair when we galloped around the pastures.
I’ve seen Lyle 4-5 times & his wry witty humor, gentle style & musical intonation is truly special is so many ways. Extra entertaining performer & another Texas treasure.
One of my favorite songs from whenever . There's the beautiful irony and last laughs when Lyle sings about the Masked Man and Tonto . When I was a kid (I'm now almost 80) I used to faithfully watch the Lone Ranger ( the Masked Man ) on tv. He was always set up to be the big hero and Tonto ( foolish in Sanish - little did we know , but racism to the highest degree ) was the gofer , the Lone Ranger's errand boy . However, even as a kid , I used to be much more impressed with the character of Tonto ( actor Jay Silverheels ) because he dressed so cool , he was so athletic , he always got things done and was never out there looking for credit ( like the Big Orange Baboon ) . So, I get a special kick out of this song when Tonto tells his "boss" to kiss his ass , 'cause he's got a boat and headin' off to sea . Justice came late , but it was served . GL, Sr
"I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea." That's where you need to hear Mr. Lyle Lovett. Such a poet. Such a man. Such a patriot. (Yes. I said that.)
Perfection in song is rare, but when you hear it some of the mystery of life unravels. This is one of those songs by a man rivaled in songwriting only by the one that introduced him. Thank you for sharing
I've seen Lyle Lovett several times; each show has been terrific. But the first time was in Indianapolis, on the night he married Julia. He was on fire-it was an amazing concert and I kept wondering who the woman on stage was, singing in the background. The next day it was all over the news that they had married the day before. There was so much love and joy in his voice that night-even more than normal. See him in concert if you ever have the opportunity-he is a musical phenomenon.
I remember watching this concert on TV when it first came out, as I noticed that Lyle was going to be on and I was already a fan of his music. This concert also served to turn me on to the music of John Prine, so now these two are among my favorite singer songwriters.
this good fellow could take ANY song and make it a classic could he not? YES HE COULD and has....love this guy and all his stuff and his band as well...carry on Mr. Lovett, you got what it takes brother(one musician to another, however now at 75 YEARS OLD don't play any longer) that's ok, had my time and enjoyed every moment of it
For years i would play this at a summer camp for a wind down song at campfire. May great song writers continue to write great songs and influence those of us to share so the songs never die.
I saw Lyle at the beautiful historic Chicago Theatre back in maybe 1999. Such a great show, one of the very best I've seen. His band was just topnotch, and the great mandolin player Sam Bush played all night with his band!
@ImNotMad ButUR ... it was a play on words (showing my age) when I was a kid....there used to be a group of funny little jokes based on pseudo book titles and authors exmpl; "Rusty Bed Springs" written by I.P. Freely. your comment "knocked down to rusty metal and "bad" springs," reminded me of it. You didn't intend it but I massaged it anyway, we'll just chalk it up to being stir crazy.Hope your migraine goes away soon, it took mine 25yrs to move out. 😁 (once you have to explain humor , it loses the edge)
Talk about imagery. And, what a body of song writing that's come out of this guy. Saw him and his band of virtuosos at Caine Park some years ago and it was stellar.
Ahh, this is awesome! Just like I remember hearing it in 1982 at the Backstage in College Station or at the fountain out in front of Rudder Tower on Texas A&M campus (nobody but Lyle, with a tie clip mic clipped onto his guitar plugged into a little map powered by an outlet in the student bulletin board kiosk)
This is one of the first things I saw of Lyle. I am proud to say that I have this album signed by these two men. John signed it in tiny letters on the back. It was wonderful.
Isn't that cute. I was up in Pennsylvania when he was doing a tour with the double CD and I had him sign a picture of him holding the teddy bear within the insert. . So sweet.
My husband and I have been fortunate enough to see, hear, and speak to Lyle Lovett and John Prine on the Cayamo Music Cruise several times over the past 10 years. This song is one of our Cayamo cruise anthems!
I've dissected a bunch of Lyle's songs. There is no fat. Every word and note works perfectly. Just amazing fun to listen to...and analyze. And playing live, he and that 49 piece band are a killer. Thanks for this.
Saw Lyle last week in Missoula, Montana with Robert Earl Keen. Two great writers who happen to be awesome storytellers and entertainers in general..Amazing show.
Go to a Lyle Lovett and his Large Band concert -- they're as good and tight as it's possible for a concert to be. I first saw him when he opened for Bonnie Raitt, back when she used to do her winter solo acoustic tours, many years ago. My indie music friends were lucky to be in the DC area and got to listen to WHFS, a station dedicated to indie music, so we heard Lyle Lovett and countless others who were ignored by the "big" radio stations. When he married Julia Roberts we reacted differently than most people, "What does he want with that tootsie"???? Seriously, see him live. You'll never forget it.
I have to laugh I think I didn't sleep the night that I heard that he and Julia Roberts got married. It wasn't that she was a tootsie. It was just what did he have about him that would make her think he was the one for her? Not in a negative way. But in a funny way. But they are still friends after all these years. Most people are inherently good underneath. But sometimes you have to scratch the surface to find that part. Peace and blessings
John Prine & Lyle Lovett. Damn! Remember being blown away in the 70 hearing "Hello In There" & "The Great Compromise" for the first time. A lot like the first time I heard Lyle sing "Here I Am" and this song. I've seen Lyle 3 times - incredible.
Bamaboompa The first song I heard John Prime sung caught me forever. I could eventually strum and sing a couple of his songs. In a bar. Open mic. Late at night.
And here at the commencement of 2023 may each and every one of you out there reading this find your boat! Just be sure to give credit to the Tonto in your life. 😉
1989 seems like yesterday. I discovered Lyle Lovett the following year. Still one of my favorite artists, John Prine too. Check out Nanci Griffith , Iris Demint and Gillian Welch if you don't know them. Singer songwriters who speak to the heart.
I had the pleasuse of seeing Lyle at a small venue in Indianapolis a few years back , it was amazing, if you ever get the opportunity to see him live take it ,master musician , great story teller.
Lyle, I had a boat, now got a Jeep, Please at some point break out that Blues band of ur's. Any Idea how much this and many of your songs, make us think. Semper Fidelis !!!
I am 2300 miles from Texas, lots I miss about TX--back in the 70s/80s, certainly not today. Lyle and his Large Band come up here every so often...you should see the UT hats and banners come out at his concerts up here. I don't cause I ain't their alum.
Love this song. And here's two great songwriters, two of the best ever. Saw them with John Hyatt on Austin City Limits once. I only own my computer, my books & my car (& a few clothes). But I'd give my car in a heartbeat to have seen them all in concert! Thanks for sharing a great clip Brother. Peace!
This song was inspired by a child's drawing; the kid apparently couldn't choose between being a cowboy and being a sailor, he wanted it all. And even Tonto might want to chuck it all and reinvent himself at some point....
@BinaryReaper Awww. I hope I can change your mind. I read an interview with Lyle years ago where he was asked about the song and its inspiration. He said he wrote it from the perspective of that little kid who wants to try to have it all and thinks he can make it work. When he grows up he wants to be a cowboy and a sailor and a movie star and he tries to figure out how to make it work. I love it. Makes me think of how I thought of things as a kid.
I was there - if I remember correctly it was November 1988. a weekend of top American country music. Great weekend at the old Point Depot in Dublin - now redesigned and rebranded as 3Arena ( 3 is mobile phone company).
An amazing night in The Point Depot. It was my first year in Dublin. After the concert my friend and I headed back walking to city centre. So grateful to taxi driver who circled back a number of times to see if he should stop for us. Still remember the telling off he gave us.
Two of my favorite guys,Lyle and John Prine. How lucky am I at 65 to look back at a favorite pony and a favorite boat of my own.But I never rode my pony on my
Johns songwriting, was is and forever will be remembered, love that man. Lyle is like. The big band. Hell Julia Roberts married this amazing scarecrow looking dude. JP love u Lyle, Johnny boy.. miss u
Saw Lyle Lovett at an outdoor venue & my feet went green from so much dancing in the grass! I love his fluffy mohawk, I want to cuddle him like a puppy
I was on Cayamo one year , flew from GB to Miami them got on this wonderful boat filled with top drawer musicians including Lyle Lovett. We saw him play , truly amazing performance and a little later around 12 MN I went in to one of the many burger bars and he came in with his wife to be. I so wanted to speak to him but I left him alone and just savored the moment and then left them to their well earned food. It was 1 of those moments that I treasure to see a genius eating his burger ! Magic. X
Only thing I never liked about this song is when he throws off on Dale Evans! She was a beautiful lady young and old her and Roy were together for a long time.
john C was Right John P Be seeing you ALL soon, to those we leave behined , Stay Safe And help each other ! TO BAM Jp say he Like your work you Sing Ram Jam - Black Betty thats all HAVE A NICE LIFE Stay safe
Lyle had that Mormon chick thing working....the higher the hair, the closer to God! He's on my list of the 10 artists I have played the most in my home.
I'd kill to be on the boat with Lyle, John, and the pony! My mother cried when a country singer died. I thought she was crazy. I said "you didn't know that guy". Now I know how it feels.
Greatest might be a stretch. Even Mr Prine himself would tell you that. He's an awesome heartfealt singer songwriter and great at capturing little blips in an otherwise ordinary life. I'm pleased you think so much of him and I'm sure most people would welcome him as a friend. I've never met him but have considered him my friend for 35 or so years. If I ever got the chance, I'd probably just take him fishin..... and he'd probably write a song about it. LOL
@@gertfroebe3175 And now I've missed my chance. I made that comment seven years ago and you just don't think about the inevitable with people you love and admire. Your very right though, that really would have been cool.
