That's the whole movie. No matter how many times I watch it, it's still hilarious...and I can never figure out why. I think because it's so random and monotone.
It's the way nobody reacts. Most movies have a laugh track of sorts where you doing hear it but someone says something funny and the audiences is given time and permission to laugh. Maybe the camera will zoom in a certain way or other characters will make a face. Third movie nobody reacts. It's almost like the line was adlibbed and nobody noticed in post production.
The guy who played Kip said this guy didn’t know the camera was even rolling. This is just how this guy talks. The director liked it so much that he just kept it. It makes this scene so much better!
Lyle would talk and my brain refused to play along. I listened to this over and over trying to turn the sounds he made into words. Finally I remembered subtitles and made the universe right. God bless those arrowheads.
I found this hilarious because this is exactly what an old farmer like that would say. Knew a dozen just like him that have passed on. Brings a smile to my face.
Well you are right because I saw the director interviewed. He said this was just between takes and the old dude was just making small talk with the actors. He said he was a nice old guy but he really talked like this. Didn't even know they were rolling film.
Best part is the old man didn't know they were filming, he really talks like that and was telling a true story about how he found some Shoshone arrowheads
He is the most rural Idaho sounding man ever, and is my favorite reference to make when I talk about my experience living there when accents are brought up
My family and I love this scene and I still laugh at it every time I watch ND, mostly because we know alot of people like Lyle. Never knew what he was saying until I finally had it playing during the holidays last year and the subtitles were on.
To anyone who is from Utah or Idaho...I feel like of all the scenes and of all the characters this little sequence is the most accurate to the area. I found out I was the only person at my job who knew what this guy said, because I grew up around old folk that speak as clear as he does. Some less clear.
