Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne disease in the US; and climate change is helping it to spread even more. Animals such as deer, mice, squirrels, other critters in wooded area can be hosts to the bacteria, Borrelia burgdorferi, that causes Lyme disease in humans. When ticks feed off these hosts, the ticks become infected with it. And the bacteria can then be transmitted to humans via tick bites. There are numerous ways to prevent tick bites, but the best protection is vigilance. Whether you're going hiking, camping, or just a stroll in the woods, check for ticks that may have become attached. The sooner the tick is removed, the lesser your chances of being infected with Lyme disease.

Check out Julia Belluz's original article on how climate change is helping Lyme disease to invade America here: www.vox.com/science-and-health/2017/6/6/15728498/lyme-disease-symptoms-rash-ticks-global-warming
@BrorealeK
@BrorealeK 7 лет назад
Not really, Aaron. As is said in the video, cold winters are what primarily hinder the spread of ticks. As temperatures get warmer, ticks in the Northeast spread further inland. It's like the cases of death from icy roads primarily increasing in the South in cold winters: we take precautions here, we know that ticks can be anywhere out in nature, and the environment to breed and spread out is already here. The steady increase in cases in the Northeast must have a cause, and if ticks are that sensitive to their environment... well, that makes sense. Northern summers are more encouraging to outdoor recreation, ticks spread further inland, and the local population isn't typically concerned with ticks and Lyme disease. I don't know the science, but logically this holds up.

VERY IMPORTANT: the standard tests for Lyme recommended by the CDC are highly inaccurate. They were never meant to diagnose but that's what they're being used for now. The bullseye rash is also not always present. Save the tick and get it tested if you find one. I'm fighting Lyme disease right now. Please, please do everything you can to avoid this disease. Some people never recover, and in my case it's taking years to clear the infection.

Nick C so am I, i was bitten a long time ago when I was a young child and never got the rash, i only found out 2 years ago. The disease can be cured but going through it is horrific and the research on it is very poor. I'm Irish and had to have bloods sent to Germany to get a reliable diagnosis

My cousin got lyme but he recovered quite fast. He had a lot of exhaustion and joint pain. He actually was diagnosed with the disease but was told it 6 months later because the doctor thought it was a mistake that he was positive for Lyme. That doctor was not aware of the rising threat.

My brother got rocky Mountain spotted tick fever and almost died when he was younger because they couldn't diagnose until it was almost too late. If a tick bites you SAVE IT FOR A FEW WEEKS in a plastic bag until you're in the clear then throw it away. If we would've saved that tick it would have been easily diagnosed and treatment would have been a lot more speedy.

I didn't like the fact that this turned into a PSA toward the end. I'd love to see more information about lyme disease rather than prevention "tips" that I can easily find elsewhere. I know someone who didn't realize they had Lyme disease and ended up with a chronic condition, but their insurance company won't cover treatment since they don't recognize that Lyme disease can be a chronic condition. Would also be nice if you'd disspell myths about how ticks find you, e.g. they don't fall from trees.

I got Lyme disease in early spring of 2010, when I was 13. It was awful. I didn't get diagnosed until the end of August. I suffered through extreme fatigue for months, missing the last few months of my 7th grade year. I just slept constantly. And when I was awake I got such bad migraines. I had the bullseye rashes all over my body but didn't get out of bed enough for anyone to notice. I lost almost all memory from that year and a little bit before. I also have some memory issues that my doctor thinks is related to that. And I get bouts of chronic fatigue syndrome despite being successfully treated. Lyme disease is a real issue, an there are many other people that got a worse deal than me.

Something very important about removing ticks that is not mentioned in the video: pull it from the head closely to the skin, DO NOT PULL THE BODY. Doing so can decapitate the tick, increasing chances of infection and leaving the head to form a nasty abscess. If the tick is deeply dug in, coat it with Vaseline or tape to suffocate it and it will come off easier. Thank you for making this video! This is great info!

Just a note, deer ticks do not normally cross over to humans. They are completely different, they are common on coyotes and dogs as well. Also removing ticks with tweezers is not such a good idea, they carry their eggs in the head area. Heat up a needle or pin with a match or a lighter and touch the point to the head of the tick and it will release. Pulling on a tick with tweezers can leave the head with the eggs burrowed in the skin and make you an easier candidate for Lyme disease. I grew up getting wood ticks and was in the infantry as well, so I have quite a few wood ticks in my life. They are wretched things.

Speaking as someone who had Lyme disease three times as well as other tick related illnesses (Ehrlichiosis), the best defense I have found is bug repellent, avoiding small trails and walking instead on wide trails where brush cannot touch you, take off clothes after you walk in the woods and either place them in the dryer for 20 minutes or place them in the washer (don't wear them again without doing this... the ticks will wait for you on the clothes). Shower soon after the walk. Also, buy chickens for eating the buggers roaming your lawn. Don't let dogs sleep with you. Some locations have laboratories that will test a tick you pull off. Even if you don't have the traditional "bullet" rash but you have flu-like symptoms, see a doctor. Ehrlichiosis can be a killer and presents differently than Lyme. Even symptoms like short-term memory loss, ache joints, or rashes in odd areas (like the back of the neck), see a doctor especially if you have been to the Northeast. Most symptoms take a week or more to show. And...why won't they create a vaccine for this disease?!

@Cimlite
@Cimlite 7 лет назад
Rafael Rodriguez The legs aren't anything you have to be worries about, it's the head that can get stuck inside. The reason why you want to use tweezers is because if you disturb the tick too much it can panic, which results in it vomiting up things you don't want. So a quick firm pull around the head part of the tick with tweezers is the way to go.

Build houses out of things which don't burn and stop putting out wildfires. Wildfires kill all three stages of a ticks life. They also dry out the understory of a forest, making it inhospitable to ticks. In *some cases* , more frequent wildfires are also less severe because they burn up leaves and downed wood thus removing fuel.

Nasty disease from which I swear I still suffer the consequences even twenty-two years later.

I have been an avid outdoorsman since childhood. I survived uncountable tick bites without infection until age forty-five when I was diagnosed with Lyme after displaying a bullseye rash. So explain to me how it is a matter of climate change and not the fact that my neighbor brought a bunch of exotic deer onto his hunting preserve. I only developed Lyme disease after we started seeing an unfamiliar, very tiny (almost undetectable) tick in our woods. Everyone is too quick to scream climate change. Being outdoors so often I would have noticed a change in the weather but instead I noticed this new tick which gave me Lyme. If it was already too late I would suggest that we stop the import of exotic species. Yep, we are screwed. Please be diligent, Lyme is absolutely miserable.

My mom has chronic Lyme disease and she's had it for 20 years. She has gone to many doctors and most of them have misdiagnosed her with 15 different illnesses. She went to a Lyme specialist and he said that all of the symptoms from the diseases she was diagnosed are all symptoms of lyme.

the tick increase is glaringly obvious even without specific stats. Just from last year my dog got 1 tick from the annual camping trip, this year he got 5. Same campsite, same tick meds, same time.

I have lived in MD my whole 30 plus years. I have NEVER seen ticks as bad as they have been the past 2 years, but this summer especially. I treated my whole yard with tick killer in the spring yet I have almost always come in the house with at least one tick crawling on me or my daughters after playing outside. I've only had 1 attached but have killed over twenty this summer. It's becoming an epidemic. My brother caught Lyme's in his childhood and I know countless others that have it as well. If you spend any amount of time outside in Maryland you are almost certainly at risk for this disease. Oh and I use deet spray but while it helps with mosquitos it does little to fend off ticks

That's not how you're supposed to remove ticks though. Doing it that way can leave you with the tick's head still inside. Instead you should twist the tick without pulling, it'll come out that way, easily, and with no risk of the head staying in.
@blinski1

I was thought that way of removing ticks for years, but now they say that's twisting what usually makes the tick lose its head (literally).

Wait... I thought you shouldn't pull tics off skin. Their fangs have the possibility of latching into your skin, which makes the disease easier to spread, plus they're damn near impossible to remove

Lyme disease is actually very commonly mistaken for CFS as it's extremely hard to diagnose without rigorous testing. I don't think that Lyme disease is spreading so much as it is being recognized more frequently.

If you remove a tick by pulling with tweezers like they show on the video, the head will stay attached and it can get infected. Don't pull: twist counter-clockwise with the tweezers or a tick-removing tool (it looks like a tiny crowbar) and it'll detach by itself. This doesn't kill the tick though, but you can burn it in a tissue afterwards if you so wish.

Always be very careful when pulling a tick off with tweezers. Grab it by the head (as close to the skin as possible), and rotate it around the bite so that it lets go by itself. If you grab it too high, it might latch on tighter to your skin, in which case the body will detach from the head which will stay in place and regrow a body and you might increase the risk of infection. If you pull too hard on the head, it might regurgitate bacteria under the skin, therefore proceed with calm and patience. I use to play a lot in a very wild backyard as a kid and got ticks all the time (up to a dozen at a time). I never got sick nor feverish, but then again I was lucky to have my mother do a full check up every time I came back inside the house. So as long as you stay careful and attentive, nothing bad should happen to you :)

I'm from NJ and in the last year my sister, mom, aunt and boyfriend's mom has suffered from Lyme. My sister has gone through weeks on and off (maybe even months at this point) of antibiotics, and they still can't get rid of it. She is a long distance runner going into her senior year of high school, and the disease has affected everything from her performance in running to her SAT scores. We really need to solve this problem :\

While deet on your skin is an effective form of tick resistance, it is also a potent neurotoxin, so I personally try to avoid it unless I'm going into the Amazon or something. Permethrin is actually more effective at killing ticks on contact, and the best part is that you can treat your clothes with it and it stays on through several washes. Don't put it on your skin though! Also, if you have cats be extremely careful with permethrin before it dries as it is highly toxic to cats and there are many reported cases of neurological damage or even death from accidental exposure.
