10/20/87 10 yr. Anniversary of Plane Crash Artimus Pyle introduces the band & crew Billy Powell Allen Collins Gary Rossington Ed King Randall Hall Leon Wilkeson Johnny Van Zant & others ~Allen Collins speaks about the band & the tour~
Todd I couldn’t agree with you more! I love the whole band, Ronnie inspired me to sing as I do! Gary inspired to play guitar as I do! But Allen inspired me and still does to play better then I do! With out Skynyrd I wouldn’t be a Musician now. God bless the LYNYRD SKYNYRD band
So hard to see Allen in the chair. He would tear it up on stage. Sad to realize that they are all gone except for Gary and Artimus. We are lucky to have experienced the greatest Southern Rock band during our lifetime ♥️ God bless those we have lost 🙏
Agreed. My heart hurts for what was once purchased perfection. Decades later yet no band has truly risen to this level of quality and talent. I feel old!
When God one day when I walk through the perfect Gates and he asked me what song is it you want to hear I'm not thinking out loud rebirth freebird Free Bird forever eternally he's with this song's going eternity of for every man woman so out there free bird self-set you free and walk without pain in the Gates of heaven one day I got that to look forward to and I'll tell the good Lord free bird is what I want to hear
The opening notes by Billy on piano and then the slide by Gary, the greatest intro of a song there ever was, imho. Now all the Skynyrd boys are upstairs, playing together again, what a scene that must be. Their incredible music will live on, forever.
In 1987 I was working as a bouncer at a bar called Finkys in Daytona Beach ( now called Baja club I believe ) Ronny Van Zant was there's doing a meet and greet , I got the chance to talk to him and I told him about a friend of mine who was hit by a car when I was a freshman in high school seven years prior, she was in a coma for an extended period of time and her family would play her favorite song " FREEBIRD" over and over again until she woke from her coma At the end of the night he walked over to me and handed me a rolled up sheet of paper and told me to make sure my friend gets it. He had written her name at the top followed by the lyrics to freebird and signed it " from one survivor to another, Ronnie Van Zant "
Sorry about that , I had "Ronnie" on my mind after watching the video , you have a good eye, even after reading it a couple times before hitting send I still didn't catch it . His brother "Johnny" is who I met at Finkys and who wrote the lyrics for my friend , I apologise, I would never write a false story especially when it involves somebodys death .
How did you attend a meet and greet in 1987 in Daytona beach with Ronnie van zant he was deceased in 1977 not sure I'm almost positive that Elvis is not in Graceland as I am that Ronnie van want was not in Daytona beach in 1987?
I agree 💯 I'm a recovering alcoholic and drug addict and this is really the first time I have heard this song sober? IT WAS AWESOME TRIBUTE TO THOSE WHO PASSED AWAY!! I LOVED IT!!🥰🥰💯💘🙌
Struggling addict here as well, my parents were at that show in Oakland. I still live in the Bay Area. God bless all of those who perished in that crash. Thank you for music that will continue through the generations.
@andystransportchannel7784 On par equal to Allen? That's hilarious! For starters there isn't a person alive that is equal to Allen Collins when it comes to the solo on Freebird. To date Ed is probably the closest I've ever heard to playing it very close to Allen. Ricky isn't even half the guitar player that Ed King was & to say that Ricky went out of his way to play a similar guitar as Allen makes me scratch my head. It's the exact same model Allen used. Another thing is Ricky went on record to say he never wanted to play it exactly like Allen & truth be known it's because he couldn't anyways
Steve Gaines was the best guitarist to grace Skynyrd in my opinion. His lead and rhythm guitar playing, his songwriting skills, and his vocal skills lifted that band up and put them into a totally different stratosphere. Rest in Peace to everyone in the band. Only Artimus Pyle and Leslie Hawkins remain. So 😥 sad
Steve definitely had the voice and guitar skills! He made Allen and Gary step up their playing skills. I can’t imagine how successful he would have been if he had lived. All over a dam plane running out of gas. 🤦♂️
@@richardfrancis8476Nobody made Gary Rossington step up his game. Gary Rossington pushed himself to the max all on his own and as far as I 'm concerned he was the best and he was the sound of Skynyrd. Gary and Ronnie are Lynyrd Skynyrd. If you heard Ronnie or Gary you knew you were hearing Lynyrd Skynyrd. Gary could make his guitar talk and sing and nobody could play it pretty like Gary Rossington did. RIP GARY ROSSINGTON 🎸🦅❤️🇺🇲
Ed King did an amazing job on the solo and sadly, now he is gone too. The quality of music this band in all it's forms made in the short 5 years they recorded together, will never be equaled.
I've often pondered what could of been....after Street Survivors.... that was such a great album. In 5 short years hit after hit they made their own path.... thanks.... All's I can do is write about it
I've been a fan of Lynyrd Skynyrd since I was 14. They inspired me to learn to play guitar, their music has influenced my life. Hell, I've got the opening lyrics to this song tattooed on my right arm (if I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me). And I can honestly say that the music of this band has helped me become the person that I am today. And I'm proud of that.
Its 2020 august and Mr. ZANT...brought a single tear to this old man's eye...we are not just survivors,,,we came here to thrive or die...no other way left to live...peace good people...remember you don't have to be an evil fuk in this life to be something truly great...amen
🎼Well said, brought tears to my eyes✌ I was born in 67' & I love Ronnie. His voice, his smile, his hair, his Style & his hats. Lynard Skynard will never be the same again without Ron & Allen. May his music live on 4ever & May they 🎶"RIP"🙏✌😷bsafe& God Bless
I'm in complete & utter tears 😭😭😭 right now watching this wonderful tribute to those beautiful individuals whom we lost that terribly tragic day. RIP 🙏🙏🙏🙏 Ronnie Van Zant Steve Gaines Cassie Gaines Dean Kilpatrick 🕯🕯🕯🕯 Fly high Freebirds 🕊🕊🕊🕊
@@ixlr8677 I saw them at the Cow Barn at Miss. State in '76 (I think, I'm old, lol). I was at Ole Miss and several of us drove from Oxford to Starkville for the show. I'm so glad we did!
It's so sad to see Allen Collins REACHING UP TOO people to talk to them but when it used to be them looking up at him, he was a tall man to then being in a wheelchair is just one of the saddest things I've seen😢😢
A lot of sad history with past, present Lynyrd Skynyrd, 2018 Johnnys daughter, Lindsay, RIP... Ed King... GOD BLESS THEM ALL...they still are AWESOME.. AMAZING... music for the soul...
@@wigglebutts173; honestly ever since the crash it's gone down hill for the band unfortunately, but no matter what tragedy they still somehow managed to stay together and do what they do best
@@oneofthefew1777 Johnny was never about replacing his brother, he's said numerous times i can't fill Ronnys shoes, Gary, Rickey, others all said Ronny never wore shoes... Johnny, kept the music going...with help... generations were given the opportunity to hear the music, yes for some it's not the same, because it isnt the same, ..for others they love it ... Johnnys been doing this longer than his brother was alive... to keep music alive.💔❤🇺🇸🍺🍻
@@wigglebutts173 agreed, I personally stick with the pre crash Skynyrd rather than the new, in my opinion the songs are better bc Ronnie is the backbone in creating them
Actually Ed used to play the solo live with Allen a lot. In my opinion Ed and Steve were the two best guitarist's they had, and in the video here some of the shots of hands were Randall Hall
Just remember what a life Allen Collins lived. I can see him standing on the tip of Jagger's tongue shaped stage and blowing the Stones off the stage at Knebworth and Oakland Coliseum rocking the place to the ground that summer day. He will live forever and Freebird will be played a hundred years from now.
💯%. He was unmissable onstage and regardless of the tragedies that befell him, and the troubles he suffered and as a result also caused, he remains one of the most central figures in the life & times of LS. His talent burns on.
The 79 Volunteer Jam was the first reunion and first version of Freebird w/o vocals. I almost went to see Skynyrd in 77' just before the crash but Mom said I was too young to go to a concert, wait till next time... Thanks mom! :S
God bless Lynyrd Skynyrd and Ronnie Vanzandt ... I was there in 1987 at the oak mt amphitheater... btw Ronnie would say Boo boo boo to trump, just like he did to George Wallace.... Freedom baby, fuck the Rich bureaucrats ....
Gary’s slide and Billy piano in the first half are what’s beautiful about the song. I never tire of it but have heard enough of the later half of the song and extended solo- it’s just got old after hearing it for 50 years. The first half of the song is too beautiful to get old at least for me
I played a Gibson Firebird at a shop today, played some of these licks. I told the sales guy I got to see Allen Collins play live, I dont think he knew who I was talking about. Cool to see Ed play this again. RIP
I only recognized Artimus by his voice... he didn’t look the same without his beard, and Billy gained a ton of weight by 87’. I wish Ed King never left the group. he wrote so many great songs for the band. Growing old really sucks... only three on that stage are left! I would like to meet Ed one day.
ALLEN COLLINS PLAYED THE LEAD GUITAR ON THIS ORIGINALY, NO ONE COULD PLAY LIKE ALLEN, BUT ED KING HERE DOES A FANTASTIC JOB ON IT, HE WAS NOT THE ORIGINAL LEAD PLAYER ON THIS SONG, HE KICKS ASS ON THIS , R.I.P. TO ALL THE FREEBIRDS, COUSIN FIGEL
That shit was so rude that Artimus waited till the end to introduce Allen Collins and he really didn't introduce him. Allen Collins has always been underrated. He was a great guitarist and songwriter.
ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2HXivdPva2s.html Watch Allen Collins opening on this song. I cry every time I see it. Not to mention the song has a “ good message to it “. They all had Mother’s. “ better hear what I say “. God Bless you Allen Collins. 🙏😔
Allen wasn’t the same after the crash that left him paralyzed and in constant pain. He always left the spotlight as soon as he was introduced. He was always introduced at the shows because it was a condition of his sentence to use his fame and accident as a warning and deterrent to others about drinking and driving. Introducing him last was a way to keep him up front a little longer, and not have it look like one of the founding members of the band was showing up the crew be leaving as soon as he said his part. I mean, could you imagine how the crew would’ve felt if he was first, threw up the deuces, and rolled off while you were being recognized as being essential to pulling off the tour successfully?
@@ZacCostilla Collins was paralysed in a different crash - he flew his car into a field, when the emergency call went through and politely asked which field he was in, he answered ‘Drumming, but wtf has that got to do with anything? Oh, and there’s a 1m fountain spring soaking my hair, kind of dark red and intermittently spurting skywards from here in my left ar.....margh for fuck’s bastards ache, Ok, I’ll leave it there for now, I need a short nap, Happy Easter, thanks for calling. Geezus, where’s the bloody misuss gone - what a dicriculously shit time to fuck off in the middle of bloody nowhere leaving me drowning in muddy spring waaaaaat the fuck. ZZzzzzzzzz Edit: I apologise, it’s just a thing that happens to you as you barrel into the arse end of your fifties in England, you suddenly become a pretentious arsehole because you suddenly realise that your entire life’s work spent researching, taking lectures, giving lectures, and being patronisingly referred to as ‘an expert in your field’ amounts to knowing less than 0.1% of all there is to know, with respect to your chosen field; it’s like a kick in the plums with a JCB backhoe - so when you say ‘....the crash..’ with respect to Lynyrd, I automatically assume you meant ‘THE’ crash, when that may not actually be the case. Right, anyone for COVID Bingo? *Hic*, I’ll deal. I’ll get my coat....
Blackberry brandy in the parking lot and inside at the Tacoma concert. Was in disbelief before and then just sang my ass off alll night. Great music, perfect music.
i've been an acdc fan all my life and i've known about skynyrd but was only devoteted to acdc but having watched a lot of videos lately,i have to say i have been mesmerised by Ronnie's stage presence .rip bud
I cried my eyes out when I saw Allen in that condition. He was so underrated as a guitarist. I hope he is flying high above us all now with Ronnie, Steve, Cassie, and Billy.
I'm 34 year's old young and wish everyday this band wasn't abruptly ended by tragedy. I understand his brother and the band went on, but Ronnie, Stevie and Cassie going to heaven it wasn't ever the same. Imagine what they could have done!.
Man watching this video... especially the part where Ronnie's hat was on the microphone during free bird. I ain't cried that many tears in several years.
I saw them before the plane crash! I was in High School, then. They were my favorite band & still are. I also have their album with the flames on it. I bought it after the concert. I love you, forever!😊👯✌
Gotta give them props tho they got the allen tone and he killed the solo and it was an amazing performance especially their little added part towards the end of the solo but no one will ever play it like allen did because that man is a legend and will always be. R.I.P allen
You know everbody gives props to Ronnie of course and Steve, and Gary, and my personal favorite AC, but hear little in the way of recognition for Billy. Man oh man was dude talented. Made love to those keys. Alot of the backbone of some of their most played stuff is with Billy pounding that ivory. Whatever it was made of then, ivory I think.
It was Ivory and your right he was so good filled in so many spots and added texture to the music free bird will give you chills in the intro Billy was the greatest piano player ever
No they didn't, the manager for Aerosmith saw the pilots were substandard, so they wisely didn't charter that plane. LS could've done the same, but unfortunately didn't.
He was an extremely talented musician but he let drugs and alcohol destroy himself and kill an innocent passenger in his car. He learned no lessons from all the tragedies that befell him. He continued a wreckless life style and self destructed. Enjoy his talent and muscianship but don't worship him.
@@mrsgstd Go through what he went through & see how you deal with it. He lost his best friend in that damned crash & then lost his wife Kathy when she bled out after suffering a miscarriage. Add the FACT that so many of their "friends" kept him "juiced up" on pills to offset the pain from his injuries & you have a potent mixture with eventually led to his death in 1990
Saw the original Lynard Skynard in the early to mid 70's! In those days there were 3 bands for a concert! Skynard was the 3rd Band that night & they rocked Kiel Auditorium in STL till the wee hours of the morning!!! Encore after encore that night!!! WOW what a memory!!! :D
The Tribute Tour was my 1st Concert--1987. I'm 50 today and I've never saw this performance. After A FEW BUDWEISERS This hit's THE SPOT!!!!! To the new people who don't know who Lynyrd Skynyrd is, THEY WERE THE GREATEST. Ronnie, Gary AND Allen Wrote these song's FROM THE HEART!!!! Song's to Live By. Tradition"s to Carry On. R.I.P. FREEBIRD's
Growing up in the 70' ( at this time I was 12 years old ) It was intriguing to find remibilaia in the draws. My brother introduced me to these songs. He was only a year older than me.
The so called Greats .....Jimmy Page, Hendrix, Eddie, etc etc etc etc etc etc ..... all guitar heroes i their own way,to so may people ....... I look up to some of them, but Allen was a force to be reckoned with on guitar as well & very underrated.
I was born in 2000, but when i knew that the accident occured in my birth day (Oct 20th), i was listening to Free Bird, and i literally shed tears when i found out.
Man this bad has always kicked ass wit every song they sing my brother GENE passed away an he got me into listening to L.S. years ago lov yas all !! I wish I could see yas in concert again I saw u once years ago !! It would b a dream come true for me to go to a show !! I'm from DE !! 👍🍻😁❣
Went and saw this band on October 4, 1987 in Pittsburgh. As a long time fan who never got to see the original band...........it was magical when those guys took the stage that night for me.
One of the most memorable moments I ever had was to see the Rossington Collins band on their much abbreviated first tour. They did the songs from their first album and then they shined the spotlight on the microphone with Ronnies' hat on top and played Freebird just like here. It was so spooky and the place was so quiet you could here a pin drop.
I was at the Dallas show November 1st 1987. I remember the shock and sadness we all felt when we heard about the plane crash. I had not had a chance to see them prior, and am glad I saw this tribute/reunion.
I was at Tuesday night oncore show Lakeland civic Center they crashed the next day, my first concert and really there last..rip all that are now gone, I will be joining you soon..
I just get so God dam mad when I think about it to much, here you have a brilliant energetic guitar player in a wheelchair a bunch of beating broken hearts,u can just feal the pain ,I know I've lost most of friends tragically u go on yet there is that pain that never goes away no counseling ,not enough booze or pills or time will take it away..u just here the absence in the live shows, he's playing with a broken heart and bones. all of the surviveing have a hole in there soul I when I think about it to much I get very angry..rip to all who lost their lives and prey that the one's effected by this has some kind of peace..
The Lynyrd Skynyrd Band played with heart. In today's world it's all about the money. Greed full throttle. You see it in professional sports , music and movies. They were great. God Bless them🕯🙏🕯
@@mattsowder7978 I'll agree with that, but alot of people seem to like the tribute band, but who am I to judge. The revived Skinner can come no where near the original. It should've died when Van Zant did. This memorial tribute to Van Zant and the other band members was good though.
