Same here.62. Saw them in 75 and 76. Go see them on Sturgis! I know it's not exactly the same band, but the tribute goes on. Saw them last year at Sturgis and it was amazing! Going again this year. 50 th anniversary.
This song and Tuesdays gone were played at my best friends funeral in N Anaconda Montana in a Baptist Church the pastor knew all of us and let us have the service without him being there his only request was that we not drink or smoke in his church He had been at one time a cocaine cowboy and we respected his simple request
Dude I’m 20 and am super young and know nothing but when I need a natural high I throw the live version of freebird and jam for 7 minutes of bad ass guitar solo
And there you saw it, folks. One of the best American blues rock guitarists, ever. Yeah, I know Hendrix was unmatched, Allman was terrific, Bloomfield was great, et al. But Allen Collins was a stripped down, meat and potatoes, precisely delivered, pentatonic blues guitar player; and a lot of these riffs are like Paul Kossoff's, only sped up and supercharged with a little bit of Southern twang tossed in here and there. On the record, he did the dual leads all himself. That's how good he was. Amazing. Sad that he's gone. Sad that most of them on that stage are gone. What a tight, rockin', soulful and bluesy sounding band. With such a full sound. With Ronnie singing his heart out -- just like on the record. The UK music fans obviously had a treat that day. Peace out to all.
It’s certainly up there. Three of my all time favorite performances are people upstaging the Stones. There’s this, then there’s The Who playing A Quick One at the Rolling Stone’s Rock and Roll Circus and then there’s James Brown just blowing them to pieces at the T.A.M.I. Show.
Yes, certainly "TOP TEN" and without a daught before there time... RIp my brother's.. PS Ronnie Van zant what an talented individual true Master conductor creator and leader of something great. 🍄🎶🌜🌎🌛🎶🍄
I was 16 years old that Summer. Would someone please build a time machine so I get the hell out this crazy world we have now. I so miss the vibe of this time period.
Wasn't born until '88 but yes! If I had a single opportunity to travel through time, it would be to see this show. Everything has gone off the rails now. I want off this ride!
65 here, saw them many times in ‘70s Jax, Fla. their hometown. Well, closest to Green Cove Springs. I was in Orange Park, just across the river from those bolts. The ‘70s were wild. Kids today could not even imagine!
Best version of this song. Thank you Ronnie, Alan, Billy, Gary and everyone else. From the bottom of my heart, I can't thank you enough for what you gave to the world
when i read the underated comments i usually think, no they're not. however in this case i agree..allen collins is one of the greatest guitarists without a doubt in my book..
I still love Stairway, Comfortably Numb and of course Stranglehold, but this will always be one of my favorites. I was so blessed to see the original members of the band in concert. I used to go to almost every concert that came in concert, and I got to see the original members. I still listen to that amazing music today that I grew up listening to. They left us way to soon, but we still have all of the original music to listen to and cherish today. If I leave here tomorrow, will you still remember me, Yes, we all do remember you, miss you.
"If I leave here tomorrow, would you still remember me? " The almost cosmic irony of that question gets me. Lynyrd Skynyrd will be remembered as long as we have music. A magnificent song by a magnificent band.
Guy I had been seeing for a year died suddenly. I got in my car and my normal radio station was off the air for some reason, so I changed it. The very first thing I heard was that line. No intro, nothing. Just that. Made me smile.
Freebird at Knebworth 1976 is as good as it gets. There has never been, nor ever will be, a better performance. In particular, nobody will ever come close to Allen Collins' performace on that day. It's disappointing that nobody has come close to emulating that performance in 45 years, but also somehow immensely satisfying to know that there is a benchmark for live musicianship and here it is, recorded for all eternity. How I envy the people that were there. They were part of something that can never be repeated.
It blows my mind every time I watch it , which is almost every day . But listen to Jimi play "machine gun " live on new years eve , he's from another planet.
Back when Americans (even 20 year olds) appreciated freedom....back to the music, that guitar solo is so far off the charts, the sound is still traveling the universe.
Hahaha your generation let the douchebags become supreme. There ain’t no freedom anymore. Especially with the 60 and 85 year olds in power. Freedom isn’t America lol muuuurica
This song could go on continuously for 20 years and it still would be my favorite song ever!!!! I love it when it ramps up!! Take me back to the 70's please!!!!!
I was a teenager in the 70's. Teenager's today are so different. I feel sorry for them. Life was so much simpler. We weren't a plastic society, no cell phones, no computers, etc. The best part was that concert tickets were less than 10 dollars and others in the audience were respectful of each other. There was trust amongst us. I wouldn't have missed it for the world.
Great comments, man.i agree hole heartedly. Rock on man. I'm 62 year old woman and still love it. My kids and grandchildren know it too. I got my grandchildren into. They are 8 and 11. My son hates it. Who cares? I don't. ❤❤❤❤
Here it is 2023 and now all the original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd are gone. They might be gone but never will they be forgotten. So fly high on that Eagle in the sky. I would like to thank you all for this tremendous music that you left us with. Until the road ends and my time on earth is done I'll see you all again one day. Long Live Lynyrd Skynyrd.
@@gopherdudette Agree but... do you mean the One More For the Road version (one night of the two at the Fox Theater) or the Gold & Platinum version (which is from the other night)? Imvho the G&P version is *the* version. It's transcendental whichever one you listen to ofc but G&P is the one I ALWAYS go back to Still got the original vinyl & it's simply euphoric/spinetingling/other worldly & a band at their tightest & sheer brilliant best.
@@gopherdudette I can't and won't disagree with someone's fav & as I said 99.9% of the live performances of it are incredible but I grew up on the G&P version, not even knowing about One More For the Road or there being alternate takes from back to back shows at the same venue, so it's just ingrained in my soul and holds memories from beach-fishing with my dad as it blasts out of a boombox to road trips with my mates, funerals of people I've known & getting stoned at house parties with it blaring. life wouldn't be the same without it, ANY version. we're just lucky it exists for us to savour forever. 🤘
Yeah me too. Ronnie was really nervous about singing in front of all of those people so I told him to just close his eyes and imagine they weren't even there. After the show we had a big laugh about how well it worked.
OMG - to have been there - sun setting over those trees - that guy absolutely shredding the solo. Can’t tell you how many times I have gone back to watch this . LOVE IT
@@chrisscanlon3717 No it isn't. It's focused on the crowd, not the band. Plus Allen's solo is longer & more intense. Knebworth 76 was used for the special edition just released as one of the best performances ever recorded. Had u seen this band live before the crash u would know this is what u experienced when u attended their concerts.
@@chrisscanlon3717 I said, had u seen this band pre crash LIVE u would know the difference. We saw them many times LIVE before the crash as they came through our area often here in the South. Im old enough prob to be your grandma & all we did back then was go to concerts. We went to see the bands, not the 'babes' as u say, u immature little punk.
Gaines was keeping up but Collins was absolutely smashing it. He fed off of that great Knebworth crowd, they are some true rockers who appreciated good Southern rock when the tempo started crescendoing into a rip your shirtsleeves off it was so loud.
It's July 1979. My niece was driving on US 17 South when she hit another car head on. She died instantly. This was the last thing she heard. She loved Lynard Skinner. We played it at her funeral. Somewhere she's still riding along playing this song. She 27. Play on.
If the Brits in the crowd didnt know this song, by God they now it now. Paul McCartney and David Gilmore were back stage with Jack Nicholson. I heard when this song started their conversation stopped and they walked over to behind the stage.
The 'Brits' of which I am one certainly knew this song before this performance thank you very much! I was there that day during one of the hottest summers England had ever known. LS were a brilliant band! 😊😎🎸🇬🇧🇺🇦
It's 2021, and I wish we could go back to the 70's and 80's. Such happier times before cell phones and internet and all the assorted garbage that currently exists.
Most of the crowd were seated but the end and they were all standing! Nothing will match it nothing will come close to it! Legendary beyond comprehension!
Gives me goosebumps! That is a lesson in dynamics from the opening piano ,to the southern crooning of Van Zant, to the over the top all out kick ass end.I love that Ronnie marched his boys out to the tip of the Rolling Stones tongue, even though they were told not to do that as the opening act.Van Zant commanded a stage with just his presence.
Four of us Bought tickets for this it all depended on me passing my driving test to get there, thankfully their trust in me came through, sadly one of the four passed away recently to covid. If memory serves me right 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd were not the opening act they were preceded by Tod Rundgren, Hot Tuna and one other band that I can't remember the name of.
And this is why these cell phones are such a great invention. Those of us that never got to see theses live performances we can now. Long live Lynyrd Skynyrd and the greatest Era of rock and roll ever!!
What CAN'T be Debated ... Now or 100 years from now... Who the Top 2 Southern Rock Bands of All Time Are ... ( ZZ Top, being a Blues Based, Texas Rock Band ) 🎸🎸
@@raymondfoerster6711 no Queen's live aid is nothing compared to the Free bird live or the rolling stones concerts. the concerts of the 60's / 70's are really of better quality in terms of music.
I love how the crowd was mostly just dead or exhausted when the song first started but you could slowly see them rise and by the end they were standing, dancing and applauding.
Watching Ronnie get everybody back on track to end the song is amazing! He wasn’t just a kick ass song writer and front man he was an amazing conductor!
Love how Ronnie brought all his mules out on the Tongue of the stage, knowing they were told by the Stones manager to Not go out on the Tongue! CLASSIC SKYNYRD!! Miss them boys!!!!!°
Ronnie was the type of guy that after a few drinks, he might be your best friend and ask you if you think you can make it to the door before he takes you out. And the buzzard would take on 4 guys in a bar fight and go up and wake band members up to help him fight. I doubt that any of the band members had their original teeth, and I'm being serious. So being told not to go out on the Rolling Stones tongue was just like someone challenging him to a fight.....he NEVER turned down an offer like that.
I turn 60 this year and I've always loved this band especially Freebird and They Call me the Breeze. What talented musicians they were from a generation of great bands and songwriters. I feel fortunate that I grew up to enjoy it all. Rest in Peace and thanks for the memories. You will always be remembered.
@@oldschool4382 I know of only one live recording of Simple Man & Allen didn't do the solo for that song that was all Gary Rossington. Until someone comes forward with some bootleg material I can safely say I've listened to just about everything they've done
Couldn't agree more. It simply has never been, and never will get, better than the 3 guitar jam at the end. I bet I've watched this over 100 times and still love it like it is the first time. EPIC.
I was there on that very hot sunny day,Skynyrd were amazing, blew the Rolling Stones of the stage.I went to see Bob Seger on my 18th birthday at the Hammersmith odeon,on the night of the plane crash,a two minute silence was held for them,I’m not embarrassed to say, that I had tears in my eyes.

The best part is 12:06 where you can see Ronnie grab Allen and get the band back in time. Really shows how much fun Allen and everyone was having and how much of a leader Ronnie was.
I saw this too and was also impressed, but I think he's motioning that its time to end. 'One more bar' maybe? (OBLIGATORY PEDANTIC EDIT: It actually sounds like 4 or 8 bars to me, but you get the idea. One more 'go around'. I guess its one phrase? Or maybe two? I have no f'in idea...). Very shortly after he waves to get the attention of the drummer and gives a 'cut' gesture. Really awesome to see that little bit of direction.
@@markc.2958 The band was at their peak - they were never better than they were those final two years or so. Well-honed and practiced after years on the road... they killed it.
I was there at that concert. At the time didn’t know my future husband was there also.At the end of this video he is two friends. He is in the middle clapping.Wearing his weed belt.In heaven now.We got together two years later.1979 we couldn’t get enough of our Lynyrd Skynyrd .Own every song they have done.Free bird is my all time favorite 👏🥰😎
the look on the crowds faces when the guitars kicked in and they realised they were witnessing the greatest band ever to plug guitars in play for them.
Man! If you didn't see Ronnie sing, you never really saw Skynyrd! I know he lived on in the hearts & minds of many after his passing, but I'm thankful the first concert I ever attended was in 1976 starring Lynyrd Skynyrd! Freebird rocked in Largo Maryland!
During the guitar solo, you see Ronnie bringing Collins and Rossington out to the stage extension, or the "tongue", which was strictly designated for the Rolling Stones and this severely pissed off Mick Jagger. You can see Collins being hesitant about being out there and gives Ronnie a look like "should we be doing this?" but does anyway. That was Ronnie, playing by his own rules.
Can you imagine the impact he would have had on today's guitarists had he survived!?!? Dude had SO much talent and I'm not sure he had the time on earth to fully realize it....
Everytime Ronnie looks at Allen its like he's sayin i might light the fuse 4 this band but Allen u sir R the bomb 4 this band best ever hands down in my book
Skynyrd will be one of the most underrated, absolute, marvelous, kick ass rock n’ roll bands in history. They will always go untouched in the books. Fly High Freebird…
That 3 lead guitar attack is just amazing, Allen, Gary and Stevie Gaines, wow they were really something special, the one thing they were told NOT to do in this concert was to go out and perform on the Stone's tongue and you can see Ronnie Van Zant pushing the 3 lead guitarist onto the Tongue, even Leon on bass guitar was out there, just freaking awesome!!!!
I watch this performance several times a year and it never fails to completely wow me. Allen Collins is one of rock's legends and unfortunately not often talked about. This performance and song (he was the primary writer on this one) should assure his name among the greats and I really hope that one day his name will be mentioned much more often when people look back at rock's greatest decade. Better still, he was so humble - just really loved playing guitar, being a husband and being a father. RIP Allen - you brought great, great joy to so many. ❤
The crowd was eerily calm, until about 6min 10 seconds in, Then they realized what they were witnessing THE BEST ROCK BAND EVER!!! PERIOD............................................
Absolutely unbelievable band, How lucky these folks there that day were!! Rock History at its best , hands down. 63 years old and these were and always will be the BEST of times!!
The Rolling Stones sued Leonard Skynyrd for that concert they weren't supposed to go out on the tongue of the stage. And Lynyrd Skynyrd showed the Rolling Stones up in that concert. Awesome 🇺🇸👊
In fairness bath bands were outstanding that night. On a bill featuring The Don Harrison Band (containing the Creedence rhythm section), Hot Tuna (featuring Kaukonen and Cassady from Jefferson Airplane), Todd Rundgren's Utopia, Skynyrd, 10cc (their last ever live performance) and the Stones. Skynyrd were magnificent and the Stones played like they had something to prove - I think it still goes down as their longest ever performance. One fabulous day though
There is a picture of that morning that features Charlie Watts talking to a apparently bemused Ronnie Van Zandt with Doug Clifford as a witness. The legend says that is the very moment when the Stones sent the message 'don't step on the tongue' to LS. No way to know if is the true moment or not, unless Clifford steps in, what we know is that Ronnie didn't give a damn about it.
The greatest rock band in the world! I loved Ronnies throat cut at the end. He was letting everybody know, we just killed it and whoever plays after us better bring it.
SOrry to hear about Gary, holy crap,,,,that dude had been through hell, i wonder what finally took him out? he had been through hell and back. He couldnt' have been that old. What did he pass away from , omg, his long friend and wife of his had to be devastated, must have been a sudden stage 4 illness or something like that , must have been caught at the very very late stages of the disease
It is indeed, but they’ve dubbed the crowd noise on it - sounds nothing like the original recording. They’ve basically put loads of applause and cheering right from the start. Ruins it.
@@charleshall9755 Any decent record shop or Amazon. Doesn't have very good revues because the record company lifted the crowd noise from another concert and added it in to the soundtrack
He was.. lol Mick Jagger know 1 goes out front on his runway... lol.. They said Phuc That.. Steve and Cassie gains were Okies! Gr8t frickin band.. Amen ..
