Summary:
After years of life on the road and with their role models, the Allman Brothers Band, struggling to survive the deaths of two of its most distinctively talented members, today Lynyrd Skynyrd has become the quintessential Southern Rock band. Under the leadership of frontman and primary songwriter Ronnie Van Zant, the group's melodic lyric driven ballads and power driven hard rockers would catapult the group into one of the most popular touring bands in the world. The group's distinctive guitar attack, combined with an overtly defiant and rebellious attitude, gave them a cultural identity that would help make songs like "Sweet Home Alabama" and "Free Bird" into anthems of American rock music and staples of FM radio right up to the present day.
Headlining a bill that also featured the Outlaws, this Winterland recording captures Lynyrd Skynyrd following the release of their fourth album, Gimme Back My Bullets. This was during a transitional phase for the band, following the departure of guitarist Ed King, but prior to his replacement, Steve Gaines, coming on board. The band was carrying on as a six-piece unit, augmented by the Honkettes on backing vocals.
This is an interesting time to hear the band live, as their trademark three-guitar attack was reduced by one guitar, leaving more room for keyboardist Billy Powell. On the ballads, like "Tuesdays Gone" and the pre-jam verses of "Freebird," Powell displays great creativity and expands the keyboard's role in these songs.
Otherwise, the band rocks as hard as ever, with a good selection of their most popular songs, sampling a bit from all four of their studio albums. The group's defiant Southern swagger, combined with an infectious guitar and piano driven groove, creates an irresistible combination that resonated far beyond the Southern states. Two of the standouts on this show are both well chosen covers, which the band redefines as their own; J.J. Cale's "Call Me The Breeze" and Jimmy Rogers' "T For Texas." Both of these are rearranged in classic Skynyrd style, with the latter closing the set and clearly displaying the root sound of the band at its best.
The audience demands an encore and the band obliges with a monumental "Free Bird." It begins as a plaintive slow ballad, with Van Zant's distinctively sad vocals over the melodic keyboard playing of Powell and delicate slide guitar ornamentation from Rossington. However, it is the second section, which becomes an up-tempo guitar boogie, that really hits home. Here the guitarists cut loose to create one of the most distinctive solos of all time. Rossington and Collins turn this section into a soaring jam that also features impressive melodic bass playing from Wilkeson and furious keyboards from Powell. Following a brief reprise of the song, they turn on a dime back into the groove of the jam before bringing it to a climactic close.
"Free Bird," more often than not, sarcastically, would become the most requested song of all time. For musicians, this inevitable request has become so tiresome, that the act of requesting it has become universally known as "the mantra of the moron." Still, this only goes to prove just how deeply this song has permeated American culture and is a testament to its enduring popularity, making it one of the true landmark rock songs of twentieth century music.

Seemed like we really hit it off and alot of the time he would put his arm around me if he happened to look at someone else to speak , like he didn't want me to get away. I invited him to my home for soup beans and cornbread and he said they had to leave right after the show or he would surely take me up on home cooking. He even showed me his glass eye , he lost in a go cart wreck after the plane crash . When I heard he had died it felt like I had lost a friend !!!!!!

Also a Beatles tribute band. She now loves music of my era more that anything else. Bands today seem manufactured and nowhere near the talent of bands in the 60's, 70's, and 80's.

Yes. I think they weren't afraid to be bold & innovative how they played. Like when they got Billy boy honky tonken his piano. It made them whole & added to their original line-up. Their guitarists are so renowned for their nearly freestyling way of playing. Switching from lead to rhythm & lengthy plays between lyrics & other subtle changes. Blending out for piano to lead were master strokes in their unique style still marvelled at today. Free Byrd is a ballad. Lyrics succinctly telling a story are short. These guys got the stones to come up with guitar solos that play twice as long as the song itself. Amazing concept showcasing enormous talent possessed by Lynard Skynard.

Just a few currents that I really love. Chris Stapleton top of my list, Blackberry Smoke, these guys are great southern rock band that pays tribute to the 70's bands but also has their own music, hopefully you guys know them. Gov't Mule or where ever Warren Haynes is, Billy Strings. Guess there are a few more when I really think abt it but majority of the time I am listening to 60's-70's w/ a lil 80's thrown in because the crap being put on today is such fluff & everyone sounds alike. It is sad

They were due to be in my town in Nov but obviously that never happened. I am super grateful I got to see RCB in 1980. They kicked ass & most of the surviving guys were there. Got to see Gary & Allen tearing it up, Billy Powell, I loved his piano, that boogie woogie southern thing he did so well so grateful for that. They played instrumental Free Bird w/a spotlight on mic as 50,000 grown men & women sobbed & hugged each other. One of the biggest outpouring of love I have ever been a part of

My sentiments exactly. Ronnie said he would not see 30 years of life , and said it many times to many people. Try to find bad lyrics that no one should hear. Look at Metallica for example. I did and it blew my mind. Look at " The god that failed ". Ronnie was saved the way Jesus said. If you believe that God sent his Son to die for all of our sins , was murdered , rose from the dead and is at the Right hand of the Father. Romans 10:9 says ( " That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved. That's pretty simple. You will still sin but you will be more aware when you do. You don't become sinless. You become sin-less. You don't have to do nothing else. You are SAVED FROM ETERNAL HELL and separation from God. I used to drink gallons of beer everyday. Now I drink 1-3 a week , sometimes none. Doing it doesn't convict or bother me . The KJV Bible says your good to go until you lose your faculties ( Drunk ). If you lose your faculties after 3 or four beers then you need not drink. I know I am rambling but it's the most important thing a person needs to 100% positive about. God made us and we play by his rules or our rules and we lose , every time! If I'm wrong and we all die like dogs and feel nothing at death and cease to exist then we're good to go! But if I'm right according to the Holy Bible ............then I have gained it all , living with God and Christ in Heaven forever and ever and ever. ETERNITY!!!!!! And I will see my precious Mama and the others! " “Hallelujah Praise God Almighty For those that have ears to hear let them hear , and for those with eyes to see let them see! p.s. Ronnie had the Holy Spirit in him. There is no other explanation for him foretelling his death. Listen to the song Raiford !

This was the Sunday night show. Skynyrd was originally going to play 2 nights at Winterland (Fri & Sat) but had to add the 3rd night when those shows sold out so fast. I was at the Friday night show and it was awesome (as usual) even though this was the period right after Ed King had left the group and before Steve Gaines was added so they only had Gary and Allen on guitars. They still tore it up, the Outlaws opened for them and they were tremendous as well. I was lucky enough to see the band 3 times before the tragic plane crash. Gary used to actually play a lot of lead back then compared to the role he has in the present incarnation of Skynyrd.

some of my favorite harmonies are hearing Steve and Ronnie sing together...of course Steve Gaines would then rip the snot out of an incredibly lyrical lead on his guitar, just an amazing add, and wham...those guys just plain stomped it when they played....they played with purpose...but they absolutely LOVED doing what they did...76-77..Steve was an insanely awesome find, and add for skynyrd...I loved Ed King too....but I see Ronnie's badassed self just wouldn't fly anymore with Ed. Sad...Rossington said when Ed left, him and Allen were THE only guitars...and they had to fill in for Where Ed left off and try to fill that HOLLOW assed hole....anyway..Its all a shame losing THIS band, the way we lost them....sad assed... "... Steve Gains joined the Band and gave them a whole new dimension!" They NEEDED him, bad, and this show helps indicate why. They needed a shot in the arm. Here & there, in spots, things had become a little stale. Sorry diehards, but it's true; tho these numbers STILL may be better than most live acts. They set their own sky-high bar.

What a gem of a concert, no lip syncing here, you can even hear the buzz from guitar amps. 3 of the best southern pickers around and Ronnie Van Zant. Great song writers, Skynyrd at its best. There will never be another band like them ever again.

Billy Powell was seriously one of the most beautiful sounding piano players ever. WOW, could he play!

He was a classical music player early on in his career ... I read where he played Free Bird for Ronnie in a classical way to get into the band. The piano playing really set well with the band. R&R ... It contained some many different instruments ...

It’s a sad day knowing that Rossington has passed on. No more suffering here though sir. God Bless him, his family, & the entire Lynyrd Skynyrd family & organization. Such a massive catalog & legacy. They will continue to influence & serenade us for many generations to come. Nothing but respect & love. Fly high & rock on Free Birds everywhere, you are my people. 🙏🏼❤️🇺🇸💪🏼

My favorite band of all time for sure. I played the game decades ago "If you were stranded on a desert island, what 1 artist/band catalog would you want to have at your disposal?" I answered Lynyrd Skynyrd then & still holds true today. I listen to their music every day pretty much, sometimes a song, sometimes 10 & I never gt tired of hearing them. It eiuld be nice to have u tube on that island because the only thing better than listening to them is to watch them play live!

Agree wholeheartedly. Nothing beats the 70's imo. Poor kids today are f**king clueless it's tragic seriously. And btw Skynrd for me died Oct. 20 '77. But like I've said the music lives forever. Thank God above at least there is some video!! Nothing even comes close. Ha ok so now let me tell you how I really feel.
