I took all the bits and pieces of this video from all over the web and edited them together into one video ...hope you enjoy!!! Better viewed at full screen size.... uploaded 11-22-10 good thing youtube went to 15 minutes.....
I was a kid and saw this in the theatre before Grease....I was so proud they were from my hometown and I knew Coach Skinner pretty well..I havent seen this in over 35 years..Thanks so much for posting it.
I used to live nearby in Gainesville Florida, the home of Tom Petty, Don Felder of the Eagles, Molly Hatchet. Something in the water down there that I didn't get enough of!
If only the pilots would have had more respect for the bands safety instead of concerning himself with the money that he was lining his pockets with. Lynyrd Skynyrd would still be alive today. RIP Ronnie, Cassie, Steve & Dean. You all are missed and loved so much.
Agree! I read somewhere that Ronnie said “the greatest form of respect is people still listening to your music 50 years after you wrote it” and I think he’d be amazed that so many years later hes still looked at as a icon and the band is still popular
@@JCDwyer don’t forget Steve Gaines... when he came into the fold us when they got really tight! Could you imagine the music that would’ve came out of that group if things had gone different...
I have waited a LONG TIME to see this again. I was one of those lucky people who saw this in theaters in 1978, just prior to the movie "Grease" being shown. Thank-you a million times over, Tony!
"We never really thought we'd ever make it". Thank God they weren't the types to give up. Hard to accept that so many of them are gone now. Great upload, Tony.
I saw parts of this in the 70's but had myself convinced that it didn't really exist. Thanks for finding and posting it. It has some of the best excerpts ever!
Im the saddest for Alan Collins. I mean the entire crash was pure tragedy , I just feel sorry for Alan, he had one hard jagged hand of cards dealt to him & then to ultimately die a terrible illness. just sucks
Rest in eternal peace, Ronnie. We STILL love you. (check out my pic... yeah that's ARTIMUS himself) Drop a "LIKE" here if you're STILL listening to these great musicians 42 years later.
As Long as I Live They are the Life of My Music Since I Play Guitar and Build Sound System's and Analog Sound Production Systems Alright 😎👍💯🍀🌈🎻🦉✴️👇!!! Neil Steel Sound Production and Owlshorn Recording Production Systems Alright 😎👍💯🎻❤️!!!!!!!
Duchess Jus...• I'll be 59, this month and I have listened TO LYNYRD, SKYNYRD since 1974, when I got my first paycheck, working on a summer youth program when I was on summer vacation from school i went to the record store and bought 2 LYNYRD SKYNYRD albums PRONOUNCED and second helping, and I still listen to them they sound great live.
No other band has suffered more tragedies than LS but their music lives on forever. RIP - Ronnie Van Zant, Steve and Cassie Gaines, Allen Collins, Ed King, Billy Powell, Bob Burns, Leon Wilkeson, Jo Jo Billingsley
This may be the only time I've actully heard Allen Collins being interviewed. I love how he describes each members role in making music. Thank you for keeping their legacy alive, Tony!!
He didn't like doing interviews, sometimes Dean Kilpatrick wouod go in his place. Lol when Dean grew his hair really long, it looked a lot like Allen's & RVZ would pass him off as Allen. There are a few RCB interviews w/Gary, Allen & Dale. Allen says something to effect of Dale is a wailin bitch, we heard her & said we'll take her. That was Allen.
Idiot. Nope pilots didnt bother to check fuel. Hence ran out of fuel. Also ignored warnings. Ignored advice to get mechanic and part flown to them not other way around.
Heard about the crash on WLS AM in Chicago the minute it came over the wires. Street Survivors was tearing up the charts and that tour was the hottest ticket in town. They were on the cusp of something huge. This was one of the greatedt tragedies in Rock and Roll history. Fly High Free Bird.
I've been a Lynyrd skynyrd fan since 1970 when I was 6 years old the first time I heard them been fan ever since till this day 11 6 2019 and for ever I will listen to them till my dieing day my God bless the best band that ever Perform and just thank they came out of the South thank god love them forever
Here for Gary Rossington. Rest In Peace Prince Charming. Billy's Tuesdays Gone parts make me tear up :( He really does touch your Soul & Heart with this part
I know it's been 11 years but I wanted to thank you for uploading this as I'd never seen it before. There's not that much video or interviews from the old band out there and it was nice to see something new to me.
Garrett Ramsey We’re getting fewer and fewer but it’s alright because we are going to fucking jam in the next life. This message is for everyone who was on that fucked up plane. Don’t you ever pull some shit like that on my birthday again. I love all of them. Vid should mention the pilots who crash landed the Free Bird. I jumped out of planes in the 82d Abn Div with the son of 1 of the pilots named McCreary. He was a solid kid.
I remember seeing this in the movie theatre back in the 1970's; it was such a shock, a very wonderful surprise. Long live the music and spirit of Lynyrd Skynyrd!
hi tony, you did us all a great service by posting this. i've loved skynyrd since the first time i heard them way back in 75-76. i'll never forget the day i heard about the crash...damn they were so good ! thanks again son.
This was shown in the Southeast in the movie theaters.. before GREASE .. I have heard of it since 79/80.. "Ronnie and Gary fishing.. with some other interviews and some live songs".. Been looking for it for 34 damned years!! Now that Sisyphus stone has been pushed over the top of the mtn.. it brings up.. WHY was Pepsi filming and what were they gonna do with it? An ABC special? They did run lots of special music shows at 11:30.. so..maybe? And we need to contact the cameramen and see how much more was filmed and who's got it..I know .. good luck with that.. but I found this after 34 yrs! Thanks from all the Skynyrd fans that never got to see it..
Pepsi was planning on making a bunch of "product placement" commercials with Skynyrd. After the crash they (wisely) decided that they couldn't try to make money off the band and used the footage to make this tribute, which I think was pretty cool of them. I read part of a recent interview with one of the cameramen. He said that they were contracted to follow and film the band over the course of 21 days. He further stated that there was TONS of footage taken but he doesn't know what happened to it and assumes it's out there in a vault somewhere just waiting to see the light of day again.
Also, Skynyrd's management had worked out a corporate sponsorship with Pepsi. One of the first in rock and roll. You can read about it in Ron Eckerman's book about his days as Skynyrd's road manager. The book is titled 'Turn It Up'
I end up at the same place every time I watch something like this. So much waste and sadness for no good reason, absolutely preventable. The whole thing is just so sad.
The greatest band of all time without a doubt! We just lost the last r rebel Gary rossington the all of the original we're now in Rock and roll heaven making music together we will never forget you and all of the great music that you made
Amen brother 🙏, I still get sad when I hear these stories of the band, they seemed like my old gang growing up, playing ball together, running around, chasing girls 😊, they had the incredible talent, drive, passion to make it big, no telling what they would have done if? God Bless Skyward 😎😎
Pepsi was going to be a sponsor for the band. They went to a meeting in Aug 77 according to Ron Eckerman, tour mgr which was huge deal for them. I guess it must have gone through & they shot this footage for a kick off maybe? If anyone knows more abt that, I would be interested to hear it. It meant Pepsi would cover a lof of expenses & 1 reason they were going to upgrade to a Learjet. So sad, they were so close to getting rid of the other plane.
Ron and Peter Rudge nickle and dimed Skynyrd to death. Literally. Rudge business was surviving off of Skynyrd cash;he was bankrupt within months of that plane crash(the POS they chose). Eckerman felt guilt,Rudge not so much.
Right at the height of their greatness. Artimus Pyle was the right guy for the band when Bob Burns's medical issues preventing him from staying. RIP Billy Powell, such a great musician and part of the sound, making them more than "hard rock", and adding the Delta blues, jazz and country. RIP Ronnie Van Zandt, a man like no other and could have only been produced from southern poverty and traditions, mixed with a crazy hybrid of good ol' boy fighter/ drinker mixed with some hippie philosopher. Steve Gaines (RIP) added brilliant country blues and elements of jazz, and could take over for Ronnie singing, whilst he grabbed a shot, and hardly anyone but me and a few fans noticed. His sister Cassie Gaines epitomized the "Honkettes" image of tough and sexy - RIP.
Ronnie, when not drinking and singing, seemed like a real cool and thoughtful person who anyone would love to have as their neighbor. I'm sure that's one of the reasons he is still missed and loved everyday to this day.
Ronnie is so soft spoken. Truly a songwriter. Love Lynrd Skynrd. One of those bands that capture a moment in time & personify so much more than just the songs.
These men right here are legends I feel like if that plain crash didn't happen I could only imagine what they could of made they were something special
One of the most amazing things happened to me, in my whole life, is realizing that having been LS fan at 70s, when I was 14, no other rock and roll band got producing so good music since then.
I love this. Just saw them Friday night in Nashville. I lived in Jacksonville on the St. Johns river where Ronnie is fishing.....so glad to find this video......thank you for this..........
Well it's now 2023 and all of the original members of Lynyrd Skynyrd are gone on to Rock and Roll Heaven. They all may be gone but will never ever be forgotten. Thank you for all of the greatest music of all time. Gary Rossington was the last true Southern Rock Gentleman to pass away. " Fly High Free Birds" soar on the wing's of that Proud Bird in the sky. Long Live Lynyrd Skynyrd.
These 7 or 8 guys in the band, all superior musicians. Technically they couldn’t be matched. Creativity above all else. Tuesdays Gone, Simple Man, Freebird, That Smell, Saturday Night Special...Gimme Three Steps, Sweet Home Alabama...on and on they were by far the most skilled band at every position. Never will we have a special virtuoso lineup like this.
I saw Lynyrd Skynyrd play last night, even though it wasn’t the real band it was just awesome hearing these songs played live. I literally cried during free bird because of how profoundly sad that song is with the context of it being the last song the band performed before the crash. these guys will always be my absolute favorite rock band and they are my heroes. may they Rest In Peace!!
I never knew where the name Lynyrd Skynyrd came from. How cool must it be to have such an iconic and legendary band named after you. Great job editing this video. You did an amazing job. RIP Bob....you are truly a FREE BIRD now.
You're quite welcome. And btw, I am going to see Lynyrd Skynyrd and Peter Frampton on August 4th (had my ticket since March lol). I can't wait!!! I just wish my son still lived here so he could go with me. We always went to concerts together with the last one being Styx, Foreigner and Don Felder 2 years ago. I'll be going to this concert alone but with all of the people in the crowd it never feels like you are alone at these amazing concerts!!
43 Years, when I think about it it seems like yesterday it happened. doesn't seem like it's been that many years you guys are up there in Rock and Roll Heaven rocking up a storm y'all have a good time while you're up there , you hear.
I live in Greenville SC where the last show took place..the old Greenville Memorial Auditorium is gone now but legend has it that when the wind blows a certain way around the old venue site you can still hear the beautiful sustain and feedback from Lynyrd Skynyrd,,,,R.I.P. our Southern Friends 😭
I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE A TICKET STUB AND PROMO POSTER FROM THAT LAST SHOW..... OR THE ONE FROM L.S.U THAT NEVER TOOK PLACE BECAUSE OF THE CRASH. I HAVE SEVERAL ALBUMS INCLUDING AN ORIGINAL STREET SURVIVORS.
great job Tony-love the full interview with Allen that they edited out in the 'Freebird' movie- and the rest too...Billy's part was awesome....love hearing him play Beethoven into 'Tuesday's Gone' good to see where it came from...THAT was always MY favorite Skynyrd Tune
Thirty five years ago today (August 27, 1977), I was at the concert seen in this video. (Anaheim Stadium, Anaheim California) For $10 we witnessed Lynryd Skynyrd, Ted Nugent, REO Speedwagon and Foreignor. Each band was at the top of it's game, and Skynyrd was the toppermost. Fly high, Freebird....
i would swap my 4 very loved chilren and every penny i could riase to have been at that concert i keep the skynyrd sound going down in brisbane australia have giutar playing youngsters in family who thankfully come to me to be dosed with regular hits from the greatest band to touch our hearts but this concert why i had not herd before but stunning lineup wow
@@diegogardner4916 Huh? This may surprise you, but there were no cell phones, in those days, and you went through what was nearly a cavity check entering the arena. Anyone getting smuggled footage of shows did so via a Super 8 camera, which did not record sound and could only be recorded in 50 foot, three minute segments. Most teenagers didn't get much more than lunch money, so there was no "disposable income' for about 90% of the population. I got my ticket by going without lunch and pocketing change until it added up to the price of a ticket.
“Toppermost,” dude I love it!!!!!! Skynyrd is definitely worth the invention of a new word!!!!!!!! Rock on, Frynd, very cool that you were there for that show
@@JCDwyer Thanks, JC. It was one hell of a time to be a young rock fan, although I wish I had seen the first wave of greats from the previous decade. I can't take credit for 'toppermost', though. That one was invented by John Lennon. Another great rocker of some note...
Whew!!!! I saw everyone of their concerts that came to the S.F. Bay Area. Started at 20 yrs of age until that horrific plan crash and that was it for me. I was shocked and crying in my best friend's bed room when we heard the news. They were suppose to come back to San Francisco that year in 1977. They will always be my favorite group. You will always live in my heart, Ronnie, Steve, Cassie and road manager Dean Kilpratrick..
Thank you so much for posting this...it brings back some incredible memories. I drug my grandmother to the drive in (I was 13) to see this she reluctantly went and brought along my 2 younger cousins who wanted to see grease....I will always remember the look on all their faces (in the car) while I sat on the hood jamming out and crying (I was 13) Priceless....
I agree with you, that a dream can be very real. I truly feel that everyone on that plane prayed to God. I know that was what I would of done, and they went to heaven. Thats the only way I can and want to believe. Other wise this life holds no hope and doesn"t make a bit of sense. I'm so glad we have their amazing music to listen to. Love&Peace
I grew up just outside Birmingham, AL. saw these guys live 4 times. Three of them outdoor shows at Rickwood Field. In Oct. 77 I was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center. In the middle of the 4 barracks buildings where I lived there was a game room with pool and pinball machines and you could get beer and burgers. I walked in one day and saw some guys checking out the headlines at a newspaper machine. . All I could see was "Rock band members killed" asked a guy who was putting change in the machine "Who was it ?" He handed me a paper and said Lynyrd Skynyrd !" I was floored, couldn't believe it.
@SkynyrdLover1 If this helps narrow it down...I've read that Allen Collins wore that hat onstage a few times during the bi-centennial year, so that would've made it '76. The story goes that he really liked it and enjoyed wearing it!
The voice of a generation died Oct 20th now the angels enjoy the inspiration's of Ronnie,Steve, Cassie. God bless yall and hope see yall up there one day till then with angels arms sing on
Thanks for this Tony. I was at that Anaheim Stadium show while in the Marines stationed right down the road at the Santa Ana Tustin Helicopter base. On the floor of course that day as usual as Anaheim Stadium shows were all General Admission back in those days (pre-The Who deadly show) 45 years later being there was one of the greatest memories and blessings of my life. Thanks again this wonderful work and for the memories that it brings back
awesome video. I never knew this existed until today and I've been watching alot of Skynyrd videos on youtube over the years. I love the interview with Coach Leonard Skinner. I wonder if he spelled his name with the Ys afterwards.
Great Video, I would love to see some video from "One more from the road " which was recorded july 7-9 1976 at the fox theater in Atlanta. Keep up the great work.
I didn't really get to know about Skynyrd until this year because my sister said they were her late husband's favorite ... a documentery was on Showtime I checked it out and have been obsessed ever since I watch every thing I can on them I especially love that young Gary!!! that wavy hair and green eyes are killer!!!! Prince Charming fo sure!!!!!!
Steve says "it's been kinda like a Disneyland tale for me." With a heartbreaking end. RIP Steve, Ronnie, Allen, Leon, Billy, Bob, Ed, Cassie, Jo Jo, and Dean.
Wow, thank you for this. My mother took me to see Grease in the theater when I was about 12, This film was shown in the theater before the main movie. I remembered it my whole life, but never saw it again until now.
In 1977 was truly a devastating year. We lost three members of Lynyrd Skynyrd , Elvis Presley . I also lost one of my Uncle's he was 27 years old he shot himself. Plus my dad lost his cousin he jumped off the cliffs of a quarry and broke his neck when he hit the water below. Plus my uncle that shot himself his daughter that same year was diagnosed with leukemia. It all comes back around because she went to a concert in 1992 with me and some other people. Just a little over a month and a half after the concert she ended up passing away. The last song that night was Free Bird that was played at the concert it was probably the happiest that I had seen her in a long time. I just wish that she would've gotten her bone marrow transplant that she needed. I think that she would still be here if she had.
