Gerald Deliva So you're saying karate techniques don't work? I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

His stand-up style is karate. As a youth he trained judo, BJJ, and Sumo for wrestling/groundgame. When he became interested in MMA, he trained "40 days" in Thailand learning muay Thai. I believe he was in his early 20's at that time and fighting in Japan (or maybe just before). Point is, his standup game is 99% karate.

Super Friday I used to do karate and Taekwondo but it's painfully obvious that Lyoto Obviously cross trains for MMA. Karate definitely works but it still has a lot of useless stuff like Katas in it. It's safe to say karate is old traditional martial art which is great for kickboxing but incomplete

He fights professionally, and yes a well rounded fighter will learn striking and grappling, by focusing 100% on one area, you'll go up against someone who knows this and will focus on the other area. Fact is he's a karateka first and foremost. He recognizes the limitations of his karate and went out and learned how to compliment and fix that. That is what any good martial artist would do. I think those who compare karaté and kickboxing/thaï boxing or mma are just idiots , they surely never tried them once. I met very dangerous guy from these disciplines and i respect all of them. Modern day Shotokan, not the older form is a fantastic striking art which blends well with other arts. In Machida's case Sumo and BJJ. It's strategy of controlling the Maai and Sabaki or the distance and movement is developed to a high degree. Muay Thai and by extension Kyokushin Karate uses more powerful techniques ( a lot of which they copied from the Thais after getting their butts handed to them in some friendly matches). Although they practice Maai and Sabaki they seem to prefer to just walk straight through and destroy their opponents. But their weakness at least in the case of Kyokushin, is they don't practice head movement at all and walk in with their heads upright and vulnerable to strikes. Shotokan is more like a western boxer who waits for the perfect time and distance to set up his opponent for attacks and counters. Look at Manny Pacquiao and you will see a similar entry and attacking motion. Shotokans weakness is their choice of weaker strikes especially in the kicking area. Kyokushin Karate although derived from Mas Oyama's study of both Goju and the older style of Shotokan and Korean Tae Kwan Do has a very different strategy one more similar to Muay Thai with whom they are now more competitive and similar with. Muay Thai is really a sport derived from the Thai martial Art Muay Boran which is more war like as they also incorporate weapons in their training, But Muay Thai as a hand to hand fighting style is devastating. Their concept of 8 limbs allows for more techniques to bring to a stand up fight, They have also developed a stance and body movement which is more balanced and leads to less falling when they strike than Karate. But their weakness is also their stance and body movement which restricts their ability to handle more dynamic fighters like a Michael Page or Raymond Daniels or more recently a Tenshin Nasukawa. And they are very vulnerable to spinning and back kicks unless they prepare a strategy against the fighter using those techniques. Machida has developed a style which combines the distance and movement control of Shotokan with the power striking of Kyokushin and Muay Thai and added Sumo and BJJ to cover those flanks. I would choose him over any pure Muay Thai or pure Kyokushin fighter in an MMA style match as he proved against Sam Greco , Kyokushin and Michael Mcdonald , Canadian kickboxer. Both K1 level fighters. And if he chooses to keep the tradition of practicing his style's Kata how can you judge it as ineffective. It seems to work for him and other fighters like GSP who's striking background is Kyokushin,

@AusarisTV
@AusarisTV 7 лет назад
Was also going to add on that from an observation I made was that Thai Boxers (generally speaking) tend to have very bad punching defense, not because of the actual art of Muay Thai, but because of how they train for competition. To my knowledge, punches are awarded no points in a MT match on the judges score cards so they tend to focus on kicks, elbows, knees, and clinch fighting. I believe this is one of the reasons why Ramon Dekkers (Dutch Kickboxing which is a blend of Kyokushin, Muay Thai, and Western Boxing) and many other Dutch fighters were so successful in Thailand, because they overwhelmed them with extremely technical punches (western boxing combinations with low kicks at the end), footwork, and angles. Also, look at the Masato (Karate though I'm not sure what form) vs Buakauw fight and you will see exactly what I mean as an example of many MT practitioners not having good punching defense, even at an elite level.
@nbrace-tl8ku
@nbrace-tl8ku 7 лет назад
Ausaris TV - We are in agreement on this. One other fighter, Georgio Petrosyan. He went up against the Thai destroyer, Buakaw, early in his (Georgio's) career. Although not full Muay Thai rules, their fight was a masterpiece of technique, skill, power and strategy. Georgio's superior Boxing skills turned the fight around and to this Day I have not seen any one else put the damage on Buakaw that Georgio did. I became a huge fan of Georgio's after that fight. I honestly believed he won that fight but I can understand anyone who disagrees. Kyokushin combined with proper Boxing Skills is devastating, no doubt but sometimes Tradition and Pride get in the way and will not allow them to innovate. A few of their high level BBs have left the Kyokushin system and created their own styles which incorporate Boxing and even grappling. Kudo Karate and Shidokan Karate are two. So we are on the same page as far as this goes .OSS! Lol

katas are stupid and demonic, serve no purpose except a bit of a workout, fighting imaginary attackers does not make you better at fighting it makes you better at katas and having an imagination, machida isn't good because he does kata, he is good because he trains and has genetic skills, kata won't make you worse as a fighter, and it may help a bit for balance and muscle tone but you could do so many different training that has better bang for the buck and better use for time. How do I know? I have been training in martial arts for 30 years, 6th dan black belt and has done thousands of hours of kata, take 2 guys with similar skill sets, get one guy to train 2 hours a day on specific fighting techniques and the other guy only 1 hour of fighting techniques and 1 hour kata, when it's time to fight you will see who has the better skills.

Lul what the hell are you talking about? his technique is crisp, and his bunkai even crisper. Don't forget his style is a family style, not strictly shotokan, so it stands to reason that there will be some differences in the execution of some techniques. Still, good mae geri?the mae geri were his weakest point in the entire kata compared to, for example, his mikazuki geri, which was marvellous. People just tend to forget that kata are meant to be applied. Have a look at some of the kata practiced by the okinawan masters of goju ryu and uechi ryu. Yeah, not as athletic looking as the sport variant of unsu, but there's actually substance behind it and a purpose, not just trying to be a good-looking coreography.

Muay thai didn't help Moussasi in his fight with Lyoto. Although I agree muay thai has more tools , Karate blends itself very well with MMA. Alots of MMA guys have karate as their striking and do extremely well in MMA. George Saint Pierre, Uriah Hall, Vitor Belfort , Michael Page amongst others.

Why must we always compare styles to see which is better were all martial artists cant we all just get along!!!!! but personally I love Karate especially for its foot sweeps, Id love to see that in MMA :)

Evan pete basso Yes it does. Seems that you have no idea of who this is. I trained here for a full month only and sparred my friend who had trained muay thai and jiu jitsu for 4months and I ended the fight in 15 seconds.
