This beautiful song is a real gem of Ukrainian songwriting Words by Leonid Hlibov Music by Mykola Lysenko Performed by Anatoliy Solovyanenko accompanied by the National Bandurist Chapel of Ukraine
OMG:I've known this song in English for years and years. Tilly Olsen, the writer, translated it and we sang it at camp every summer. I teach it sometimes, but it is so sad. Thanks to whomever posted it. Half my family is from Belarus by way of Israel, but we've been in the US since 1900.
A beautiful, melodious song. Good video background. The song is sad, completely in line with the grief of Ukrainian mothers after their fallen sons and husbands.
There stands a high majestic hill, A grove beside its shelf, Its green abode is dense and still Like paradise itself. A little river curls beneath, It’s shimmering like glass, And flows to distant lands across The valley full of grass. Some boats are tethered in the shade Beside the river shore, Three willow trees have bent down low, As though they’re deep in mourn. Sweet summer will be over soon, Cold winds will start to blow, The willow trees will lose their leaves, With water they will flow. Oh river, spring will come to you, More sunny days will dawn, My youth will not be back anew, It is forever gone!...
