The most consistently overlooked and underrated Successor, Lysimachus served alongside Alexander the Great for the entirety of his campaign and then struggled to build a kingdom to call his own for 42 years. This is his story

I think he was very underrated. Im sure he played a big part in civilizing Thrace which would later be key for the Romans.

If somebody tried to feed me to a lion, I’d love telling the story too. I wouldn’t make up the story and then enjoy telling it though. It’s not fun telling stuff you make up.

Did he really control Bithynia, Pontus, and Caria after Ipsus? I thought they were all independent or under Antipatrid control.
@ThersitestheHistorian
@ThersitestheHistorian 5 лет назад
I'm not sure exactly how much control he had over Bithynia and Pontus or what Cassander got for his part in the war. From what I can gather, the main reward for Cassander was getting his brother Pleistarchus placed in power in Cilicia. I will have to do more research on the early history of Pontus.
@ChevyChase301
@ChevyChase301 5 лет назад
Thersites the Historian didn’t Cassanders brother also get control of Caria and after he was ousted from Cilicia in 300 BC he ruled solely in caria?
@ThersitestheHistorian

@@ChevyChase301 I'm not sure. I need to research Pleistarchus and do a video just on him at some point, so that will be something that I will be investigating.

Interesting that Antigonus relied more on his generals (and his brilliant son) in military affairs whereas Lysimachus single-handedly put down revolts and led his armies. Really does accentuate his natural-born gift of strategy IMO
@ThersitestheHistorian

It may have been a matter of necessity as he may not have had many talented and reliable commanders to all upon. That being said, one would think that he would work to cultivate talented subordinates.

Unlike some of his more chivalrous colleagues, Lysimachus really liked to execute people. Perhaps his reputation as a barbarian was well earned after all?

Well, when he was sent to Thrace,, it was sort of exile for him. Poor country where his retinue was always outnumbered by hordes of unruly barbarians. Id like to think of him as colonel Kurtz (Apocalypse Now), lol.

what is the population density of this region? these armies are enormous how do they grow enough food to feed them all? where does all the money come from to hire 10000 mercs?
@ThersitestheHistorian
@ThersitestheHistorian 5 месяцев назад
I'm not sure that information is readily available, although there may be some archaeological surveys with some broad estimates. In terms of food, that can be collected as a tax in kind, imported in bulk by sea, or appropriated locally. Most of the pay distributed by the Successors was taken from existing Persian stockpiles at their various treasure houses and it took most of the 2nd Century BCE for those to finally out of coin.

would it be accurate to say that the continuation of the macedonian empire was mostly infighting between the antigonids, seleucids and ptolemaics? (maybe molossians as well?)
@ThersitestheHistorian
@ThersitestheHistorian Год назад
Yes. The Molossians/Epirotes were a minor power, but they had a claim to the Macedonian throne because of their marriage into the Argead house.
