Big Picture: M-60 King of Armor
Department of Defense. Department of the Army. Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations. U.S. Army Audiovisual Center. (ca. 1974 - 05/15/1984). This film presents the story of the development, testing, and use of the M-60 tank in the U.S. Army. Scenes trace the origin of the modern tank and the need to create a mobile armored vehicle that could carry enough fire power to destroy machine gun emplacements as it led its troops through the line.

I grew up on Fort Hood in the 70s and 80s. No armor company of M60s went out to the field without their M88 recovery vehicle and MANY times I have seen a M88 pulling M60s back into the motor pools. Back then they were not very reliable but I bet they were better than a T62. Loved this video, reminds of the training films that was on TV when you lived on post. Thank you for posting.

"Power pack"? If that's the tank's _engine,_ why don't they just call it the _engine?_

@@charlesbukowski9836depends on the ammo fired. 3bm3 would really struggle against an m60a1 both in turret and hull. Turret of regular m60 would be no match for the 3bm3 but the a1 turret will make it struggle a lot

The M60 was a superior tank. It had a hatch in the bottom so you could take a piss without stopping or ever leaving the tank.

Wow! A documentary that actually gets it historically accurate. Most books, accounts, movies, and documentaries state that the new Tank doctrine and tactics that the world would soon label "Blitzkreig" and that are still the bread and butter of armor forces the world over, were actually invented by Rommel. As it relates here accurately however, it was in fact Guderian, then a Colonel. It was because Colonel Guderian was Rommels second in command when he invented the tactics that Rommel unfairly received the credit. Rommel seemed to have incredible luck. First he is credited with Guderians genius, then in Africa he happened to luck out again as it so happened the American Military Attache from the American embassy in Cario had been sending the entirety of British 8th Army combat plans, strengths, dispositions, order of battle..The whole kit and caboodle back to Washington for FDR to read through the Cario embassy. Unfortunately the Germans had broken those codes months earlier so Rommel was getting everything making.defeating the British childsplay. In fact that is how he earned his nickname "Desert Fox", because it seemed magical that he would pop up I the exact right place and time with perfect force to beat the British every single time. The compromised code was discovered right before Montgomery was given command and he unfairly received the credit for the victory at El Alamein even though he used the previous generals basic plans except he made some changes like attacking into. The strongest portion of the German line reasoning they wouldn't expect that, and no they didn't expect the British general to.he stupid so he was correct in that. Montgomery also totally misused his tank forces, then amazingly he accused them of being cowards even though the breakdown of their attacks was 100% his fault. But he British didn't have any competent generals so England made him into a hero.through creative reporting. By many accounts from those who served with and under Rommel he was only average at best. He was a mean person and his soldiers tried their best to.avoid him if they could and he didn't care about the safety and well-being of his troops, launching attack after attack. In the same manner failing again and again with high casualties like at Trobruk. The British commander at Trobruk commented " They can on in the same old way and we killed them in the same old way". Casualties just didn't matter to Rommel. Guardian by comparison was loved by his troops, they even painted a large G on all their vehicles out of pride that they served under him.

I really enjoyed this video, mostly because the software used to decipher the narrator's words so they could be shown as the bottom of the picture made some pretty humorous/ridiculous mistakes.
