Hello everyone! Today we are going to be taking a look at M. Graham gouache. This brand focuses on providing high quality, lightfast paints. Their range consists of 35 highly pigmented colors, none of which have added fillers or chalk so that artists can control the opacity and amount of white added to each mixture themselves. So, are a few of these paints worth investing in over large sets of craft-quality gouache? Let’s take a look!

Sarah Burns is another gouache artist. I’ve learned so much from her. I’m a watercolor artist first. Once I figured out how to use gouache, I love it. That wasn’t the case when I first started with that medium. It’s a learning curve. Hope you feel better! Take care of yourself and come back when you can.

I did the exact same thing recently. I have tried a handful of other gouache brands but just can't get used to working with tubes, it slows me down! It's frustrating to waste paint and hard to rewet later (Specifically I tried W&N, SO HARD TO REWET!) I finally settled on M Graham, got the five color set, mixed some secondaries, let it all dry, and was thrilled with the rewettability. So I then bought another handful of earthtones and some secondary colors and I let all the colors dry in the palette. I just squeeze out fresh white when I need it and I'm very happy with this arrangement. Also I find M Graham generally extremely affordable as I'm located in the US. I just love that company, it's become my primary brand.

I only ever had a tube of white W&N gouache for highlights, but man, it dried hard as a rock on my palette if I didn't wipe it off my palette before letting it dry! I've been much happier with Schmincke, M. Graham, and Mission.

I would also say that instructors/teachers influence the attitude towards gouache as well. My first watercolor class had a section on gouache, it was in the curriculum and the teacher was quite disparaging of it as he was a "fine" artist and considered gouache just for commercial use. This was in the 1980's not that long ago!

I do hope that you will have a healthier year! I have a difficult time with thinking that gouache is a permanent medium. When I was taught to use gouache it was for newspaper and circular ads. The ONLY gouache painting that was “saved” were the comics! I never knew why. The rest were thrown in the trash right after the “photo” plates were made, even the fashion painting plates, once sent on for reproduction they ended up in the trash bin! I like Turner gouache, mostly because of the color selection and I have painted thick and thin either works well if you take care of your surface. Thank you for sharing another amazing art experience with us, you get to the heart of the matter and continually knock our socks off! I am glad that you are able to create your art and videos at this time. Please be careful and get yourself healthy, this is important for your future life as well as your career. Have a lovely day thank you for the wonderful video, you brighten so many peoples days. 😊

I like to do gouache really thickly, just once, with no overlapping. If things weren't opaque enough, the same colour was made, and repainted. It becomes more like colouring in a design. I learnt it this way from a senior colour and design teacher who gave us lots of exercises. Not sure what is right, but it is what people get used to ........ I didn't think you would get a purple from the red and blue in this set. Surprising. Hey Denise, I hope whatever you are going through health wise, that you will come out stronger and healthier soon. I am unwell tonight, so I don't like to be so sick that I can't work, or too tired to write or paint, so I know how it feels. Keep painting, when you feel up for it, even if it isn't for us.... Hello Denise, I think it’s important that you paint the way you want to. People need to realize that art is an expression of you (and themselves separately) and nobody can tell you that you are doing it wrong. That’s old thinking and thankfully that is slowly being removed. As long as you are happy, that’s all that matters. I’d love to see another gouache video where you just lather that paint on! Hope you are doing well❤️

I’ve been playing with gouache a lot lately, and was surprised at how much water I can add and still achieve amazing opacity! I like to call it the melted ice cream consistency, where it spreads so smoothly and still has amazing coverage. There are so many ways to use gouache (any medium, really), and I think unless you’re running into a specific hurdle you’re probably doing it right. I’ve struggled with the mechanics of mixing and keeping a workable palette. It gets so messy so fast. So I understand that sometimes it’s purely the mechanics of a different medium that make it less enjoyable than our comfort zone materials. Thanks for the great video!

Great video, loved the pre mixing colours, never thought of that. I use this set alongside a cheap set 12 for the price of 1 mg. I have the same cracking and they don’t fall out. Tried glycerin which helped slightly. The cheap ones really shrink and crack more. Stick with mg if you got the money. The lovely Rhino looked sad. I know don’t anthropomorphise. Thanks Denise.🇬🇧

I really loved seeing your palette setup and the painting is beautiful! From what I've heard, M Graham is less likely to crack on thicker applications but may result in some shinier spots due to the honey. Lately I've really been enjoying experimenting with gouache using just a tube of Schmincke's white gouache and mixing it with my White Nights watercolors. I have a jelly gouache palette but it's large and not as easy to just pull out and play around with. I have found that I do have more success with the underpainting and thin layers method, but I too am impatient to start building up thicker, more opaque layers 😅

I looooooove m.graham gouache because I love using them with watercolors. They’re beautiful to render once my watercolor layer is set. I’ve been building up my small collection a few tubes at a time and it’s been a joy to get to know the brand that way. With m.graham, I’ve put dots on a ceramic dish and they don’t crumble or crack and rewet beeeeeautifully! If people are keeping it in the studio, I recommend using a sectioned off ceramic something instead of plastic. Loved how you mixed everything! And a beautiful review as always!! So sorry that you’re going through health issues again but please take your time and hoping you’re able to see improvements soon. Biggest positive vibes!!

@@InLiquidColor YES!! I tried to put a few blobs in my airtight palette when I first got them a couple of years ago. SUPER staining reds. They cracked and crumbled so bad as well, which is why I decided to try to put little blobs on the ceramic. Then I noticed that they kept better on my little ceramic daisy plate. Through experimentation....we learn. Personally, I don't think anyone should gatekeep people for figuring out their own journeys with new mediums and proud of you for finding your own way of using them!

For someone who claims to be uncomfortable with gouache, you seem to do a really good job! 5 of the colors I used to find as useful additions to my gouache palette are: alizarin crimson, a true yellow ochre, burnt sienna, magenta and a vivid green. You do a really good job at creating those earth tones, but you might find it easier to use the more glowing actual earth tone. If you want to see some really fun and interesting gouache techniques, you might want to look at the manuscript illustrations from various cultures, particularly old Persian poetry and/or Indian paintings.

I totally understand what you mean with you wish to paint in thick consitence. I love it 🙈😅 I set up colorful highlight over on my watercolor with it

Another lovely video, Denise. Thank you so much. And the painting turned out so cool! Does anybody else fondly remember that one guy from the discovery channel commercial who was so super enthousiastic about African Wild Dogs? As for layering thin to thick, I think it really depends on how many layers you need and what kind of effect you're going for. Starting out relatively thin (but it can still be thicker than watercolour) then moving on to creamier textures should be fine. Especially if you don't mind reactivating the previous layer and/or don't need to work a layer too much. Good luck with your health. I hope everything gets sorted as well as can be, and that you'll be able to rest and relax when you need it. 🧡

Amazing user name btw :) I'm bummed that I don't remember that commercial! Haha. I absolutely love watching more seasoned gouache painters work thin to thick, I'm just not skilled with that technique. Here's to many more paintings though! I'll eventually work it out :)

I totally get the struggle fighting with gouache. I guess it's bec I'm using student grade supplies. It's so tough to use when you're so familiar with watercolors for so long. I hope you feel better soon💖

Great video, I loved the rhinos you did in the schmincke video. Lena Rivo does her gouache paintings with thick paint and no underpainting, she has great videos about it. Hope you recover quickly, don't be too hard on yourself and take all the time you need 💕

I would love to see you paint this in your style. It’s so fun to see the different ways artist use gouache. Either way sorry it was as enjoyable for you but it came out stunning.

Thank you for this review! I have the white gouache from them and I LOVE it because it dries super matt! I really don't like shiny watercolors, and tried a few whites before someone recommended using M. Graham gouache instead! I also have a rube of Schminke PW6 gouache, which is nice, it rewets better but cracks more. I just got their Neutral Grey, which I haven't tried putting in a pan yet, but it's beautiful! 😍

It took me some research to choose M graham for my first gouache set. And it just feels so different from watercolor. It took a while. I wouldn't use a mijello palette. The color stains the plastic so much. I ended up using my glass palette and using fresh paint like acrylics/oils made it easier. I use my mijello palette for washes. And the paint does get moldy if you try to keep them wet, and I use boiled tap water with hydrogen peroxide. Just letting them dry and rewetting is better. I use a plastic brush to poke and move the gouache to get it creamy again. But once dried, (very subtle) they don't apply as opaque. But it's easier to get watercolor like washes and glazing. I have also mixed zinc white with some of my QoR to see if the aquazol had an impact in the gouache. It did make it runnier than expected for some nice thin layers. The titanium won't give you a super white white if you layer on top. I use masking fluid to preserve highlights like snowy mountain peaks. Take care and no worries.

I forgot to audibly mention it in the video, but yes, that red stains like crazy! Ceramic or glass would be much helpful haha.

Yellow + black would be a nice convenience green in your mixes! For muted yellow, I would mix yellow orange and add a touch of blue violet (both colors in between the ones you already have)

I really like getting your thoughts on gouache. I have been wondering which brand I should try and which one could re-wet reliably. I will try M graham out!

I hope your medical issues resolve soon! This was an interesting painting to watch. Sorta feel you fighting the medium. When I watch you watercolour it feels like it's flowing. Here there was some hesitancy and that's interesting that you not only expressed it in the voice over but also in the edits you chose.
