ABOUT ME
Hi! My name is Margot and I am a professional artist and graphic designer. My parents like to joke that I was born with a paintbrush in hand. I started my career after graduating from the renown Parsons School of Design in New York City and spent over 15 years creating and designing for many of the world's top Fortune 500 brands and companies. My painting journey started as a side project and a creative outlet for me to step away from the computer, go back to my "roots" in fine art and to hone my skills as an illustrator and painter. I started posting some of my work on instagram and the rest is history. My work is inspired by all the things that I am passionate about. Ballet, travel, graphic design, color and finding a world of beauty in all facets of everyday life. I hope you'll join me in this RU-vid journey as I take you through all the tips, tricks and trade secrets I've gathered throughout the years. I hope I can teach you some of what I know, help you discover your creative voice and I hope you enjoy this Channel!

Relatively new to watercolors; I liked the idea of honey and did some research, zoning in on M. Graham. I am happy with them and while I have sampled other brands I wanted to learn to use one brand proficiently because most companies formulate their products to be used together. I am commenting here because I live part of the year in India and the "issues" you mentioned are real. I have a small refrigerator for my paints and other personal items affected by heat and humidity. I leave them here when I am gone and they are perfect upon my return. Finally, I enjoy your videos... you are humorous, talented - love your style. This does not keep me coming back; it is that you seem knowledgeable and I appreciate your willingness to share your knowledge in so pleasing a way. Appreciate!

You left out AZO GREEN! You know, that trendy green gold colour all floral artists are using!? (haha I've been watching your videos). Thank you for this video. I only have a couple M Graham, and I love the Gamboge - SO GOOD. And I love the consistency of M Graham and because I live in Australia which is pretty dry, it can travel in a tin and not get too gooey. I need to get the rest of the colours you mention now. Esp Quin Rose! The only colour I have that is a disappointment is it's Olive green. Very opaque and dull.

Thank you, Margot, for this very positive review.

I absolutely love M. Graham and if I had to pick only one brand to work with, it would be them. I am one of those crazy folks that takes my paints backpacking and travelling and have great success doing so. The only colour I so far need to keep studio only is their gorgeous Terra Rosa - which indeed has remained a liquid and not dried down even one bit. Otherwise I just don't fill my palettes super full and it is absolutely fine. The Art ToolKit style are great for this or the thinner plastic palettes. I don't like the airtight ones since they are too bulky and you don't really need em. I don't like the halfpan style palettes since they are bulky and more annoying to pack, plus they don't dry as fast when I want to put them away in my bag. I hate how much I have to scrub to get paint out when I try certain other brands or how they dry up and fall out! The M Graham sure never do that. They do stay pretty sticky, but I just don't normally stick my fingers in my palette wells xD

M. Graham has quickly become one of my favorite brand's along side Daniel Smith! I've personally never had an issue with them not drying in my pans, and live in Canada! M. Graham has become my staple brand for my portrait palette, I love the vibrant, transparent mixes I can achieve without getting muddy dull colours! My favorite colours by them though (so far) are their Cobalt range. They really pack a punch in saturation payoff with the option to showcase the granulation properties or not depending on how much you dilute the paint. The thing I love best about them though is how the paint feels! It's so...rich and creamy to apply to the paper, I've never had that experience with any other brand!

I live in Arizona and love this brand. I paint a lot of desert landscapes, as well as local flora and fauna. You chose a lot of great colors. I was surprised about the Veridian and look forward to testing it out in future portraits! My top 10 favorite M. Graham paints besides most of the quinacridones: quin nickel gold, quin rust, azo green, ultramarine pink, gamboge, perm. Alizarin crimson, cobalt teal, cerulean, terra rose... And my most favorite paynes gray! 🩶 Lastly for the record, I would not be bored by hearing about the sciencey stuff behind the paint. I would find that quite interesting. Thank you for sharing.🎨

Margo this was so awesome! I was given two sets of M. Graham for Christmas and was looking for info on use etc. The fact that you explain WHY you recommend each color instead of just saying "do this" was so helpful. I started out to just make a short list to check against what I had and what I might want and ended up with a whole page of notes on each color. I wish you'd write a notebook page on the M Graham colors you recommended here and all of them! I'm trying to set up a studio pallet and would find this so awesome. At 65 plus I'm just not able put in the research ! I got the Quinacridone set and the desert SW set.

I really Love MGram paints. I had gotten a pallet that is air tight. I live in Florida and if I keep them flat in a drawer they fare well. In this climate I could never do plain air with these paints 🎨 😒. That's OK though. I have a pallet for that and I can co.e back home and do a painting from my small sketch. I've kept these paints in this pallet for 4 years now and haven't had a problem with mold yet. Knock on wood. I love the consistency of MGram they are creamy paint. 😊 They blend really well together and some burst on paper and the brilliantcy never fades. 😊Also if you want to use in plain air you could bring tunes and squeeze a small amount at a time while you paint?? 😉 I never tried it as of yet though. I love how you accentuate the colors! ❤. Thank you 😊. JK FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸

I agree with you, the colors are luminous and pleasant to use. I have my problems with the Sap Green, which is dull and a bit opaque, and the Yellow Ochre, which has a powerful, unpleasant 'iron' smell that's still present even after several months in the air, but the color is nice.

A tip might be to put the paint in your pan or palette space a 1/3 or 1/2 at a time. Let it dry then add more. I don’t need to do that here, but when I’ve lived in more humid climates, it helped.

Margot, thank you so much for your channel. I started with watercolor just some few months ago and I learned so much here already. Very interested in the science stuff of pigments etc. I tried to dry my van Gogh tube paint in the freezer as you recommend, but it took more than a full week and they were still sticky if you touch them slightly. I use the large pans. Just squeezed the pan full of paint and distributed it with a toothpick. Would it be better to layer the color in the pan or is it just the brand that makes them dry so slowly? Greetings from Germany!🙃

What do you do if you have a paint that does end up with mold? Is it useable? Trash? I have a couple of tubes of M. Graham watercolor paints from a subscription art box that I got years ago. I put them in pans, but had a binder separation issue with one. I even tried mixing it in the tube and making a new pan. Neither has dried out. I do live in FL. That could be a problem. But I keep the AC on a setting that most people would need a jacket for. 😂

Lots of watercolor goodness! Going to make a cup to tea, put some gingerbread on a plate, and then I’ll be back. 🥳

@@Pointebrush I’ll gladly share. I gilded the lily and covered the pieces of gingerbread in dark chocolate and sprinkled milk chocolate chips on to the melted dark chocolate. 😋

I had just bought an M. Graham basic set and I’m so glad to see that you like them. I hope to add some of the colors you mentioned here to my basic set. Aa a Filipino, I got a very vivid visualization of Pyrrole Scarlet when you mentioned Manny Pacquiao at 12:12.😂

Great presentation of your favourite colours and so useful as I would love to add to my basic set of five. Terra Rosa and the two blues are probably my favourites from your list. I would also love to see a more scientific or technical video about pigments and lightfastness 😎 (PS I think you once posted a short about your favourite Daniel Smith paints, places 6-10 - did you ever post your top 5?)

M Graham paints have always interested me but they're incredibly expensive here in the UK in comparison to other artist quality brands, so I've never bothered picking any up, although they are 15ml tubes so you get a lot of paint compared to others. It's nice to live vicariously through other peoples' swatching! And yes please to the sciencey stuff!

Margot, I am SO enjoying you Top Ten series! I was wondering if you had ever heard of/ used the A. Gallo watercolours from Italy. I was a dedicated user of both Daniel Smith and Winsor & Newton and used them almost exclusively, until I tried A. Gallo! The smell of rosemary that permeates the air as you awaken your pans with water…soooo yummy! I would love to hear your take on them. Thank you for your wonderful videos! ❤️🇨🇦

I have arthritis in my hands, especially the base of my dominant thumb. Brands like WN and DS dry hard. By the time I’ve reactivated the paint adequately, my thumb is throbbing. Not so with M Graham! Easy to use, almost like being right of the tube. Anyone with hand issues might consider this brand. I use it exclusively. The RU-vid station, Mind of Watercolor, has some great videos on the MG 10 starter colors, all transparent. PS - I totally agree with you about viridian!

If you rewet ehe WN with a spray bottle before painting, and wait a little, they are much more easy to reactivate. I love M Graham too, but here in Germany they are not so easy to find.

.M. Graham have been my favorites for years. I'm past the science part because I already put in my time and M. Graham solve that by being mostly single pigment and mostly excellent lightfast rating. But now I have to go get Terra Rosa. Closest thing I've seen to Potter's Pink which is fugitive.

Potters Pink isn’t fugitive. Could you possibly mean Opera Rose?

Is your top 10 a good pallet of m graham? Or would I be better off trying them with a pre made set?

This is very interesting. I’ll look at them again, though they’re in the overly expensive part of Jackson’s UK site so I’ve been ignoring them. Still, a few to try and mix is a cheaper method.

I live in Florida and they never set up. I cover my palette with a sheet of heavy cardstock to keep them from migrating and store them alone on a shelf. I can’t take them in a folding palette.

One of my favorite brands, except for their Mineral Violet (PV 16), which has inexplicably hardened like a stone, while the rest of the tubes remain fresh and usable.
