It's hard not to watch that run from 99-02 and not think " what the hell happened to this dude". Not to say all his movies since Signs have sucked but he hasn't even come close to making anything that good since then.
Cody i love what you do and you're one of the reasons im making a movie review channel as well. You keep it real and have an amazing and unique perspective one film culture as a whole. You're definitely on my Mt. Rushmore of movie review channels. Never stop being dope and thanks for all your hard work.
Man ive never been so excited for an upload!! Had the worse few days and just as im closing at work i see we have a new video! Thank you for being the highlight of my week
Fun fact about Old: Old was inspired by a graphic novel called Sandcastle by Pierre Oscar Levy. The movie diverges from the comic, like adding in reasons for the beach shenanigans and changing the ending. The children-turned-teens getting pregnant does happen in the graphic novel, but it leads to a more depressing end. I think since he changed the ending completely, he could've definitely just left that scene out. 😅 He also changed the name of the character of Mid-sized Sedan...the character's name in the comic is Amesan. That change was interesting?? 😂
@@greggibson33The water thing always kinda changed my prospective of this movie, since after seeing it years later. The effects don't age that well either
This plot could have been redeemed if a suggestion that the aliens came here out of desperation for our resources (not water though, lol) they took a chance despite the risk, idk.
UNBREAKABLE takes the top spot for me too, and the trilogy as a whole is fantastic. James McAvoy's ability to convey each of his characters to the point you as a viewer can tell exactly which one he is without a word being spoken is astounding. With THE HAPPENING, the opening scenes still hold up for me, especially the construction workers leaping to their deaths, but once you get past that, I am completely with you on it being an out-and-out comedy (of errors).
Yes. It's one of those so bad it's good like Mortal Kombat Annihilation. I mean....if we had trees attacking through sending out some airborne chemical that can make us go batsh!t crazy, we'd burn every fuck!ng tree on the Earth. Or at least most of them as a warning.
Also, you hit the nail on the head. M. Night is a master of using the age old writing technique of asking "what if ______?" And then he uses that to think of ideas that are ridiculously intriguing and original (in an age where originality in Hollywood is almost dead). But he has the same problem that I think Jordan Peele has. Excellent premise, excellent set up, pretty good execution...until the end, where it feels like neither of them know how to resolve the story in a satisfying way. I'd say pretty much every M. Night premise is GREAT, but he only lands the ending maybe 1/3 of the time. I still LOVE him though.
The Last Airbender will always be his worst one because not only he ruined the genuineness of Avatar but he also disappointed his own daughter who is actually a huge fan of the show.
Sorry but I enjoyed OLD. The watching of the couple slowly age and forget each other and die in front of their children who are aging again was a powerful lesson
Old was awesome, I think most people just don't get it. There are a few segments in it which cross into stupid absurdity and the ending is wayyyy too drawn out and expository but aside from that it's much better than it's placement on this list.
If Shyamalan had focused on the ramifications of lost time in Old then he might’ve had something. As it was his bizarre fantasy flop was just awful. Unintentionally silly and yucky. 😖
You have a habit of taking a movie I loved, helping me see it from a different perspective and then in turn not loving that movie as I previously did. While sometimes it sucks, I thank you for helping me broadening my lense and watch movies in a more dissecting light. You’re the man brotha, keep it up
I remember first seeing the preview for Trap in the theater. It looked intriguing. Then it said it was directed M. Night. That took the wind right out of my sails.
So I was 13 when I first saw signs. I was home alone, it was dark, and I was watching it on The family aol Dial-up computer. This was during the time of Napster. Anyway, I will never forget the scene where they see the alien for the first time through the TV. For whatever reason that was the scariest thing I ever saw and it scared the s*** out of me to the point I had to turn on all the lights and still couldn't sleep.
love the Dave Bautista praise! easily the best wrestler turned actor. his scene in blade runner changed a lot of ppls opinion on him i think. would love to see him as a killer/slasher in a thriller or horror movie and see what kind of twisted side he can pull out of himself. something like a silence of the lambs where he can actually showcase his skills and not just be behind a mask or wait until the end to reveal himself
As someone who loves Avatar and it will forever be my favourite comfort show, every time I am reminded of The Last Airbender I get the Kill Bill siren go off 😡🚨 I'll never forgive him for creating that monstrosity of a film
"Unbreakable" has always been my fav of his. The one i feel is underrated is "The Village", true that it could have been better if it stayed in the horror genre, but i think it has an interesting commentary and great visuals.
Love your videos man! Only just found your channel and in the past week I've been through at least 5 of your long tier list & ranking videos. Great content!!
Seeing Bruce Willis at the end of Split was such a bitchin surprise. Not only was Split very good, but I waited years hotly anticipating the secret conclusion of Unbreakable, wondering all the who what when wheres. And then Glass came out and M Night dropped trow and hosed his whole audience down with projectile dookie all the way from Philadelphia. It's still the only film I've seen that made me legitimately angry.
Great list and yesss The Happening is so ridiculously entertaining! Also awesome to see Signs so high on the list. It has been one of my all time favorite films since I was child and even though I must have seen it over 30 times, I would love to see it in a theater. I was 5 when it was released, so missed my chance to see it then. 😁 Maybe by 2028 we could celebrate it's 25th anniversary and bring it back for a re-run? Here's hoping.
I kept wondering where Devil would be on the list, but I remembered you said he produced the movie and hadn’t directed it which I didn’t know was the case but I loved that movie too
@@zoewhiteart7676 His most underrated film and i hate that people put it in the same camp as lady in the water and the happening as the films that made him a bad director
dave bautista was INCREDIBLE in knock at the cabin, the way he was able to control the whole situation with the 2 men and their daughter without even raising his voice or even using his body as a weapon like most big wrestler turned actors would rely on he on the other hand relied on his acting to carry the film and he nailed the role perfectly!
He was no better in that than a mannequin with a tape recorder in its throat. Why are they trying to make this guy a popular actor a-la The Rock? Cabin was a pointless bore-fest at any rate.
Love this list bro, and I was so glad to see your number 1 being Unbreakable because that’s always been bar none the best M night movie ever made to me…it’s a masterpiece
Cody you have to watch sometime the Avatar Cartoon, i know that you aren't the biggest animation fan anymore, but it will be big shame if your only experience of this amazing story is this Trainwreck!
@@matt1372 Mediocre. I don't know why people on here seem to think it's good somehow. To me this director had one good movie and then went on to repeat the same trick with increasingly more predictable, mediocre movies. I stopped following him after signs. That was a horror movie that wasn't scary and had the predictable, unlikely plot twist at the end. I remember stepping out of the cinema feeling extremely underwhelmed. My friends had the same. You also see that he didn't hit anywhere close to an 8 on IMDB since with Ubreakable and Split being a 7.3 and the rest a 6.6 or lower.
@@greggibson33 He made one really good movie. I would say the Sixth Sense is a 9/10. Unbreakable/Split/Glass might be a 7/10. Signs/The Village a 6/10 and the rest lower than that.
There are directors who I completely connect to their vision, and M. Night is one of them. This meaning that most of the flaws that bother other people, don't bother me. Like the one major plot hole in every movie or the awkward humour and dialogue, I don't care. I love the old school thriller vibe Shyamalan has and his take on horror I love. I've loved all of his movies post the Visit except Glass (which was alright). That's just because I completely connect to the vision he has, and I completely can just immerse myself into his movies and not care about the flaws.
Rupert Grint is also in a show on Apple Tv called Servant, which M. Night Shyamalan also happens to be an executive producer of. theres 4 seasons, its actually pretty good too
M nights all for the self shymalan family love, first he had himself basically be the villain in old cause he was watching over them, then he just promoted his daughters music with trap
In the nepotism side of the ranking you should Also include The Last Airbender because for everything that Shymanlan screwed up with his adaptation, i will not blame him for the infamous whitewashing, the two people responsible for that is the girl that played Katara and her billionaire father that forced her into the film since one of the producers owned him a favour, which led them having to cast all the water nation white and Once they realised that their biggest star was Jasper from twilight they knew they had to pick a popular name for the villain Zuko and after the initial choice, Jesse McCartney, dropped Dev Patel took the role and that defined also the ethnicity of the firenation!
Signs is a timeless classic with some of the best dialogue ever delivered in film. I'm actually surprised Shyamalan has not revisited this universe. Perhaps post Glass and a few clunkers he will begin considering it. Not that he should, but it could be epic if the original cast can return.
Sixth Sense number one in my opinion. Like you said, even without the twist is was great. And I agree Toni Collette is just amazing. Signs would be my number 2. And I didn’t love this movie when I first watched it. My kids liked it so I can’t count how many times we watched it. And over time I really began to appreciate it more. Caught so many things the more I watched it (thanks, kids!).
M Night Shyamalan is one of my top ten favorite directors of all time and as an aspiring business owner and actress I hope to work with him one day in the near future. My top five favorite movies from him are The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, Signs, Split and Glass. My honorable mentions are Old, Knock at the Cabin and Trap. This was another good movie ranking video and analysis Cody. ❤❤❤❤🎬🎥🎟️🎞️🍿🥤
I didn't realize how many I havent seen! So I'll have to get on that ASAP. I just saw Trap this weekend and while some people have valid points on why they disliked it, I have also seen some really stupid reasons they didnt like it (he didnt kill anyone in the movie, why was he/how did he become a serial killer, etc.). Anyway I took it at face value and I think thats why I enjoyed it more than others. Signs is still my number one! Followed very closely by Unbreakable.
Thanks for the upload, Cody, especially with several people targeting you online. (Hope the trolling dies down.) Here’s how I’d rank M. Night Shyamalan’s films that he directed from best to worst: 1. ‘The Sixth Sense’ 2. ‘Unbreakable’ 3. ‘Signs’ 4. ‘Split’ 5. ‘The Village’ 6. The Visit’ 7. ‘Trap’ 8. ‘Glass’ 9. ‘Knock at the Cabin’ 10. ‘Wide Awake’ 11. ‘Lady in the Water’ 12. ‘Praying with Anger’ 13. ‘Old’ 14. ‘The Happening’ 15. ‘After Earth’ 16. ‘The Last Airbender’
I haven’t seen 4 of the movies on this list, so here’s my ranking of 11 films: Split, Unbreakable, The Sixth Sense, Glass, The Happening, Signs, Old, The Visit, Knock at the Cabin, Trap, and The Village. The four I haven’t seen are pretty much all considered the worst, so I don’t think I’m missing out on much 🙃😂
Epic, deep, philosophical: 1 Unbreakable, 2 The Village, 3 Sixth Sense, 4 Signs, 5 Glass, 6 Split, 7 Lady in the Water. Fun, light-weight, punchy: 8 Old, 9 The Visit, 10 Trap, 11 Devil, 12 Knock at the Cabin, 13 The Happening. Mis-fires: 14 The Last Airbender, 15 After Earth.
I've never seen Wide Awake, The Last Airbender, After Earth, or Glass (though I'm interested in the latter film). Kinda wondering if I should put myself through these just so I can do a proper ranking. Judging by how few of his other films I actually like, I'm not so sure.
Those first three movies are so far and above better than the rest because they are a themed trilogy.. the "dead" trilogy. In SIGNS, you have a man who is spiritually dead. In UNBREAKABLE, you have a man who is emotionally dead. And in THE SIXTH SENSE, a man who is literally dead. I think M.Night was being very careful with those first three. I think after that he struggled to really tap into such great themes. The exception being SPLIT, which was the flip side of the coin from UNBREAKABLE.
I put Lady in the Water higher on my list purely because of the OST. I'm such a slut for good OSTs and James Newton Howard knocks out all of Shyamalama's movies Edit: Also I feel like The Village suffers from mismarketing. It's like how they marketed David Cronenberg's Spider - it's not the same genre of movie as their other works so people are like "wait what" when they see The Village and it turns out not to be a subtle horror
I liked Knock at the Cabin, but I felt that the film should’ve ended with the shot of the Cabin on fire, leaving it ambiguous as to whether the world was ending or not. But because they continued revealing everything they were saying was true, was a lot lest interesting.
I think my favorites will always be those first 4 big ones. Yes, I even dig The Village quite a bit. My ranking would go Signs, The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable & then The Village.
My M. Night Shyamalan Movies Ranking: 1. Unbreakable (2000) 10/10 2. The Sixth Sense (1999) 10/10 3. Signs (2002) 10/10 4. Split (2017) 10/10 5. Glass (2019) 10/10 6. The Visit (2015) 10/10 7. Knock at the Cabin (2023) 10/10 8. The Happening (2008) 10/10 9. The Village (2004) 8/10 10. Wide Awake (1998) 8/10 11. Old (2021) 7/10 12. Trap (2024) 7/10 13. Lady in the Water (2006) 5/10 14. After Earth (2013) 1/10 15. The Last Airbender (2010) 1/10
I was legit watching this, and at 20 minutes in I was thinking, “Oh no, Cody forgot about The Happening.” Wasn’t expecting it to be that high on the list. 😂
Now rank the movies based solely on their concepts. His strong suit is coming up with cool ideas. Regardless of the execution, which do you think are the most interesting?
It was so frustrating in The Village that the monsters were revealed BEFORE she goes into the woods. The forest scene lost all tension after that! A simple switch of scenes would have made a big difference.
25:37 Dude, no need to apologize. I... kinda don't wanna admit it.... But I LOVE "Verotica" 😅. Like unironically! For the same reasons. I get a kick out of it and laugh my ass off every time.... 🤭
Old was good "I liked it" I was the same as you excited for M Night after Split and Glass, and he's been doing good. I hated the visit, but I hate found footage nonsense. But old is good, Trap is awesome, and the Watchers was good. M Night rarely makes "the best movie ever" but he takes big swings and sometimes misses, and sometimes hits it out the park, but a lot of times they are good concepts. IDK how you didn't like "Trap" either you say m Night quirky dialog and direction hurt it, but literally that is in every one of his movies. He has a certain style that is quickly recognizable like Tarantino, it's unique and recognizable, so I'm not sure what you were expecting with Trap that you didn't get. I thought it was really good, and I also love hardnett and wish he didn't step away when he did, and I hope he gets back into acting.
