I clearly remember being excited beyond belief when my classmates and I found out Anthrax were the support act for Metallica on the Master of Puppets tour, and my god what a time to be alive- what a gig, we had never seen the likes of Anthrax before and all became converts overnight, and this is the point: naturally we found SOD. Once you heard it, you were hooked, the goofiness and the extremity, plus all the raw attack, it was amazing. Given many of us in Birmingham were very into the punk/anarcho punk/crust at that time, SOD slotted in really well as tonally they were close to the stuff we loved outside the metal scene. Plus they were FUNNY. Speak English or Die left you with a smile on your face in a way that MOD never could reproduce, it was an album that captured a moment in time and revelled in it. MOD seemed like a joke that wasn't as amusing on the retelling, and -at least for me - was way to polished and riffy by comparison : it just sounded like just another American hardcore/crossover band. So for me, SOD every time.

It's a tough choice. I have a deeper more important history involving SOD. The only riff I knew when I got my first bass in 1990 was the intro to Milk. I played it reluctantly in the Steve's Quality Music Store in Danvers. But When I first started working for my family the radio always had MOD on via my cousin Chuck. Really pissed my father off who wanted big band music on. Some cab calloway or whatever. The 3 younger house painters would out vote him. Thrash is the best house painting music for sure. Also early grind and mince obviously too. I'm fucking high as fuck. My ears a ringing. I just played a show with Tree. The Spandex Enormity might be the edge. Billy sucks irl tho. I'm glad the crossover is over today. It would be the worst if it was born in 2023. Keep letting the kids know why metal sucks today. Aside from my kid sisters band. They're called The Lousy out of Boston.

Let’s not forget SOD started as a joke, fun band to burn up extra studio time. MOD had a lot more intention.effort and material. There was a recording before SOD, done on a boombox(?) I remember they used a kitchen table for drums, vocals were screamed into the little mic on the boom box. I was so blown away by FFOM and Anthrax at the time, I didn’t really care and kept asking Scott about his gear and getting a heavy sound like his.

I think I have listened to Speak English or Die more than any other album (Reign in Blood is up there). ...EVERYTHING about it is Classic. Like Reign in Blood, it is one of those albums you could put on repeat, and listen to 100 times in a row, and every time you'd still get into it. ...as for the rest of the bands catalogue, besides Live in Budakan, it's all pretty terrible, besides like three songs. ...as for M.O.D., the first album is great; but surely not on quite the same level as S.O.D. SEOD. ...as for the rest of the catalogue, it really never did much for me. ...just seemed too goofy. ...I do wish I could've seen the band from the first album when they toured a few years back, but, for better or worse, I missed it. ...anyway, as to which one is better. Well, like any kind of art; whatever one the listener thinks is better. (aka "beauty is in the eye of the beholder.") ...and, as has been said many times before, one's opinion about this is almost always inspired by how and when they heard the music. ...I was 15 when S.O.D. came out, and it blew all of us away. Two years later when the M.O.D. album came out, we liked it, but was a little let down. ...but someone who heard M.O.D. first could have a totally different opinion on this; as they may not understand just how profound S.O.D.'s effect on "underground music" was. ...it almost single-handedly championed and brought exposure to the sub genre of "crossover"; which bands like The Accused, Cryptic Slaughter, Wehrmacht, D.R.I., Agnostic Front, etc had been doing around the same time; and really lent to the merging of punk/hardcore and "Metal"/"Thrash". ...anyway, to each their own. "Both" (*first Lps) are Great. The one being greater than the other; and after that, in my humble opinion, both bands lost their way. ...with this said, I have no desire to see S.O.D. Live, unless just played first LP. And same for M.O.D., if had Tim McMurtrie on guitar. All the Best.

Hi. Cool Vid. I gotta say S.O.D. and it's not close. M.O.D. was just a rehashed version with alot of Anthrax/S.O.D. type rip off riffs that sounded like outtakes Billy stole from the 4 track Anthrax used to record their classic albums. S.O.D. was also recorded in next to no time at all and for the most part, on the fly. It was blatant that Billy saw this as his cash cow and tried to "milk" it everyway he could. As for the other guys in S.O.D., it was kind of a "one off" with very little outside of a few gigs here and there till Anthrax took a dive and in a bit of irony, they decided to go back to S.O.D. for a bit to make some nostalgia cash, so to speak. The mascot was a rip off too. There's only one and that's Sergeant D. Track 3 ( I won't say the name cause I'll probably get deleted in these sensitive times lol) was the best. Screamin that song in the pit when they played Coney Island high was unforgettable. Hell, the first 5 tracks alone piss all over the entire M.O.D. catalog. Originators over imitators every time........

Ignoring the politico-social ramifications of both incarnations of (let's face it) Billy Milano's bands, here we are. M.O.D. was somewhat more technically proficient than S.O.D. - Chuck Schuldiner and Death, as well as Necrophagia (yeah I know, 1987), were pushing Metal to new-found, technically proficient heights. Possessed was turning insanity into music. If you were around in the early and mid-Eighties, and you liked heavy music, you were consuming everything that even remotely sounded like Zeppelin, Sabbath, Maiden, and the rest. D.R.I., FEAR, The Fall, Voivod, Destruction, Kreator, Sodom, All those bands that sounded weird but held your interest - where the wild things are, right? Anyway - I was at the "Live at Budokan" taping and you can see me in the last few minutes of the show at "The New Ritz" (former Studio 54) dead center of the screen as they pan around the crowd. Tall white-guy with hair in a pony tail. I think I had 2 broken ribs after that show. I'll always prefer S.O.D. to M.O.D. because of that show. Billy Milano jumped on my head (go watch the intro to Live at Budokan) and I survived! Anyway - Just sharing my experience. There was also a massive street-fight afterwards between metalheads and hardcore purists. I lost a lot of hair that night!
