this is very neat, definitely some good ideas for when you go camping.

I made some 'home built' MREs a few years ago. I didn't put anything in bowls in them so I could vacuum seal the package. I built mine with breakfast, lunch and dinner in one package I picked up a couple of thise grease pots at DG a couple of months back with the same thought as you had and have been playing with them. One thing to be aware of is that the pot, by itself, is not a quart. In order for it to hold a full quart you have to put the strainer top on and fill it to that ridge inside the strainer. Without the top on if you fill it right to the rim it is about 3 3/4; cups and really about 3 cups or so is about what it will comfortably hold without worrying about spilling. I still think it is nice, though. I am going to try heating soup or something un the pot with the strainer/lid on and see if I can steam some veggies at the same time. I used the pot to boil eggs to see how many it would hold - I did 1/2 dozen that were labeled 'large' eggs. Your comment about how there might be a DG in those woods cracked me up. They really are springing up everywhere lately.

That oil storage container is gold. You can use it for straining, steaming, or add some cloth it's a water pre-filter and boiling device. Well spotted!

Great little video. Thought the stainless steel pot/mug was a great find. Only criticisms of your home made MRE are; 1. No Toilet Paper/tissues 2. No tea or coffee, milk, sugar.

I've done similar with stuff from Walmart. Instant potatoes, cup of soup, oatmeal, single serve of just add water stuff make great trail rations. Awesome ideas. And that dallor tree pot is a good find

I live in central Pennsylvania and we have a Dollar General in the middle of nowhere. The only things nearby are some farms and a rock quarry. It is the biggest DG I have ever seen and is quite popular with the Amish folks. I have made my own mre's to keep in my get home bag.

I was recently in my local Dollar general and a new product they had in stock was a bag of meatballs and pasta sauce. So if you grab some of your favorite noodles you could have yourself a spaghetti dinner on the trail.

Excellent info. I saw this other fella do the same, but he used gorilla tape on his ziploc bags to make them more durable and reusable. He also put a piece of jute twine as the opening tab, helping with a firemaking element.

Great assortment but i would humbly and kindly add that these foods are all very thirst provoking and in a bug out situation, water will be at a premium.

Got one of those big steel cups. I make coffee with it. Cook out of it and purify water in it. The lid and a coffee filter makes some good java.

Wow, I haven't seen this park since I was a Kid I used to spend my summers in Prophetstown when I was younger... My grandparents lived about a block away on E.2nd street. Great ideas on Dollar General MRE's too !

Been looking at that same little pot now im going to have to get one. In my area ( not sure about yours ) DG has spaghetti sauce w/meatballs. A little more expensive but still cheaper than mre's. Another good option thanks for the video.

Never figured out why products that are necessary every month aren't bought ahead of time. I mistakenly asked that one time, and I quickly learned not to ask that. I never found out, so I guess I'll go to the grave not knowing. But I'll never ask again 😂

Take only photohgraghs and leave only footprints. It's not rocket science.

Don't forget packet soup mixes are great meal breaks & can be added to ANY meal - have added vegetable, soup, tomato & chicken soup. These are packable to go flat so great in flat packs or MREs. 1 thing to consider are drink additives. I have used Jelly packets (Jello in USA) for a sugar fixes. So many different things in packets you can think of. Recently I added some fruit mixes & hard boiled lollies (hard candy in USA). I also ensure that at each MRE has at least a spoon in the pouch & a lighter. I do divide my matches into each pack with a strip of striker too. Just in case you need to move them into pockets or another bag. Raisin or Sultanas are great snack food on the go as you move.

Well let’s be realistic here. As a guy, you can’t walk into a Dollar General and only buy tampons. You gotta add a bunch of other shit to the basket and kinda hide the tampons in the middle like everything is normal. Good video! Yeah, MRE’s are expensive as f***.
