Now that the iPad Air uses the 2nd generation Apple pencil it's hard to see the differences between the Air and the iPad pro. But now the Pro has that super powered M1 chip we have seen in the Macbooks and iMacs. The 12.9" Pro also has the Liquid Retina XDR display that uses mini LEDs in the screen. Does that make it that much better than the iPad air?

Also keep in mind the base iPad Air only has 64 gigs of storage while the Pro has 128. There's no 128 gig Air and the 256 gig + pencil goes for 880$ for but for 930$ you can get the 11' iPad pro and the Apple pencil. I feel the better specs are worth the extra 50$

I recently got myself the ipad air 4 gen, upgraded from the ipad air 3. The main reasons was for the usb c port and the apple pencil changes. Software wise nothing has changed from one to the other. I did consider getting myself an ipad pro 11 gen but after some thought what was being offered Face ID 120hz screen lidar and is nice no doubt but to me they're more like sprinkles. They're not really needed for the drawing experience unless you're using your ipad for more like gaming. Also the air has sweet colours. The blue was nice in store.

As much as i love my mini, there are plenty of times where i say “Damn if only i had a bit more space” granted i can crop it down to fit, and zoom back in when need be, but to have the extra screen real estate is a big help. On the flip side, the mini has helped train me to better utilize my space on a smaller screen, something ive struggled with for a long time. And the portability is unreal. I can literally put it in my pocket and go.

Don't forget storage size! The $599 iPad Air is 64GB and it skips to 256GB which is $750. I would rather pay another $50 for the 11inch iPad Pro 128GB instead as it has enough space and better features than that of the iPad Air 256GB. Update: Keep on the lookout for sales or holidays. I just saw the Air 256GB go for $549 where I live. They were out of stock when I found out sadly.

I’ve been trying to look out for a normal use case scenario for my basic needs and wanted a comparison between the iPad Air and the 2021 11” iPad Pro, even though from a non-artistic perspective. Fantastic review. Thank you sir, finally a video that gave me confidence about choice for my first apple pencil compatible ipad. My main concern was that Air has a gap between pencil and screen below vs the Pro models. I tried the 8-gen at BestBuy and was really surprised how that doesnt really bother me. Some people can tell 60 and 120 HZ apart easily, some can't. Go to a store and experience a high refresh rate display (iPad pro or the many Android devices) for yourself if/when it's safe.

Yep also temper expectations. Everyone on the internet always act like high refresh rate is a life-changing event you can never go back from and this led to my initial experience with it to be very underwhelming. I can very easily switch between my iphone 11 and ipad pro. The jump in frame rate is noticeable but it is in no way massive.

As someone with a 120Hz phone and 60Hz iPad, you can see the difference, but it doesn't really impact anything. Unless you're playing high velocity video games, you won't benefit from it much. It's nice to be sure, but not a killer app feature.

The only issue I was running into is limited number of layers (30 at the res I'm using but then I'm also very confused where everything is) and I wish I was able to work with a bit higher resolution. Great video! I'm definitely not the artist in the family, but my son loves drawing in Procreate, and he's getting pretty good! He's had the iPad Air 3 with first-gen Apple Pencil for the past couple of years, and I was wondering if the iPad Air 4 would be a worthy upgrade for his birthday next week. But he actually balked at the lack of a home button, since he's so used to having one! And since the iPad Air 3 has very similar specs to the iPad 8th Gen, sounds like he can get quite a bit more use out of it. I did want to give a quick shout-out to the iPad Mini, though. It's been a while since it was refreshed, but it's still rocking the same A12 Bionic and 3 GB of RAM as the iPad Air 3 and iPad 8th Gen, plus it has a fully laminated display with P3 wide color and a whopping 326 ppi resolution, and comes with 64 GB in the base model for $399. Here's hoping Apple gives it a design makeover and a spec bump to the A14 in the coming months to keep it aligned with the iPad Air (as has been their custom in the past), but for those wanting a super portable tablet for quick sketches, it's still worth considering.

5:18 I went to BestBuy to test the sky blue iPad Air 4 in person. For additional reference, here's the layer limits I found for other canvas sizes in Procreate... 3500 x 2625 (over 3K): max of 54 layers 4096 x 2160 (standard for 4K movies): max of 56 layers 4500 x 3375 (higher than standard 4K): max of 31 layers 4900 x 6000: max of 14 layers I set the DPI to 300 also which is really good for printing your work, and it had no affect on the layer limit. Hope this helps even more 😄
@k3nny111
@k3nny111 2 года назад
DPI wouldn't impact performance; it's not a thing in digital spaces, and only describes the translation of digital to physical media. DPI is the density by which pixels are translated to printed media; 1920x1080 could be thousands of DPI when printed on a tiny area.

have you noticed blooming in procreate on the m1 12.9 inch?

I just upgraded to the 12.9" iPad. I'm trying to decide if I should give my mom my 11" iPad pro 2020 or just get her and Air? I have to say I much prefer the fingerprint sensor to faceID. I wish the Pro had that option. BTW, 2nd gen Apple Pencils are now $199!

60hz refresh rate is really hard to go back to once you are used to higher refresh rates. For example i have 120hz screen on my phone and 165 on the computer and i had no reason to pay extra for the pro but i just decided to go for it just because of the screen

Hey Brad, have you done a video on creator peripherals for the ipad? I use CSP on both Mac and the ipad pro, and while I vastly prefer the drawing experience on the ipad, my dependency on those keyboard-style shortcuts has me doing the serious illustration work on my cintiq/mac setup. Are there any macropads or programmable controllers compatible with the iPad that you'd recommend?

That's a great question and might be worth exploring in a future video. Off the top of my head I don't know what shortcut dohicky would work on an iPad. Any Bluetooth keyboard could be attached an kept off to the side.

I tried some of the controllers, I don’t like them there too small you have to relearn the buttons, they feel like tv remotes. Just get a good quality Bluetooth keyboard. A keyboard lays flat . More keys , you know your keyboard and can be used with other apps other devices.

i have a ipad pro and a ipad air (2nd generation), i really like both ipads, thought i cant use the apple pencil on my air as its a older generation, and the ipad air really lasts long my ipad air is older than 5 years and started only this year to lag a bit (unexspected re-starts/crashes) but else i really like the ipad air for gaming and drawing even if i draw mostly on my ipad pro!

uhmmm I think that miniled panel doesnt work with procreate. The app should support that feature like Netflix with HDR or similar, otherwise, the panel works like the old ipad pro, "full white backlight". Anyone know if i'm wrong??

I have a question: Does the new screen matters if all you're going to do is draw in procreate? I.e. does procreate uses HDR?

9:22 if i were to use a glass screen protector, would it create a gap too? And is it noticable?

5-2021 I have the iPad 6th gen. with Apple Pencil. And my 6th gen meets all my digital hobby needs. The 8th gen. iPad would be a major upgrade for me. But I don't plan on upgrading from my 6th gen. until it is no longer supported. :)

The fact that you like to draw Jak and Link makes me think we have more or less the same taste in games! I think I've also seen you drawing Pokémon and Animal Crossing (but I'm not sure). If so then maybe the only one missing for me is a Spyro drawing

Ram has always been one area I have hammered apple for. Both on the desktop, and in their mobile devices. It's nice to see them up their game and offer 16GB. Not enough to convert me from Android, but at the very least it might push the android makers to up their game in response. Would love to see the Tab S8+ have a 16GB option.

Ram is not as significant on the iPad as it much better optimised. Ram is no where near a bigger issue.I have the s21 and the phone uses over 4 gab doing nothing so effectively 50% gone without running nothing where apple can still run well with 4gb and I have a 2gb mini and it also runs pretty good

Im worried air 4 cant satisfy my need for layers.. since i use lots of layers it sometimes even lags on laptop. But many reviews said air 4 is fine and i dont need to waste extra money for pro which can only use like 5gb ram at max. Im so confused 😔
