Pro Res is a super uncompressed type of video file that runs pretty easily on most half decent computers (not that exciting to talk about).... so I am STOKED that a macbook air can handle that hefty A7S III footage... just wish it was in premiere 😭😭😭😭(good job resolve & obviously final cut)

I'm an incoming college student who plans to do some creative stuff on the side, and air vs pro has been my dilemma, and even more so when M1 came into the equation. This video helped clear things up, thank you!

Not only for privacy concerns but also for performance issues: nobody should be using Google Chrome. Firefox is much better and safer. Regarding edition tools: have you tried VN? I use it in muy iPhone mainly for Instagram and it’s wonderful. Top performance without all the hassles of the usual suspects

Apple is a competitor to Adobe in the software space too (e.g. Final Cut Pro) so there is a vested interest in getting their own apps working great and not going out of their way to help competitors. Over time Adobe will release "new native" apps that will perform better.

I still have my old 8 year old mac mini and mac book air. Can't wait for M2 !!!!

Thank you! I’m a MacBook Pro user but I don’t do a lot of video work anymore so thinking about switching to an Air. Not sure if the 16GB vs 8GB would make a difference on the air though with all the optimization on the M1. Would love to hear your thoughs.

Thanks for the video, I think it's the best one I've seen on the M1 daily use performance so far. It's very cool that they brought so much power into this machine and solved the intel heat issue. I was eyeing Air 2020 Intel when it came out, but the fact that if I change my use scenario to something even a tad heavier, it would flip me off, drove me away. Now it is somewhat versatile yet light and compact machine! Also the pricing is insane. In Europe if you want to get a Windows laptop with good display, keyboard and touchpad, prices start at the same level, but now I can get a Mac with a powerful CPU, 16 Gb RAM and much better OS, not paying extras for MBP and Touchbar penalty (idk why but I just don't like it) if I want to do more than just browsing. Once the transition is fully complete, I think there won't be a reason to pick a Windows laptop in this price rage, unless your are a corp or a a gamer (perhaps that may change too).

Here’s an argument, if you’re on a 13” device why are you trying to use full 4K res playback in premiere. Just go down to 50% quality and it will playback pretty smoothly. The size of the playback window is closer to 720p

Do you use InDesign, Illustrator, or Painter? How's their performance? Also, another friend said they couldn't get Acrobat Pro or Acrobat Reader to install-have you had better luck?

Chrome just today released an update with full native support for Apple Silicon.

Premiere is just slow regardless, it seems. I have the impression that inefficient apps like that create an artificial demand for high end hardware. Meanwhile there are optimized counterparts out there.

This is one of the only reviews out there that is honest and realistic. I can't believe none of the big reviewers mentioned the problems/lag in chrome. That would literally be the first thing I do: install chrome. I mean do they all use safari or did they not try to install it,..? They also all say premiere in Rosetta is buttery smooth, but it obviously isn't. I understand you had super specific compressed footage but still looked way too slow.

Pretty impressive. I think I'll wait a year or so until all my audio apps are updated and my audio interface is supported before I seriously consider upgrading from a maxed out 16inch macbook to a smaller air with no fan! Crazy to think that they will have similar performance!

This is actually really impressive... especially considering it's an Air I bet when Creative Cloud is optimized it's gonna be super fast

My bad... The Intel site for ThunderBolt 3 was not updated to show the USB4 specification was released on 29 August 2019 by USB Implementers Forum, based on the Thunderbolt 3 protocol specification. Still feel that feel Apple needs to change spec page for Mac M1 products to read "ThunderBolt 3/USB4" for the ports as it is the ThunderBolt 3 part that is backward compatible with the new USB4 standard.

I was wondering if you could do a quick update later on after Premiere has been optimized to work with the M1, and maybe compare it to the Macbook Pro's performance with handling Premiere? Should I go for a specced out M1 Macbook Air or an M1 Macbook Pro 13" if my main goal is to do some editing on Premiere? Or maybe you could just do a long-term review later next year after everything works with M1! I just like to see creators follow up on the products they review and let the viewers know if there are any major changes! Keep doing what you're doing :)

Is it worth to go with the base model of MacBook Pro - Apple M1 Chip - 8GB RAM & 256GB SSD. I am not that heavy laptop users and don't perform multi-task. The only heavy application I might use is Adobe Lightroom for photo edit. Other than that, its regular web browsing, watching RU-vid videos, checking emails.

I think the final cut pro example at the end shows what the future of apple silicon could look like. From what I've seen the render time is slower compared to mbp 16 but when the apple silicon gets to a computer that's more thermally capable and has a dedicated gpu, O.M.G

I love Chrome but it's really slow so I switched from Chrome to Brave which is Chrome but better. You can give it a try 😉

I have a question you might not answer. Does it come with creative cloud? Because creative cloud is like 80$ a month and I need it for 3 years of school. So if a MacBook comes with creative cloud I’ll just get one of those instead.

This video showed me exactly what I needed to see. I am planning on buying a 16 inch MacBook Pro for Christmas. So, I know now that I can easily just go ahead with my purchase and upgrade in a few years after Apple works out the kinks and offers M1 in the 16-inch. Also, hi Sara! We have the same first name!

This will be my first time buying a mac and I'm low key freaking out. In addition to everyday use, I will be using it to learn sketchup, indesign and photoshop. Also plan on keeping it for several years. Basically until it dies. lol What configuration would you recommend?

The reason why Chrome is so fast is because it uses so much ram for your convenience, 16GB of unified memory is not enough for this machine. I would wait for a 32gb version. But Apple is probably trying to get people away from chrome and force them to integrate with safari before they release the 32gb version that way people have already gotten comfortable in the switch so they'll be less likely to switch back.

iOS 14.3 beta 2 lets you run shortcuts from the home screen without launching the Shortcuts app :D I have the same gripe as you showed in the review.

Chrome has a version for M1 now!

Mac mini. For a start. let customers know that when buying a Mac with an M1 chip, tell them beforehand that they need a WIRED KB and mouse to get the machine up and running. Secondly, plain instructions telling the customer to plug in their wired KB and mouse instead of looking at two lines and tiny green spot. It took me over an hour to work out what it was. Apple has now taken the minimalist view to the extreme and it is frustrating. Not everybody is intuitive. As to the main problem? I was unable to install Rosetta. It told me that installing Rosetta on this Mac was not possible. So that meant four of the Apps that I use on a daily basis would not work. So, after eleven hours, two conversations with Apple, I gave up and it's being returned to the store.

Hey Sara, that wasn’t a bug in DaVinci resolve Just enable that V1 Button near timeline bottom left side & you’re good to go! You had only enables A1 Audio button so it was importing only audio version. Thanks.

Can you please do an update or a quick video of using Lightroom but going from edit to full screen in develop module? On my 2015 macbook pro, it would take 4-5 seconds to render a photo i'm editing in full screen. I really hate that, and am looking to avoid the same thing again in my next comp. Also, did you find the air overheating at all or slowing down with you running chrome, photoshop, lightroom, and video editing? Or did you not run all of those at the same time?

Is it possible to use all these softwares for normal daily use for a few hours a day ( 4 to 5 hours ) on 8gb ram with 512 ssd? Answer please 🙏. Thanks

Can not wait until update/upgrade Apple M? iMac Retina 5K, 27-inch ( or whatever big size ). In the age of COVID19 being "Person at Risk" only time I get out is to get food. Doctor's appointments have even moved to virtual over the Internet. To tell you the truth since the larger iPhone's I stopped taking a laptop to Starbucks as my iPhone would do everything I needed it to do. If I both still went to Starbucks, was still working in the profession production world, I would purchase the new Apple M1 13 inch MacBook Pro in a heartbeat.

I think Dave Lee was saying PPro ran buttery smooth with 8k RAW at half res, what’s the difference that made it work so bad for you? Just the lower resolution?

All I care about is Logic Pro X, I just need someone who often mixes and records audio to tell me how the M1 handles LPX.

I need a new macbook for college and I'm a design major so I NEED adobe. I canceled my order for the M1 macbook pro because with the new M1 chip I didn't know if it'll run all the things I need to run or even worse if those specific programs I need will even be available on the M1 yet. Do you guys think I made the right decision?
