Hi. An idea came up, but I don't know if you have the time to do it. Can you install hackintosh on the xps and retry the benches? Wonder how much window is keeping back the xps.
@@vladmihai306 he tried hackintosh on a threadripper pc, and he could barely do anything In fact he spent more time troubleshooting than actually using it, so his experience was terrible, and likely would be too, plus it is illegal
haha its wild, but I'm happy to have more competition (increasing the Macs value proposition might make more people who didnt consider Macs before give them a chance)
@@SamAlexanderRU-vid I am happy that more people are buying these base model Macbooks. They will probably upgrade in a few years and I can get these things used for 1/2 price.
its only a good deal when you stick to 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD. When you try to upgrade the macbook to 16GB RAM and a 1 or 2TB SSD the Macbook becomes really expensive
@@Askellad101 Yeah, I agree. But there is some reviews complaining about the base models 720p webcam as well. I mean, there are Windows laptop in this price range that outperforms this webcam? If so it outperforms significantly or just marginally? Because these reviews makes me think Windows laptops are far beyond Macbooks in webcam department.
@@mdateeque3997 yeah but that’s only if you’re comparing them to PC’s. When you compare them to an iPhone or iPad front facing camera they’re really bad. The next generation of MacBooks will probably have similar cameras to the current iPhones, and that’s going to be a MASSIVE improvement.
It makes sense, the high efficiency cores use less than 2W combined at peak, so it will outperform a previous-gen macbook air while still using about the same amount of power as an iPhone, from a much larger battery than an iPhone.
Can someone explain to me, when I look at my screen time, it is always full. Even when it’s like 4am to 8am when I am asleep, it shows safari and other apps as filling up the screen time hours bars. It’s so weird so in the end, everyday I have like 19 hours of screen time which doesn’t make any sense?? I have a lot of safari tabs open because I never quit safari when I close my Mac.
@@matthewhaddock6458 Lol because you’re not buying a portable machine, you’re buying a desktop in a laptop form factor, right? It’s not like you’re only losing multithreaded performance when on battery, you lose a little bit of your single threaded perf. as well, which matters in almost everything an average person does on their laptop in daily life.
The mic and camera is a game changer as we shift to virtual meetings over Zoom. I own MacOS and Windows laptops as well as a PC. All for work. I use the Mac mainly due to better mic and camera quality. Also, the fan noise from my windows laptop makes a lot of noisy background in my mic.
That is actually correct. I love to compare things myself and it's like a channel made for me (or could have been made by me). Love your videos, you have my greatest thanks for work you're doing.
Same, got an xps 13 and while it looks slimmed down and nice it's been nothing but trouble. Had to change the battery once first year and then right away again 9 months later. I'm on my third fan as well. The speakers has stopped working (hardware-wise) and same with the fingerprint reader. My least favourite laptop to date.
Guys, don’t buy dell or hp laptops costing above 1k. My xps 13’s fan failed after 2 years. And now after the october windows update, the laptop mic is not working 😑. Meanwhile my old 2013 MacBook Air runs perfectly( albeit quite slow cuz it’s old).
Man it’s so crazy that it’s the first time that Apple released a CPU for a laptop and it’s already killing AMD and intel!! Which they have been doing this for DECADES!! 😳😳😳😮😮😮
For the price of the Mac you could buy a pc that has 16 cores 32 threads and a 3060 to for a gpu and a 1000 watt power supply with 16 gb of ram and a good motherboard you could literally buy a beast of a pc for 2399 Dollars
@@foolpersona_ Windows is horrible with touch even on a surface pro. That's definitely not a selling point especially when the screen has half as many pixels as the Mac.
The fact that this exact chip is in a fan-less Macbook Air with almost identical performance is insane, I know it's being compared to a cost to cost Windows laptop, but that thing has a High end quad-code i7 in it, the M1 is apples equivalent of a dual-core i5 and its smoking it. And then if we take performance out of it, the battery, screen, webcam, speakers, mics, keyboard, build quality etc is all better, i'm amazed
This is an awesome review man! One of the most informative and in-depth reviews I have ever seen. Something that is really interesting about the RAM test is the factor of different operating systems. Windows 10 is known to have an incredible amount of bloatware which really slows the computer down, whereas mac OS is typically crisper and lighter. That being said, they are both incredibly beautiful machines and I wonder how they would both perform with the same OS such us flashing Ubuntu onto them.
Max thanks for finally doing the LRC 1:1 preview build test. It would be really helpful if you can do this same test again comparing the 16” MBP and the 13” M1 MBP
Congrats to 500k!! you’re killing it over the past few months, great videos and you definitely deserved it! Now I just need the same growth on my own small channel I started recently🤪
And yet it is still unfair with the Mac. It is unplugged the whole time! I know Max said Mac performs the same, plugged or not. Laptops were meant to be mobile. If the Dell was unplugged, OMG! I'm sobbing for Dell and the rest of the intel family
I was thinking about starting a RU-vid channel that would cover all the performance metrics other channels constantly leave you but after watching you're videos I feel I no longer need to do that. You're videos are on point. These are the kind of reviews I've wanted, they get down to the nitty gritty.
Some honest advice, get the Mac Air with 8gb memory, 512gb, hold on for it for a yr, and sell that baby for the M1X 16 inch. Thats what I'm doing. Put it this way, they don't depreciate like Honda's and Toyota's. Hope this helps. 👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
it's really good to see a Tiger Lake comparison. Due to its (temporary) rarity, you almost only see Ice Lake to M1 comparisons. What we observe is good, but ultimately insufficient, generational gains, which really says more about Intel's long-term prospects than anything. Basically, they need a breakthrough to keep up with either of their competitors, but they're on a really fresh design. I don't know where they go in the next 3-4 years.
Man I've started seeing your videos for a month now and you are already among one of my favorites. You guys give so much detailed review this is just so perfect advice for any buyers looking for a new laptop. And congrats on the 500k 🔥. Will still be with your channel when you hit a mil. Cheers🤯
at 23:48 the title says "Higher is Better" and I think that is incorrect. that said, I Really enjoy your videos and comparisons, I wish I had 1/2 of the laptops you use every day, Keep it coming!!
Even after watching this, I’d still chose XPS 13 because of versatility. Even with these M1 chips, you are severely restricted and limited to what you can do on a Mac. I’m a programmer and I’d choose windows over Mac any day of the week because it allows the user to use older coding platforms like VM while the M1 restricts it. That’s just one example, there are plenty of more examples where M1 puts a ton of restrictions, but they optimized Mac based apps so Apple made apps run the best on M1 chips. Although MacBook Air does certain things better, XPS has that versatility that makes it so much better and you can do everything on it.
@@the-ironclad how dare you telling people what computer is better when its used at it's max potential? They all wanna spend 2k on a mac to browse the internet and watch RU-vid videos 🙄
@@luisrosales9518LOL you're right, a perfect example under this comment someone is saying "Have my Mac for five days now on battery", obviously he isn't using it that much. While may he can discuss with a genuine XPS user who say it doesn't last for me more than 10 hours.
my god the webcam and mic difference lol that's insane. also people complain about 720p cameras on the MacBooks but im in zoom meetings everyday and never had an issue and always look pretty good.
I think you made a mistake with the subtitle input.(Min:sec - Higher is better---->Lower is better). But congratulations on getting 500,000 subscribers. You are a very good influencer. I support you far away from South Korea. And I can't wait to have MacBook Pro M1. I can't buy MacBook Pro M1 in South Korea yet.
Haha thanks for that little Easter egg! I think it’s an Easter egg, because I am blind, and I can’t see the screen as well as you guys! Nice catch! I have an older Dell computer that kind of does the same thing as far as percentage.
This is mind blowing because My 17" HP Omen FEELS 100x faster than my 13" M1 MacBook Pro for web browsing. I don't know how to reconcile that w/ your video.
Forget the Ssd, you can buy external. Upgrade the RAM to 16(it costs the same as the 512 SSD upgrade) just to future proof it a little. The entire machine performance is based on the RAM.
Wow! The sound quality in video cam of the Mac is miles away from XPS, it's so clear and natural, the other one is like a robot. Forget the other test I go for the Mac.
Hello, Great comparison, although I think you should correctly match up the specs on the Dell, so 8 core processor.. I do have a question about the percentage differences you provide for each test. Some tests like the single core Geekbench is calculated to be around 13%, so 15% rounded up is a good estimate. But how is the multi core test 40% faster? My calculations provided a 26% difference. Like so with the Geekbench GPU, I got a 20% difference rather than a 25. Can you provide the way you calculated these?
I appreciate pulling the plug on some of the tests. Honestly though, if we are comparing apples to apples (HA!). Then we really need to do ALL of the tests completely unplugged. What’s the point of a laptop if you can’t enjoy the full power the whole time.
I switched from mac to a XPS13 about 3 years ago. It's a XPS 13 9380, 16GB RAM, 8th gen i7, 512GB SSD, I pretty much spec'ed it to out when I got it. It started to have issues 2 years in. Not a window again.
What I like about my new MacBook Air is that all I had to do when it arrived was to simply log on with my Apple ID. All my apps, docs, & settings were automatically downloaded & set up. Has the Dell gotten to that point?
I've Been looking at laptop reviews for a solid week now. I've prob watched 100 videos. I would just like to say thank you for your perspective of the laptop review. Its very detailed and does an excellent job in my opinion avoiding bias, during tests. You've got my like and subscribe.
Oh wow. People complaining about the MacBook webcam and then I saw the Dell XPS webcam lol. It is also crazy that the whole time the MacBook Pro was unplugged and still beat the plugged in Dell which got even worse when unplugged.
Thanks for the great video as always! What app are you using to show the SOC temp and fan speed in the menu bar? iStat does not yet have support for the sensors in the M1.
When you did Davinci Resolve, and Macbook M1 rendered it in 5 minutes, and Dell XPX in almost 13 minutes, it says that regarding the numbers, that the higher is better. But surely thats a mistake, right? Id guess its better to render it as quick as possible which is why 5 minutes would be better than almost 13 minutes.
Intel: you're an old fool PowerPC: If you strike me down I will be more powerful than you can imagine. Intel: hahahaha! M1: this isn't even my final form. Intel: What sorcery is this??
Great video Max appreciate all your efforts. My question is... Do I need to edit video off an external ssd to preserve the longevity of my M1 macbook pro? I'd love it if you'd explain this and/or do some tests as it potentially could save me a bit of cash. Thanks in advance.
it won't even match the top M1 in 2022. These are just the ultra-slow M1s. The M1X and M1Z, on top of other CPUs we don't know about yet, will be 50% to 100% faster than the M1.
