The power efficiency is one of the reasons why I bought mine. It’s not my most powerful PC by most metrics (also have a 3970x/3090 machine and a 5950x/3090 PC), but my Mac Studio is the one I tend to leave on all day. Yes, I’m beyond overkill with an M1 Ultra with all the cores and 128GB/2TB of RAM and storage, but it’s all good.

What I love about the tech beind the creation of the M1 Ultra chip is that you can see the path where Apple is going with it, if it works so well at this small scale, then it should be very straightforward to scale it up to a Mac Pro sized, where you could have whole clusters of these combined chips working in parallel.

what I want to really see is a 32-Core GPU M1 Max versus a 64-Core GPU M1 Ultra both with 64GB RAM and both hardware SSD slots being used, ensuring max read/write. (doesn’t really matter what storage size so long as both slots are filled but for my personal happiness and to remove all doubt i’d like for them to be the same) THIS would be the fairest and most scientific comparison of the raw power difference between the M1 Max & the M1 Ultra and I don’t think i’ve seen anyone on youtube do it

This was eye opening. The studio I work for has us set up on a 2020 iMac, a Mac Studio with M1 Max, and a 2017 iMac Pro. I'm the new guy in the office and get to work with the 2020 iMac that has a 10-core i9, Radeon Pro 5700 XT and 64GB RAM. I can barely get Premiere to play nicely with a 4k file from a Canon C300 mark III. It's constantly dropping frames and render times for 10 minute videos are upwards of 15 minutes. Meanwhile, if I move over to my personal M1 MacBook Air, I can render in half the time. I can't imagine working on a the Mac Studio. I'd have so much more time to work on my projects!

I was very excited when the M1 Ultra was released in the Studio. I'm not an early adopter by any means and although I saw the shear possibilities of this design, I wanted to see what was next. Apple ushered in the M2 chipsets this spring and that got me interested. I'm still holding out because I see a Spring 2023 Studio with what could very well be an M2 Ultra -OR- 'Extreme'. I can see Apple putting out a 4-die M2, and if you look at the specs of the maxxed out Ultra, there exists the possibility of the M2 'Extreme' with 40-core CPU, 128-core GPU, 64-core Neural Engine. As a person that was not just working in Davinci Resolve video but also dabbling with Houdini, Unreal, Blender etc on a Mac, the "possibility" of an M2 'Extreme' is a tantalizing prospect for content producers in both the film & VFX world. A chip like that would make it possible to work in a Mac environment and still run complex particle and fluid simulations in realtime, or build a virtual production workstation with a footprint of a lunch box and a power draw of a stereo system .. and THAT is bloody exciting ;) Love this video by the way.
@Mori5446YT
@Mori5446YT Год назад
I have a feeling that the M2 'Extreme' you mention is gonna come in the form of a Mac Pro replacement, which is still the elephant in the room in terms of replacing Intel chips in the Mac lineup. And yes, it's undeniable that they will have to push further than the M1 Ultra (further than a possible M2 Ultra even) to attain the performances a Mac Pro can be expected to attain. It had been such a long time since I got THAT excited for a CPU release, I love this new era!
@homemade_vancity
@homemade_vancity Год назад
@@Mori5446YT I see a huge opportunity here for Apple to develop a serious Mx* chip for serious work. My wish is for Apple to put out a Mac Pro with the 4-die "Mx Extreme" chipset and the ability to configure it for the intensive workflows at game devs, animation studios, VFX houses or virtual production stages with whatever GPUs, or bridge peripherals they need. Then also put that same "Mx Extreme" chipset in an off-the-shelf Apple Studio box that the work-from-home freelancer can afford but still meet their pro needs. Maybe it looks like an M2 Extreme for Mac Pro and M1 Extreme for Apple Studio, but you get the idea. In doing something like that, Apple would cater to both markets AND both price tiers without blurring the lines like they did with the recent MacBook Pro/MacBook Air M2 release. With a Pro & Studio release they would define the line between Professional and Freelance grade builds without compromising performance requirements for either market user. That's just my $0.02 as a person who wants Pro performance but doesn't have the $50K budget for a Mac Pro.

It needs all the power if you max out all six thunderbolt channels at the same time. Remember Thunder bold specifications require the thunderbolt channel to supply power to the connected devices unless the device has its own supply. My Sabrent dual NVMe M2 Raid controller has its own 48 watt power brick. How ever many thunder bolt devices need power from the thunder bolt connection. Remember many thunderbolt devices can stack other thunderbolt devices so this power could easily reach 200 watts if all six channels were active with stacked devices at the same time.

The software that I run seems to be bound, not by the CPU or GPU, but by the Neural Engine (NE.) But I'm not aware of anyone who has done a performance test of the NE on any Mac. In fact, I'm not aware of anyone who has created a utility to measure the load on the NE. Even Apple's macOS doesn't seem to have an option for measuring this (eg, in the ps command.) Do you have any experience with measuring the NE? If it's improved from the M1, I'd most likely buy a new Mac.

@Lord_Mangoat
@Lord_Mangoat Год назад
I've got the M1 Max Mac Studio with 64 GB RAM. Don't do anything to intensive with it. At most I sometimes have 4-5 Twitch streams open at a time, which I wouldn't call intensive, but others seem to disagree. I know 4-5 is a lot, but I mod in a few that happen to be live at the same time. Anyway, I have a question for my fellow M1 Mac Studio users. If you are a Twitch user, watching on Safari, if you watch a stream for maybe 1+ hours and the stream ends/raids/hosts another channel, does Safari give you a beach ball for a few seconds? Even causing all other Twitch streams or YT videos to "pause" during the beach ball issue.

@XTJ7
@XTJ7 Год назад
Love mine, hardly breaking a sweat. I have to compile hard on all cores and use the GPU to get it anywhere near 60 degrees. And as soon as the load is gone, it drops right back into the low 40s. It feels like I can throw pretty much anything at it. The only issue I had was with the USB A ports. I have a ton of USB devices with hubs behind hubs, KVM switch etc. - and it would actually make it crash repeatedly. When I connected it to a USB-C hub instead, everything worked just fine. The older Mac Pro had no issues with the same setup, so I suspect Apple's USB A drivers may be a little sensitive? Maybe I just got unlucky with my model. In any case, using USB-C made it work perfectly fine. Everything else about this thing is brilliant. It is compact, uses little energy, is extremely powerful yet always quiet.
@iamwisdomsky
@iamwisdomsky Год назад
USB-A is not really good to be used for Docks/Hubs. Only go for USB-C(USB4) or Thunderbolt 3+ hubs/docks as they can handle almost everything you plug-into it with its 40GBps bandwidth.
