Jamie sells wilderness survival / emergency preparedness gear, and is an avid nature / survivalist guy. This leads me to believe that they don't get along for more political reasons, Adam Savage is a liberal, and is clearly making fun of Jamie as if he's some kind of crazy conspiracy doomsday prepper that lives in an abandoned silo. Classic liberal thing to do.

RAGING BLAZE Well, they're just not friends. As a matter of fact, Adam has said that they've never even had dinner together, not even once, in like 15 years.
@Corristo89
@Corristo89 8 лет назад
+RAGING BLAZE (RAGING BLAZE97) Adam said on numerous occasions that they (him and Jamie) are not friends and drive each other batty. I don't think they hate each other, but they're more like co-workers who work together for practical reasons and have little in common beyond that. And they do it really well! They work in sync on big projects, although their often vastly different approaches to myths (Adam loves overly complex and extravagent solutions while Jamie tries to be as basic as possible (and his usually work better)) do put them at odds with each other. And as fun as Adam is to watch, I think he's difficult to work with: Very twitchy, mood swings, not very methodical at times, has trouble letting others tell him what to do, etc. Jamie might be more boring, but overall a more mellow type of guy. He can have fun and be funny, he just puts it behind his work.

@@tanith117 I was wondering the same. Jamie seems the type to be concerned about privacy and security. When the boogaloo or whatever happens he wants to make sure he can emerge from the ashes 20 years later unscathed. Maybe he had asked Adam to not say anything about where he lives and Adam making vague suggestions like that is stepping over the line. Adam is pushing his buttons on purpose there, you can tell.

As far as the metronomes, I feel like the problem was that they were on an air hockey table. That gives an x axis and a y axis on which to shift. If you’d have done it the same way you did the small scale on roller, I feel like it would’ve worked better.
@Spyhermit
@Spyhermit 3 года назад
My understanding is that the table was too solid. You need the table to move, to allow the swaying motion to synchronize across the devices, slowly moving the metronomes into synch. You have to have shared motion to end up synchronized.

Ehhh, I think people need to get over the whole Adam and Jamie aren't friends thing. Just because they're not friends doesn't mean that they "hate" each other. They like and respect each other well enough to have made a successful TV show that lasted more than a decade that they're both really proud of, and they're both kind of done with working closely alongside the other. That's it. I've seen Jamie pop up on Adam's Tested RU-vid channel, so they obviously keep in touch and occasionally work on little things together, but the days of them fronting a major TV show together are gone.

I still feel like the problem with the metronome table is that a low friction surface is not the only thing needed for them to sync up. they need a force pulling the platform of metronomes back to default position, allowing it to swing back and forth and not just drift around. To do this, they need to hang the platform of metronomes and let gravity do the swinging back to default position.

Well....it was obvious what needed to be done now! I stoppered the sink, mixed the two together, and the bathroom filled with this hazy caustic-smelling gas.... so I opened the window, closed the door, and when my little sister wanted to use the bathroom, I told her she couldn't because I smelled it up, letting her make her own assumptions about what I meant. By the time mom got home, the smell was gone and she never knew till I told her about it as an adult. Don't try that yourself...I've come across stories of people getting sick or worse from that....

I never saw the soda bomb episode but I had the exact experience they were testing, where my soda bomb when the off in my hands, except it was a souped-up more powerful than standard one, the only protection I had was a glove on one hand the other hand felt like I'd slapped water hard, the hand with the glove on it had a slightly sore wrist and I have strong ringing in my ears for 3 days afterwards. the bomb was about 12-18 inches from my face and it stung like I'd been in a cold wind for a while. that was it. No serious injuries. Not like they got from their mock up. I've actually had what they were testing happen to me and it was very uncomfortable mainly from the loud noise and fear it caused. But it wasn't as bad as they think. I got no cuts, no fractures. It was just an uncomfortable experience.

Anton Helsgaun There are many decommissioned underground nuclear missile silos being retrofitted into living spaces in the midwest. Given their usually rural location they aren't extremely pricey. So, even Jamie could be Batman.

regarding the metronomes: I think it's correct to say that they were probably not built to a sufficient tolerance so that the same settings would give virtually identical rates, but it also may be true that with that many metronomes you would need a proportionally greater time for them all to come into phase. I'm not sure if the ones you used were battery operated or driven by a wound spring, but either way, there may not be sufficient time for the effect to become noticeable. If they are battery powered, you could try again, and with a little patience eliminate ones that operate too far from the given set point.

+Greg Scott The issue is that in order for the metronomes to start influencing others, you must have a greater number of metronomes in phase as out of phase. What is 'in phase' shifts between phase groups. These groups would evolve over time, with the largest, at the time, influencing everything else the most. When 50% of the metronomes happen to shift into a phase, then the rest would fall in line in an ever increasing rate. Each metronome added increases the amount of time it would take for this to happen, as there not only more to disrupt the greatest phase, but it also takes more to hit the 50% threshold. This is not even taking into account weight at all. It seems to be an exponential time growth scale, as the entropy inherent in the system would lean towards a bogo sort like effect of phase shifting until a critical number of metronomes is reached to overtake the influence of that noise.

Richard, that is basically what I was implying. But the metronomes also have to be set in such a way that they would run within a certain tolerance of the same rate when running freely. If you take a metronome set to 58 and another set to 72, you can wait for ever and they will never be in phase (click at the same rate simultaneously). Those metronomes are probably not built to extremely exacting standards; they don't really have to be. Probably, with such a large number of metronomes, the tolerance has to be narrower and narrower in order for it to work. I think all those metronomes would eventually come into phase given enough time. And they could start out completely randomly-- they will still come into phase eventually if they are properly coupled.
@rich1051414

Greg Scott Absolutely. I was looking at it from a totally sterile perfect situation, in which case, it likely still wouldn't work in any conceivable amount of time with so many. The noise from interference is so high it would take a miracle for enough to happen to sync up to begin making progress.

I see, and you could be right. Ultimately they just might have tried it with too many, stacking the deck against themselves right from the get-go. There are so many other videos where it works with fewer. It would be a LOT of fun to test it out, though. With this many coupled oscillators it would be impossible to get them going with no bias whatsoever. If you think about it, zero bias would be the opposite of randomness, even if they sound like they are ticking randomly. The math and engineering required to do that would be way beyond any home lab. The oscillators would have to be utterly perfect with absolutely zero differences in rate, you would have to start each one at precisely the right time, and you would see absolutely no movement in the base. That would be virtually impossible. Given enough time, and accurate enough oscillators, I believe they would eventually come into phase. That is what coupled oscillators do. I want to get my hands on some of those metronomes, but have them set at 2 different rates that are in whole number ratio. I'd use a much smaller number of metronomes, with some set at 40 and some set at 60, for a ratio of 2:3. I feel so confident that they will end up in phase. They won't all tick at the same rate of course, (they won't be in 'synch' in that sense) but they will fall into phase with the same rhythm you would hear playing 2 notes against 3 on the piano. The reason I think this will happen is because the whole coupled system will tend to move toward its lowest energy, which I think would result in them coming into phase. I've mentioned this on a few of the coupled oscillator videos but no one has done it. Maybe some have tried but it proved to be a failure. But I REALLY want to know one way or the other.

5:13 I think I can answer why microwaved water actually grows plants better: Water is actually constantly undergoing a minor reaction where it breaks down into Hydroxyl ions (H3O+) and Hydroxide ions (OH-), which in turn combine back into regular old H2O, and the cycle repeats. However, when you boil water (either on stove top or in a microwave), you're also boiling those ions. And hydroxide ions have a lower evaporation energy than hydroxyl ions, so they evaporate faster than the hydroxyl ions as the water heats up. This leaves the water ever so slightly acidic once it's done boiling, since there are more hydroxyl ions than hydroxide ions. And as it turns out, very slightly acidic water is actually good for plants (I don't know all the exact details, but I think it has something to do with making it easier for the plants to fix carbon molecules into their cells from the CO2 they take in). Hence, the plants watered with microwaved water grow better.

The metronome one bugged me. Could have used wooden dowels to pin all of them in a line. Then 1 dowel per line and use something to pick them all up at once. Then I think them starting in sync would keep them in sync

1:57 you can tell by looking at the height of the pendulums that the white metronome in the middle of the screen and the black one to the left are clearly not set to the same frequency. I wonder how many others are off. They all have to be set identically in order to sync up.

I think they didn't sync because the board slid in 3 dimensions... the smaller scale only moved left/right, the large scale also was sliding back and forth, dooming the synchronization
