M-60 is based on the FG-42 paratrooper weapon design with MG-42 belt feed system adapted to it.

And the _M1_ gas operation, and several _Lewis_ elements in both gas operation and locking mechanism.

@@peterson7082its not m1 gas operation they are VERY different. Only common thing is both are long stroke piston , other than that gas system is completely different. Early m1s had a gas trap system and later ones switched to a normal gas system with gas port. M60 on the other hand has a gas port with an expansiok chamber and built in gas cutoff.

A truly effective firearm. 7.62 mm punch, high rate of fire and relatively good accuracy for a machine gun. Yes, it was heavy and the ammo heavy. I had a horrible incident in Vietnam, however, when we took over a perimeter tower during the "Cambodian Incursion." Whichever unit deployed they left us with a defective machine gun. The gas cylinder system had a leak and would only fire 1 round and not cycle the next round into battery. We discovered this defect during an enemy ground attack.

Oh wow. What happened after that point? How did you adapt and get out of that situation? PS -Welcome Home

@@wightclaudia Devine and I opened fire with our M-16's. The OG called for a "mad minute" in our sector, which meant all towers & bunkers sweep their fields of fire for about a minute. Lots of weapons cleaned before breakfast, shower and sleep! Whichever unit had responsibility for that tower replaced the M-60. Thank you.

Was the piston put in backwards??

@donalddodson7365 Год назад
@@hairydogstail All we were told is the M-60 was in the armory when they unit was sent to Cambodia. They grabbed a non-op for whoever took over their Tower and took a good one. I'm OK with that, IF they had put a big tag on the dud they left for us, and would have had our armorer find out what it needed. Something was wrong with the gas cylinder, or the cap. I'm not familiar enough with the M-60 to know whether or not the piston can be put in backwards. Hey, I was an oboist! :-0
@hairydogstail
@hairydogstail Год назад
@@donalddodson7365 I hear you. It was easy to insert the gas piston backwards, which was a failing of the early design. From what I have heard the new models fixed that design flaw and are one of the best GPMG's today..You guys were also given a rifle that wasn't yet perfected that would jam all the time too. Today the M-4 is a very reliable rifle as long as it is maintained with good parts and an armorer who know what they are doing..I'm glad I missed that party back in the 60's and 70's, I always supported you guys, even as a kid....Thank you for your service...

A lot of people tried to copy the G3 receiver, because it was stamped sheet metal. Not many succeeded at it, though. You'd think it's hard to screw that up; but you'd be wrong. To this day that rifle is still in service in many parts of the world, and is my favorite rifle ever. It's also my father's favorite rifle.
@Dbusdriver71
@Dbusdriver71 6 месяцев назад
Funny you should call it a 'rifle'. Like the 'Matel 16' is was 'different'. The M-60 is a 'mutt' machine gun that 'borrow's from 3 or 4 different designs. There wasn't a lot of thought put into it. We would have been better off buying the MG-4259 after WW2. We would still be using it today. The M-60 I First got was fresh out of the Crate in the late 80's. It was a very tempermental weapon. I had to get into tremendous physical shape to keep up with the Riflemen. Many times, it really was a 'unique' rifle.

G3's are a bitch to take apart; but in my experience, the good thing about them is that you don't have to do that very often. Most reliable guns I've ever shot. I've never had one jam on me, and I've fed them all kinds of ammo, from Sierra Match Grade to surplus NATO rounds, to reloads. You might have had a bum receiver. There were a lot of those going around about 15 years ago.

On an M-60, if you fire 100 rounds within a minute, you have to change the barrel. 7.62 Nato, aka 7.62 Winchester aka 7.62x51 is a pretty hot round. Metal conducts heat like it's going out of style. I've talked to more m-60 gunners than you, apparently, because they have all told me that either they managed to scrounge up an asbestos glove, or they wished they had. And the vid has more cuts than a suicide girl. It's an instructional vid. For illustrative purposes.

What they show in the vid about changing the barrel by grabbing the bipod is fake. Metal conducts heat way too much for that. I've never fired a machine gun; but I've studied them a lot, and I've watched people fire them. A steady burst of beltfed lead can get a barrell red hot very quickly.
