In Shakespeare's Macbeth, a brave Scottish general (Macbeth) receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that he will become King of Scotland one day. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia.
This scene shows the witches in their “workshop," so to speak, where they cook up all forms of evil brews. It harkens back to their first appearance in the play, and it reveals to the audience how they plotted to deceived Macbeth. The repeating of the word “Double" serves as a reminder that their speech is full of double meanings and contradictions, which Macbeth failed to consider until it was too late.
