Macbeth is a tragedy about a Scottish general who is prophesied by three witches to become king. Driven by ambition and goaded by his wife, Lady Macbeth, he murders King Duncan and usurps the throne. Consumed by guilt and paranoia, Macbeth orders more killings, including his friend Banquo and Macduf's family. Lady Macbeth, tormented by guit, descends into madness and dies. Macbeth becomes a tyrant, prompting Macduff and Duncan's son, Malcolm, to raise an army against him. In the final battle, Macbeth realizes his vulnerability and is slain by Macduff Malcolm ascends to the throne, restoring peace to Scotland.
