Thanks, great video. I'd love to note one thing for people who don't have an extra HDD/SSD lying around, instead of buying a whole USB (flash) drive, you can also buy a M2 USB adapter for NVMe drives. You're right on not being able to find a reasonable priced adapter for drives with the Mac connector, but for regular drives there are plenty of cheap and reliable adapters out there, which means you only have to clone it once: directly to your new drive and then you only have to put it in your Mac afterwards. But, if one's going to do that, they might want to skip to the end of the video where you format the drive before running the cloning software again.
Yes that's true and also the M2 USB adapters are much cheaper now than at the time of recording! However once you put your NVMe in, what are you gonna use the M2 adapter for?
@@Andytizer yeah that's a good point. Might be handy to have around for possible other situations where you need to read out drives like that (or at some point on a new device, the drive you installed in your Macbook), and with a good deal an adapter can be cheaper than a drive with enough storage. But even then it might be more cost effective for some to buy any type of storage to use for other purposes after the cloning process rather than having an adapter you don't do much with.
Battery should be disconnected first before removing any components from the logic board. Also when opening up the case and you see this much dust/dirt you should take the time to use compressed air and blow out all the dust and debris from the computer. I usually wipe down the inside part of the case cover as well before closing the case up.
Thank You So much for your helpful video. I had no idea that this could be done and with the help of Your video I was able to change my old MacBook from 128GB To 500GB and add many years to its usefulness. As a matter of fact, I’m still using it to this very day as I write this comment. You should feel proud that the video You posted so long ago, has helped so many people. I’m so very thankful to You for taking the time to share Your knowledge with so many. Augusta, Ga. USA 👍👍
Couple of critical points missed for non-Mac user upgrading: for this to work 1) power supply must be plugged in 2)external drive must have no partitions/containers and fully formated as a whole 3) the formating/initializing of upgrade SSD should state "GUI" in line below format choice. You need to update this great video as Carbon Copier has a new version which is even more awesome & still with free trial
Thanks. I went with this solution as well. I can’t tell if it’s really affecting my battery very much, but I’m keeping the screen a little dimmer just to compensate. As for reinstallation, I just put Monterey installer on a thumb drive booted to the Internet for recovery mode and it worked perfectly.
Woooooooooooooooow! You saved my music career with this one!! Will this same SSD and adapter work for the 13 inch MacBook Air (early 2015)?? thank you so much!!
Very good and easy to follow. I carried out a similar upgrade in a 2010 Mac mini and I just installed a SSD hard drive and installed the contents of my old drive from the time machine back up external hard drive.
Easiest way is to make a time machine backup, install the new drive, CMD + R to format new drive and install software then reinstall time machine backup. saves you alot of time.
Thanks for the video. This actually works great and the easiest to follow, even not using sintech adaptor (i used the cheapest adaptor, sintech is expensive here). Advise is some SSD may not recognize at the beginning but after format (use disk utility boot from cloned external drive), it will work as the video.
Useful video! Just wonder how's the battery performance with P2? Heard that the battery drains really fast with it. Would love to know if it's true. Thank you very much!
Very well explained, thanks. I have a 11inch, MacBook Air early 2015 with a 250gb SSD, which I wish to upgrade to 1TB, using the Crucial P1 NVMe 1TB SSD. Will I need the same Sintech NGFF adapter? Thanks in advance. Percy
you can use that adapter or the smaller less bulky version from amazon www.amazon.com/dp/B07FYY3H5F/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glc_i_qlJ.FbV7WH22Z?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1 used in this video ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4SSxtWPogFQ.html
@Andrew Tsai thank you for this video. I have a question. Can we still use carbon copy as you did after upgrading os to Big Sur. Or we have to boot and install from USB ? Thank you for your answer.
Because when using CCC you can create and identical “bootable” copy of the OS with all files, this copy could even be ran via USB (although speeds will be heavily reduced)
Ok this is a long shot but has anyone else had "wake" issues after this hardware change? About 75% of the time, my macbook refuses to wake on open, doesn't respond to repeated ESC presses or mousepad clicks. I usually wind up holding down the power key to restart. Anyone? Anyone?
I have a question. I have the 13 inch 128gb early 2015 macbook air. If I change it to the 500 gb SSD will it improve the speed on the laptop? Right now it lags after upgrading to Big Sur
Great video Thanks so I have one question, Where can I buy the adapter for the ssd drive please I look for it and I can't find the place have nice day.
Hi, I followed every step, but after the first reboot, while holding the Option key, I don’t get any volumes to choose from. Only an option to connect to the internet.... any ideas on how to solve this problem? Thanks
Good video but you say 'no adapter' is necessary in the written description at top BUT you show one being used at 7:16. What is the name of this adapter please?
Hi , I want to ask, replace the flash storage of the Macbook Pro 2015 with another SSD from info some friends in the group, there are experience naturally can't hibernate or sleep mode, the battery heats up quickly and wastes and even some that die completely can't be restored again because of the panic screen and then it's completely dead can't be repaired again. My question is, should I look for an SSD and converter that is really compatible because each SSD has different speeds, while the Mac software is not as fast as the latest SSD. Then the type of ssd must also be the same as the original. Friends say it's like we ride a BMW, spare parts are replaced by LOWEST part , let alone use a converter. Then, if we replace the SSD, the one that appears in our storage is not FLASH STORAGE but SSD, is there really a difference that can cause occasional errors? Then the final question, if the SSD is replaced, the OS is upgraded, can it ERROR and die. Is there something natural about it? Thanks for the answers to some of the questions above. I hope this channel will be more successful
Thanks for the video I think it is very useful. I just have one question I have the same MacBook model, but it is incredible slow opening apps and documents, is literally a nightmare. Do you think it will improve with a new SSD?? Thanks.
hello sir, thank you for the video, i have 2 questions 1) can i use a usb memory stick to copy the data instead of the external hard drive(if yes, in which format the usb flash memory should be)? , 2) i have a windows 10 installed on my macbook air using bootcamp, so is it going to copy it without a problem or it will only compy the macOS only?
1) Yes if the USB is big enough, macOS Journaled or APFS. 2) Copying Bootcamp is tricky, I would just start fresh or you can use paid software Winclone.
Hi Percy... if you're still wondering, both the 1TB and 2TB are fine. I believe the 1TB Crucial drive has faster read/write speeds too. I'm still researching all of this but I'm opting for the 500GB drive featured in this video only as it's much cheaper.
@@rick_terscale1111 one issue with these Crucial drives now is that they degraded the components inside that drive recently. Same as how some other brands like WD did it with some models. Also, heat is a big concern with this type of drives in general, meaning your Macbook will run noticably warmer. The basic rule with NVMe drives is that speed comes with heat. I've tried a few. Samsung NVMes ran the hottest but still seemed to keep their speed. Crucial ones, WD ones and Kingston ones I have (especially used the Kingston A2000 for some time), they ran pretty hot too but not as hot as the Samsung. They seem to throttle if your doing very heavy tasks and they get really hot though. Even when you're basically doing nothing, they all run "warm". The drive I'm using now is the Intel 660p, which is definitely the best option in terms of heat, there's very little difference with my original drive. However, it comes with the downside of QLC (which means slower speed when you start filling the drive, same for Crucial P2). The Intel is also noticably slower in general than most NVMe drives, running at SATA speeds. But from day-to-day use, you get the storage upgrade and casual users won't ever notice the difference in speed over time. And it makes sense, because like I said, the faster the drive is the more heat it will generate.
Any one having problem on running OS BigSure? I'm with my crucial ssd running with OS Mojave, all good with Mojave, but I can't up grade to BigSure. It can't install because the drive does not have "APFS", that's the massage that I get.
Hi i found your videos really helpful, may i ask if i have macbook air 11 inch 2015 128gb ssd by default, am i capable to 500gb SSD upgrade?, Really looking forward to your response
I cannot seem to get the external to read as a bootable drive does it have to be in a certain format also should mention that this is on the latest version of monterey and CCC 6, any help would be appreciated
FYI: I performed this upgrade also in a 2014 rmbp with the samsung evo plus 1tb, found out the sleep/standby/hibernation/autopoweroff issues affected the 2013-2014 models, reading on the macrumors forum website thread this known for all aftermarket ssds and apple has no plan to update the dxe boot rom driver for this forums.macrumors.com/threads/upgrading-2013-2014-macbook-pro-ssd-to-m-2-nvme.2034976/page-257 Mac models will enter Standby mode after they have been sleeping for 3 hours. Great! I have an Early 2014 Macbook Air 13 inch that I would like to upgrade to a Crucial P2 500GB SSD. Would this M.2 adapter work for my computer? Thanks in advance!
Andrew Tsai Is it possible that I got a bad Crucial SSD? I have tried to using in different computers from other clients and none of my computers recognized the Crucial SSD. I am really having a hard time on this one because I feel I got a bad ssd. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks a lot for your help and the video.

As a best practice, you should disconnect the battery as well as press the power button for a second or two to fully discharge the system. In reality, I've worked on hundreds of laptops (Mac and Windows) without disconnecting the battery and sometimes even the power supply without any issues. Laptops are a lot more robust than they're given credit for.
@@LPAFilm I had to create a mount of Monterey using the terminal as explained here ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Mqnr3f8eikc.html&ab_channel=Jinu%27sTech-Videos . Then I was able to install Monterey on the new SDD and during the installation I was able to copy data from the clone. It is slightly longer but it worked fine.

Hey, I tried this, and I have the same computer, adapter, and hard drive, but after I turned my computer after installing it, it has a Big Mac folder with a question mark on it, with the screen black in the background. What do I do?
@@Andytizer Ok, I’m using a sea gate external hard-drive and it’s not showing. I just fixed something and it’s only showing the internet recovery when as I’m trying to use it to back it up, when I go in and press the internet recovery option, it leads to other options, and I can see that it picked up, yet not when I first turn it on 😭
I noticed the SSD is a “P2” while the adapter I noticed only supports “P1” I tried to install the same SSD on my MacBook and right now I cannot get the drive to appear on my Mac. But when I put the old SSD back in the machine it runs just fine. Please help
@@LPAFilm Yes I did, turns out it had nothing to do with the hardware, Amazon even explains this in small print on the specs section of the item. These drives come with absolutely no info on them, so you have to boot the mac up with an external drive (that has compatible mac os on it) and than configure the new SSD that way in the settings, otherwise the mac wont recognize the new SSD because there is no pre existing software on it.
:-( after installing the new SSD and powering up with the option key held down my macbook air (early 2015, Mojave) only shows the external usb drive. Any thoughts?
@@thehacklife0913 I have no idea if the 11 inch ssd is replaceable or not. If I had to guess I would say it is but I'd suggest googling around and see what you can find out.

Typical Apple, I hate that their products are so good otherwise nobody would buy anything from these shysters. In their new MacBooks every time you open an app that information goes straight to an Apple server while at the same time they claim they are so concerned with your privacy and you cannot turn this off. Using the privacy argument they wont allow the right to repair or have your own devices repaired by a third party, again shysters.
