@Chris well there is a reason … I love MacOS and the Mac in general … however a lot of programs I use have either reduced functionality on Mac or don’t work at all and some very popular ones like quicken has functions that work on Windows that don’t work on MacOS … the whole Microsoft office suite does not have all the functions on MacOS and with dual screen I run MacOS on one side and windows 11 on the other all seem less and it works like a charm under Parallels. With my previous Mac It struggled. That M1 chip is probably the best processor to run windows with VM . So yes I get the benefit of both without needing 2 machines and it is all integrated … the files etc. Pretty cool. Hope this helps

I agree. The M1 Air is, pound-for-pound, the best laptop ever made. In years to come, people will speak of it in legendary terms. For those of you who haven't bought one yet, the only thing I would advise is to go for 16GB. Although, in individual tasks, the 8GB is able to do everything the 16GB can do, in EXTREME multiple tasks (like 70 Chrome tabs plus various heavy video/sound editing apps plus whatever concurrently) you may experience a slowdown. It's just that the M1 processor is so good that you don't want to limit it in any way.

There is one killer feature that I did not see mentioned in this video that pushes the Pro ahead, screen brightness. The air screen is barely usable outdoors while the Pro 14 is very usable... During these work at home Covid times of seemingly constant indoor desk time being able to get outside for some fresh air is a huge win...

I completely agree! I first bought a 16" M1 Max because I was so excited about the new machines. Loved everything about it, but then realized that I don't need it right now because the company that I currently work for already provides me with an editing machine. So I returned the $3500 M1 Max and bought a M1 Macbook Air for $800 on sale at Costco. Yes $800! I've had the M1 Macbook Air for a couple months now and love it! It's super light, easy to cary around, the battery lasts more than all day, and cheap enough to not worry about it vs worrying about a $3500 M1 Max getting stolen. So far it does everything that I need it to do including editing a rare personal video in Davinci Resolve. I did love the screen of the M1 Max, so for the money that I saved on the buying the Macbook AIr, I went out and bought a Sony 65" OLED TV. I'm so glad I went with the Air and Sony OLED instead! Now I get the best of both worlds. Definitely a better decision! Love your RU-vid Channel and all your benchmark test. I use it all the time for my Apple purchasing decisions! Thank you!

I was using my 2015 MacBook Air for work up until a few months ago and it was able to run MSFT Outlook, Word, PPT, Teams, and Excel all at the same time with very large files opened. Not to mention dozens of tabs open in Safari. I finally upgraded to the 2020 MacBook Air because my 2015 battery wasn’t holding for more than an hour. I am quite happy with the MacBook Air. I even have a $6k iMac setup that I mostly use for gaming but I don’t notice much performance difference when using office applications. So I agree that most of the time we don’t need the extra cores.

I had the 2017 MacBook Pro 13 inch and waited patiently to upgrade to the base model 14 inch MacBook Pro. I almost pulled the trigger when the first M1 chip came into the 13 inch pros but decided to wait. This new 14 inch pro, even the base model just smokes the 2017 into the sunset. I stream often and usually for long periods of time. I can throw OBS, have 5-10 streamers tabbed, run Elgato software and much more! I’ve barely even heard the fan going even if it’s in stress mode. Luckily I got about $400 for my 2017 pro trade in which I got apple care+ on it 💯

The only reason I have a 14" MBP is because I needed two TB external displays. I know there are work arounds with USB display port type setups. The issue was that these solutions came at a performance cost and for streaming just wasn't good. Probably when all the divers and software is ARM compiled the MBA will work okay, but I need hardware that can run the software in emulation today. Also, at times I wish I had gotten the MAX for the third display capability. I don't need super high resolution displays, so why can't apple let me run three 1440p external displays. Really frustrated that Apple forces these artificial limitations on their products. These weren't limits with their Intel laptops and it is off putting that it is so with their M1s. Really the biggest complaint I have against the M1 architecture.
@AllgoodthingsTv

The M1 MacBook Air is quite the machine - blazing fast. TBH, I really don't notice that much of a difference between my M1 MacBook Pro 16" mid tier model and the M1 MacBook Air in most tasks. However, I used to dread using the M1 MB over the old Intel 16" because the screen and other accoutrements on that Pro machine just made it a better overall experience. The M1 MacBook Air feels like a super computer in a very average body, and that can make it less than thrilling to use.
@andyshuai8024

That makes sense! The pro and air for M1, the main notable difference is an extra gpu core, a fan, and a touch bar. Performance wise, those two laptops are very similar. Though I’m excited to see where it goes in the future

If you get a MBP 13 with 16GB RAM/512GB SSD it’s only $300 less than the MBP 14 with a better miniLED display with 120hz, MagSafe, extra ports, 1080p webcam, better speakers and a more modern design. +1 great job keeping it real on this channel and blindly hyping the high end stuff as if it's right for everyone And fwiw I agree 💯% on the M1 Air being the best bang for the buck laptop ever created, and the right choice for most normies. The combination of performance, display quality and resolution, efficiency, noiseless/cool operation, portability, keyboard and trackpad, and battery life are killer. Only wish it had an SD card slot and USB-C ports on both sides. Otherwise it's pretty much shocking how capable it is, even in base 8GB trim.

I Just shifted from Windows to Mac. I plan to have a laptop that will last for years, so spending little extra money does not worry me if it grants me more usability and longevity for years to come especially when I travel and I am on the go. So I decided to go for a MBP 14" due to more ports (mainly connecting to projectors and screens), better screen, better webcam (hi remote workers), better speakers (no need for external Bluetooth speakers to enjoy music) and more SSD and RAM that now might not make any difference, but who knows in 3-4 years. I do believe that for people that want their laptop to last over 3-4 years leveling up is a wise choice.

So, solid use and justification for my purchase of the 14" base. I am quite fond of D3, Civ6 and WOW, all good to run at full graphics on the pro chip. I ride a motorbike and plan on nation crossing using a tent and hate wearing headphones, so portable with great cinematic sound (I passed on the 16" due to the portability). Sure, my case fits in that 5% that would benefit from the extra purchase price. But is it really 5%? Home iMac users have trended to WOW and Civ6 and expect a Civ7 or a WOW update that upgrades the graphics to make it unplayable, even on low graphic setting. There are a few games out there written to Mac and well, we will stay with the more friendly platform if we can still get a few good games running.

I think I'd go for the Air if the 16/256 model would be actually available anywhere at a good price, but i only find it at 1300 € and above. I was on the fence on getting the M1 pro or the air. I decided on the Air, mainly because of pricing. I went from a 2017 intel MBP to an M1 MBA 8gb ram /512gb SSD. Don’t regret the purchase at all. The M1 Air is a beast of a machine. I do some light video editing every now and then and some music stuff in Logic Pro as a fun hobby. The Air handles everything so smoothly and fast. It’s perfect for my needs. The M1 MBP is a machine actually made for professionals that need the power. For me, an elementary educator and someone that does video and music stuff as a hobby, the M1 Air is perfect.

Agreed, go with the air. I’m an everyday user and occasionally edit 4K videos, i don’t need the pros man. The air is the best buy ever! Coming from a long time mac book pro user previously using the 2011, 2012, 2017 (which is worse btw because of fan and warm temp), and 2019.

I keep getting sound problems in this video. Is this just me? Despite that I went for the 14" MBP due to more ports and better overall performance. I definitely need the ports, might do with the Air otherwise, but I hate the idea of a dongle or dock for a mobile use case. Great video and very helpful, thank you!

The M1 air with 16gb ram and 512 gb ssd costs me around 1500 Euros, the M2 Air with the same config costs almost 2000 Euros just the same as the 14 M1 pro. I have started video editing as a hobby and currently use my desktop pc (R5 5600x, 3080, 32gb ram) for that but I want something as well for the go since I am often on the go. Which model would you recommend me? I want to keep the device at least for 5 yrs.

Another thing to consider, unless you need a laptop today, the M2 Air will likely have similar multi-core score as the M1X binned 14", with a higher single-core score.. and dare I say may be supported 1 year longer? maybe not. Probably only matters to me who keeps laptops for a decade lol. I know the 14" Pro has the dedicated encoders and crazy fast RAM, more bass in the speakers, but I think that's where the differences will end compared to M2 Air. Fingers crossed M2 Air will have mini LED, but I doubt it. Another thing- the Pro IS twice as much, but it comes with 16gb ram/512 storage.. so if you upgraded the Air to those specs, now it's just a $600 difference (which is still significant for some). M2 Air it'll probably be a $500 difference.. then the M2 13" Pro upgraded is only $300 less than the M1 14". It gets kind of crazy. No-brainer to get the Air if you don't need 16gigs/512 storage though.

It’s April 2022. Just ordered a base 14” MBP w 96W power adapter. Delivery is still 4 weeks out! The laptop will be mostly be a transportable desktop replacement, not a mobile device. Yeah, it may be more power than I need, but I’m a buy once-cry once person and would’ve up-specd the MBA anyway, closing the price gap a little. Your breakdown on needs vs price vs capability is totally valid though.

Hi Guys, Love you videos, however, not all creatives do video/photo-editing and it would be really good to see a test on the new MacBook Pros for Graphic Designers. Basically using Adobe Creative Suite with InDesign, Illustrator and Photoshop open and in use, as designers constantly jump between them. Also whilst having Chrome open with multiple tabs (for research) say x20. Which M1 MacBook Pro and how much ram would be best for this kind of usage? That would be great, thx.

I think this is a great honest video. I have the mba M1, had the old 17” MacBook Pro. For most people I agree the mba is a compelling product especially for a college student who needs to lug it around all day from class to class(yea we are back to physical classrooms). However, I am now seeing I will run into an issue soon and that is wishing to drive a two monitor setup for my CS classes. This is where where I wished I had a mbp. Again this is a pretty niche want. Battery life on mba is just incredible even running WiFi, airport display on my large iPad Pro lasting entire day in library and classes.

Great content, thank you for this comparison. Even though the conclusion is that MBA is the better choice for most people with regards to the price, I think it is still difficult to believe and go with lower specs when we’re buying with a 3-5 year time frame of usage in mind. Sure, like you said we could re-sell and buy a new one later on, but most people may not want to go through the trouble of formatting the SSD, transfering data, etc. We just don’t have this time. As a tech youtuber you must have always new hardware so this decision must be easier (wild assumption). Also, one thing I noticed recently on my MSI windows laptop is that she speed was always great until I started using an external monitor. Somehow, Premiere or Photoshop are EXTREMELY slow when displaying on the external display. Things like that make me worry that I may experience such an issue at some time with the MBA. If I buy it and 1 year from now the Premiere pro UI starts to be choppy, laggy due to new OS updates + potentially new camera encoding, what would I do? I’d be so pissed at that decision… So yeah, for the peace of mind, most people end up getting something slightly better. What’s unfortunate is that the MBA is really limited in the specs. Not much to upgrade…

The M1 MBA for $850 is an outstanding value. You can definitely do light software development on it. But, 8GB is still 8GB. If you're the kind of person that tends to leave lots of browser tabs open (30+), you may have to limit that. But, that's not much of a limitation.

@@randomlee101 Battery life is crazy long. It's an all day laptop for normal use. But, when I do software development I have it plugged in to a second monitor and power, so I don't know how long it would last in that case. I suspect it would be very good. I'm mostly doing light web development, such as a simple single page web app, and 8 GB is fine for that. I've played around with Android Studio creating an app from a built-in project template, brought up the emulator, set breakpoints, and stepped through code. And, 8GB handled that fine. I don't know how it would do with a more substantial app. It might do OK, or it might bog down.

The Air does get the job done for most people, great recommendation! Personally I do find the 14' MBP to be in another league entirely, quite a superior computer for those who want the power. So far I'm amazed by my MBP, I was going to buy a maxed out MBA but for that price I invested an extra 200 USD to get a far better processor and screen plus it allows me to use Logic and Final Cut quite flawlessly and some casual gaming without overheating and throttling issues. :)

I have the base 14 inch pro for med school. I guarantee you that the air is more than enough for what I need out of my machine. That said, it is really nice having the best that you can get right now as I feel that it may be a bit future proof compared to the air. Furthermore, the build in HDMI port is very convenient for me as I use it every day.

The MBA m1 is a remarkable laptop. I own both the mb Pro 14 and the mb Air. The only issues I find with the mba is the display brightness, the screen size which makes browsing a little bit constrained and finally the type ports only on one side. The 14 isn't much bigger, but the screen is brighter and the pro motion is really nice. Overall 99% of people should go with the MBA m1. Phenomenal laptop
