One big advantage of this laptop is the fact that being x86, after apple stops supporting it, you can always just use windows or Linux. However, the battery being so hard to swap, the ram, storage and everything else really being soldered.....you do play a risky game. As a ex hackintosher from the early snow leopard days, to a macbook user for about 2 years now, the software is still great.... the hardware is almost disposable
@montaguebarnabasltd

True. That’s the reason I keep these Macs around, I guess. Yup, it’s disappointing to see an era of laptops with Apple Silicon leap ahead of its predecessors, but leave us with absolutely no customisation or self repair options.

Good luck! I've tried putting Linux on my 2020 Intel Air. There are lots of hardware issues that are unresolved on any T2 based Mac. Better off running Windows on T2 MacBooks. I am not trolling, just telling you what a week of frustration told me.

Crazy when you consider how high quality the components used are. Apple truly is one perfect example of a company that has fooled millions into believing they care about the sustainability, meanwhile making completely disposable machines. I have an M2 Air which I enjoy, but I bought it used and I'll continue doing so as long as Apple are so malicious towards repair.

I have a 2019 MBP 16 inch with i9 9980HK, 32GB RAM, 2TB SSD and Pro 5600M HBM2. CPU and GPU repasted using Honeywell PTM7950. Added thermal putty for VRMs and other components. The thing runs like a beast, on the same level as a M3 and much better than any older M chips. Temperature NEVER exceeds 85 degrees Celcius. Set the fans at ~3800 rpm and they are almost silent while still giving good cooling performance (they will only start to become a little bit noisy by ~4500 rpm, but I dont care because where I live, industrial-grade fans are used all the time in households instead of air conditioners). So I would say, the problem does not come from the machine, but from the user!

@Xalite_ 4 месяца назад
I actually picked one of these up a couple of days ago to replace my 2015 15inch as my daily driver. I feel like I got a fantastic deal as I picked up a top spec i9 and 5600m equipped one with 32gigs of ram and a tb of storage for £800. The only downside was that the bottom bezel was cracked on the screen. But I looked into it, it's still in warranty as it was purchased by an enterprise customer in September 2021 (Bet he felt really dumb a month after when the m1 pros came out) At least for the last couple of days that I've owned it, it runs super cool at about 35 degrees while doing normal computer stuff like watching videos or web browsing. But it does get quite hot doing anything demanding such as a bit of windows gaming that I do and I brought it to its knees exporting my Xcode project. But I find it tops out at 85 degrees with the fans at max. So far anyway, I'm really loving this computer. I'm definitely bummed that I can't upgrade anything on it though, for my hyper weird use case I find that it's pretty much perfect for me being the most powerful intel MacBook that Apple made.
@montaguebarnabasltd
@montaguebarnabasltd 4 месяца назад
You know what, that’s a pretty powerful machine for that price, yeah. Glad you see good use out of it. Those M1 Pros are still so out of reach price-wise that it’s genuinely not the worst idea to just buy a 2019 and sell it when the 2021s come down in price. Thermal performance probably depends on how the paste is doing, to be fair. Glad yours is good!
@Xalite_
@Xalite_ 4 месяца назад
@@montaguebarnabasltd I'm honestly super happy so far and the nice thing is that since it's still on warranty I can take it in and get that crack on the screen sorted for free and they'll do the thermal paste at the same time since the logic board has to come out to get the screen off on these. So I'll be laughing with my nearly new 16 inch that runs super cool. At the time these came out it was a dream machine for me since it was powerful, fixed all the issues with the previous butterfly keyboard Macs while keeping the in my opinion really beautiful design of the Touch Bar generation. But I wasn't planning on shelling out £3500 of a new one at the time. So as you would imagine getting one at £800 is pretty much a dream come true for me. By the way, really love your videos. I watch every single one. Please keep doing what you're doing. Much love from another Mac lover.

35deg idle... ye I don't believe it. Mine sits at 65-70 idle then goes up to 80 as soon as you open safari. Mines the same spec apart from I have the 5500M. Awful machines, biggest waste of 5k ive ever spent. my m1 MacBook Air walks it in everything but graphical tasks but then its not that far behind.
@Xalite_
@Xalite_ 4 месяца назад
 @tomscott88 I completely understand your scepticism, we all know that Intel Macs are pretty much dinosaurs at this point at least compared to the shiny new apple silicon Macs. But at least at time of writing having owned this 16 inch for a couple of days with a fresh install of Sonoma it wakes from sleep at 35 degrees, sits between that and 40 at idle. Then heats up to around 50 degrees doing normal web browsing or content viewing after about 20 minutes, don't get me wrong when I do throw things at it it'll heat up but I find it tops out at 85 degrees with the fans at max. Being an Xcode developer obviously I can't speak for other things but compiling my current project brought it to its knees and sent it straight to that 85 degrees and set the jet turbines into overdrive. The only reasons I can think of as to why I'm seeing dramatically different results compared to everyone else is A: This specific Intel 16 inch is a decent bit newer that most of them that are kicking around because it was manufactured on September 2021. And B: since as of time of writing my part of the uk is sitting at -4 degrees and my house isn't the warmest in the world I would imagine that the ambient temps are probably having an effect on the operating temps of the MacBook. But at the end of the day the best computer for someone is one that fits their needs the best and at least right now this MacBook is fitting all of mine perfectly and I'm glad that the M1 Air fits yours.

Very informative video, good job! When the 1st M1 MacBook was dropped, it was immediately obvious to many that we're in the PowerPC Intel situation and should sell any intel machines while we can. :) Those who still own one of these do it for a reason I think, like the option of running a linux distro or dual booting windows. I believe some might find this helpful: I am actively using 3.5 macs atm. (yes 3.5 :) ) - 2019 iMac 36gb of ram, 3ghz 6core i5 - Hackintosh build running Ventura 48gb of ram, 2.8ghz 6 core 10th gen coffee lake - 2021 MacBook Air M1 8gb - 2023 MacBook Air M2 24gb Findings: - The intel machines are rarely used. I can't help it, they are both on my desk, I can't stand the idea of not using them anymore, but I don't bother turning them on unless I specifically need a large screen. Despite the fact that I spent significant time and money upgrading them, they feel laggy compared to the M-s. - Almost no perceived difference between the M1 and M2 (with 3 times more memory). I am a software engineer often running multiple simulators, a host of docker containers and multiple ide-s, yet the M1 feels just as capable as the M2. The M2 is company property and using them side-by-side confirms the rightness not having paid this much for my personal machine. TLDR: If you own an intel machine, it's time to make the difficult decision and sell it while you can. If you are on the market for an M1, M2, M3, you're safe going for a middle spec model as it is still perfectly usable and will outperform your top spec intel machine. The Hackintosh era is racing towards the end

I've seen a lot of reviews claiming the M1 MacBook Pros even at base configurations are faster than the 32gb 2019 MBPs. I find it a bit hard to believe an 8GB RAM Mac could match one with 32GB Ram from only a year before, but, in need of an upgrade from my broken 2018 13" MBP, I'm really having trouble justifying the 2019 version beyond price when it comes to professional photo and video editing just because of the throttling on the intel's and efficiency of the M1's. When a refurbished M1 is the same or only 200 euros more than this, makes it difficult to go with an intel Mac anymore.

It’s an odd situation considering there’s only a year’s difference, yep. I can honestly say I’d choose the 8gb M1 over any of the 16” 2019s any day, though. That claim makes no sense. It doesn't work like that. Memory is memory. Most applications use electron js now which is a framework designed to allow you to run JavaScript on your machine via bundling a chromium engine with every build. This means that a lot of applications use a lot of memory by default. So 8gb of ram is barley enough to run a couple of chrome tabs slack/teams and some text editor lol.

The biggest problem with the Touch Bar is that Apple did nothing to develop it further. I have a feeling there was an internal struggle within the various teams, with some loving it, and some hating it. At first the ones who are for it won out, then the ones who were against it eventually prevailed. In my experience qs an IT professional, the Touch Bar has a really high failure rate in the 2016 through 2018 models. I've never had a 2019 Touch Bar fail, but that may be due to not as many people buying them (being a higher-end model). The problem with the Touch Bar failing, you essentially can't boot the whole computer into an OS. That being said, I think it was really good idea that would've been really nice had they developed it further. The 16" 2019 is my main laptop as well.

I still remember Steve Jobs giving his speech at the January 2006 Keynote and how Apple was SWITCHING to Intel for the very reason they abandoned Intel in 2020. It will be a very sad day when the support for intel macs stop because if you go on eBay the amount of people buying and bidding on intel macs is quite high. What i really hate about the modern macs is that they are not user upgradeable or fixable which makes them outright extremely costly and then even more costly if something goes wrong in them. The good thing about the intel macs is being able to dual boot with a different OS so there will be options to use latest software for a while yet even some people run Windows 11 on the 2010 macbooks and it looks like it runs quite smoothly for them. I do think Apple and Microsoft are going to be responsible for unprecedented ewaste in the next few years and they will probably face quite a lot of backlash for it from all sections of society.

@@montaguebarnabasltd I think the biggest issue for the slow take up of Windows 11 was the extreme requirements expected of hardware, it's basically windows 10 with AI and Ads so i can't understand why any Windows 10 running computer couldn't run it. Do not buy them and sell them if you own one. They are quite literally ticking time bombs and it's all down to apples crappy board design, the SSD controller is right next to the air intake which draws in moisture.
