I think Apple M1 is reaching that age where it's old enough to be cheap, but new enough to be powerful.

2014/15 rMBP is a very solid machine as a daily driver, especially if you upgrade to NVMe storage and use OCLP to run macOS Monterey. Not sure about the 2015, but my 2014's speakers are trash though. Very tinny sounding. My previous 2011 model had much better speakers. Not a deal breaker for me, as everything else functions very well.

i just bought an 2013 mb pro 15" for under 200€, it´s ridiculously spec´d (original 1gb ssd, 16gig ram, the fastest i7 and dedicated gpu). best thing is it´s absolutly mint looking and will only need a freesh battery (holds up 3 hours light use at the moment). But i totally agree to your reasoning and also have the base spec´d m1 air as a daily machine and its perfect, such an elegant and efficient machine. if you buy intel insist on absolutly bargains otherwise you will get burned..

I’ve spotted a couple of videos popping up on YT where people have found out how to replace SSD’s/memory on M1 MacBook Air. There’s even a couple of articles dating back to 2020 saying that techs in China have been able to do it too. I guess at some point in the (near?) future we will start seeing this service being offered as tools and techniques are created to make the upgrades more ‘accessible’.

I understand his point of view; we are already at M3, but this applies much more to the American reality. As a Brazilian, for example, I bought a 2019 MacBook Pro, 32GB of RAM + i9 8 cores 16 threads, with 1TB SSD and a 5500m with 4GB VRAM, for a bargain at R$5000 (in comparison, this model was R$29000 when it was released), plus it only had 90 battery cycles-a real steal! These machines are extremely powerful, and for my use case, better than the Apple Silicon M series, because they have the x86_64 architecture which handles Docker much faster (due to better virtualization support). It’s not a mistake to buy an Intel series MacBook; the prices have plummeted, and both you and I need to take advantage of this. Unfortunately, Apple consumers tend to think that the latest release is the best and perhaps that the older ones are BAD by definition. This is not true. Yes, it's true that the operating system support will soon end, but it's a machine that will last for many good years. Consider getting a highly configured 2019 MacBook Pro. Also, understand that this "cheapness" might only apply to the United States, and in other parts of the world, the M1 is still extremely expensive. In the end, the right choice is the one that is within your budget.

You can’t buy a 5K monitor for this price and you get a whole computer!! IMO they are great value for money, because of that screen and with OCLP you can install Sonoma on them without problem. They are plenty powerful for everyday task, because of 4core CPUs.

I thought the 24” display would be a downgrade from my previous 27” setup but I really don’t even notice the smaller size after adjusting the display settings a little bit. I do hope they offer a “Pro” iMac in the future with more Ram options and more GPU cores, but he 16 GB M1 is doing the job pretty well for now.

I do collect Macs and sure got a bunch of Intel Macbooks, Mac Minis and iMacs but you are so very right. They all can't compete with the Apple Silicon. I also got an M1 Pro Macbook for serious work and it lasts me the whole day. Sometimes, for fun I bring an old Macbook. When I only need to display some PDF files at a meeting or other light work that is not mission critical. The thing is, old Macbooks still look very modern and sleek but the power is gone. Apples design and choice of materials really made them timeless. The 2015 Retina Macbooks were incredible at their time. There was no serious replacement until the i9 came but then all Intel got crushed by the M1. With Apple, there is always the right time to buy one. You bought the 2015, you were able to get 7 or 8 good years out of it. Same will happen when you got a MBP M1 Pro in 2021. If you bought an i9 in 2019, you only got 2 - 3 years and now you don't want to sell it for 600$. People still think they have a high value laptop but its not true. I've seen M1 Pros going for 1000$ used and they are so much better and they basically come with an XDR display on a Laptop. The prices for MB up till 2012 should be 100$ or better even lower (sure 100$ for a 2012 15" with good specs) and a high spec 2015 should be around 150$, not more. Lets be honest, even the best Retinas (2015) get 10 years old next year. I've yet to find a replacement Battery that is really good, like they were new from apple. Most batteries you buy are new but old. I think that will really kill the use as a laptop in the long run.

Would love to get your two cents on this. I'm currently deciding on either a 2019 15" macbook pro i7/16/512 or an M1 macbook air 8/256, both going for around 400 USD. I do understand that the M1 is tons faster and will likely be supported for longer, but what I find appealing with the 2019 mbp is the 16gb ram (i find that I use this up often on other non-macs) and the larger screen size (not an absolute priority but its def preferred). What do you think I should go for? PS. I'm currently on a 2009 macbook pro with a core 2 duo lol so any of the two is guaranteed to blow my socks off. Was on a thinkpad a few weeks ago (i5/16/512) but it died on me so I'm going mac

Why do you buy "constantly new stuff"? I am building my own PCs since the 90s and learned this: as a gamer, the only thing you more or less regularly upgrade is the graphic card, and even that wasn't a topic any more in recent years when games started to align to the performance of current gen gaming consoles by design. These days, you can run any game with a AMD 5700 or an NVIDIA 1070. But eventually Macs are nothing you use for gaming. When upgrading my PC, I noticed that the most benefit over the years originate in switching from HDDs to SSDs and in switching from 8 GB RAM to 16 GB RAM, which I run on all my machines and never saw anything justifying to upgrade RAM further. I also learned that my needs are met by 1 TB of permanent storage. So that is a config I ran for years on a hackintosh: 16 GB RAM, 1 TB SSD. I also learned that doing a major upgrade of the CPU is essentially a complete rebuild of the PC interior: you need a new motherboard, new (as faster) RAM, a more powerful energy supply and a better CPU cooler. You can keep the chassis, its fans and the permanent storage unless you want to benefit from faster access speed like PCI-E instead of SATA. I ran a hackintosh since macOS Sierra but bought my first Apple computer (since the Apple IIe) when Apple moved to Apple Silicon. That machine, a mini M1, configured based on the parameters established above from experience, supports my work (Software development) for more than three years now and there is no need to upgrade anything. I will run this until there are no macOS updates anymore for it. And there is still no pressure to ask for more RAM than 16 GB or more permanent storage but 1 TB. And with those parameters Apple Silicon Macs are still competitive in pricing. Despite Apples unreasonably looking upgrade price tags.
@PvtAnonymous
@PvtAnonymous 15 дней назад
buddy, the computers you're talking about are 12 years old at this point. Most modern apps don't work on them anymore and they are starting to get to an age where the capacitors will fail at one point - and good luck repairing that on your own. Not even speaking about recent macOS versions, which you can get with OpenCore, but will run "suboptimal" to say the least with the natural limitations of memory swap (SSD even in RAID will be too slow) and the hard capped 16 GBs of RAM. So for anything more than mail and typing documents these will not make you happy.

A 2017 MacBook Pro is 7 years old. No one is talking about “constantly buying new stuff” we are talking about the fact if you buy a 7+ year old laptop it’s not a great deal and probably at end of life. I just got my M3 Pro MacBook Pro which was an upgrade from the 2019 MacBook Pro. I got 5 years out of it and probably won’t upgrade the M3 Pro for another 5 years. Two laptops in ten years isn’t “constantly buying new stuff”

Also about to buy a 2015 or 2017 MB Air with a 2TB SSD for a mobile Movie machine and email terminal for an elderly relative. Biggest reason I have not got to Apple Silicon...the ridiculous price for storage. 2TB is the bare minimum for my need. I do not want to lug around portable SSD drives. My daily work machine as an IT Manager and Graphics Pro is a 2013 MacPro 10-core. ZERO problems. Bosses M1 Max MBP only feel faster is boot time and dull tasks like copying. In Creative Cloud...not so much of a difference. One day, when the price is right, I will upgrade to an M1 Max MBP 16. Prices are getting there. Mine will have to have a 4TB or 8TB SSD. Same with a Studio. It would be awesome if Apple made their devices with a super fast 256 SSD that is OS/Apps only and then a slot for storage for files. Have you ever restored from TimeMachine a full 2TB Boot Drive. TAKES FOR EVER. Learned my lesson. Now I always partition. 1 for OS and Applications, another for files.

Intel Macs are still worth buying and have their place imo, especially with the price drops since the M-series Macs took over. Graphics are obviously where they fall short, but quad core i7's are still plenty capable for many daily tasks. If you're worried about thermals/battery life, there are apps to mitigate that like Macs FanControl, Turbo Boost Switcher, gfxCardStatus and CPUSetter. I run my rMBP with only 2 physical cores active with Hyper Threading most of the time and its fine for light stuff like web browsing, email, movies, productivity, etc. When I need more power for something like gaming, I just adjust my settings. And as a bonus, I can boot into Windows 10 whenever I need it.

Open Core won't work with M-chips, so I'm dreading the day I have to attempt to upgrade, when the App Store finally disallows app binaries submitted from the last supported Intel version of MacOS. This'll likely be Sonoma, in about 2 years time 😬😬😬

It is no mystery that bootcamp drivers can be flakey and are not going to last. Apple is not going to provide Windows 11/12 BC drivers, as they are not supporting the platform anymore. I've been a PC user since the beginning of my computer interaction, and I also always preferred AMD. I loved Apple products but they were out of reach price wise and for the performance you could get a lot more on PC. Also I could build up to that performance. Close to when Apple Silicon was released I started looking at the reality of my PC builds, usually by the time I would upgrade a GPU, I'd have to upgrade the CPU and the Motherboard to take advantage of the GPU upgrade given my low frequency of upgrades. So upgradability wasn't really a thing for me as it turned out - also I started to learn its better to get the tool that gets the thing done that I want to get done, than building the tool that gets the jobs done that I want to get done. Then M1. I needed a better monitor for my photography and video grading - a good color screen with hardware color profiles would cost me about two thirds of what a M1 Air basemodel would go for. Plus I wanted portability for tethered photoshoots. I've been on a base model M1 Air preowned for the last 3 years now and the thing is absolutely amazing, all this power AND it's is silly portable.

My main computer is an overkill M1 Max Mac Studio, but I have plenty of vintage Intel Macs that are still very capable. I use my heavily-upgraded 2010 and 2013 Mac Pros for Photoshop and 32-bit games, and I use a mid-2012 MacBook Pro (upgraded with two 500 GB SSDs and 16 GB of RAM) and a 2013 MacBook Air (upgraded with a 500 GB NVMe SSD) as work commute laptops. As a writer, editor and light on-the-go gamer, these and other Intel Macs are still fast and practical. It's funny - many view the 2023 M2 Ultra Mac Pro as redundant, in that you can get almost identical performance in the much-cheaper M2 Ultra Mac Studio, but I think the 2023 Mac Pro makes the 2019 Intel Xeon Mac Pro look even worse. The 2023 Mac Pro goes all-in on Apple Silicon: it can run native ARM applications, Intel apps through Rosetta and iOS apps through the ARM architecture, and thus has vast app compatibility. The 2019 Mac Pro, however, can't run iOS apps due to the Intel architecture, and can't even run 32-bit apps due to Catalina and beyond dropping 32-bit support. To me, the 2019 Mac Pro is an objectively powerful and very upgradeable Mac that just can't run much in the grand scheme of things.

Human Revolution is my third-favourite game of all time (between Life is Strange at #3 and Fallout: New Vegas at #1), but since it's 32-bit, you can't play it on 10.15 Catalina and up. :( I'm also genuinely angry at Valve for not updating the Mac versions of the Half-Life and Portal games to 64-bit. They knew Catalina would drop 32-bit app support, and they've had over four damn years at this point. To me, this isn't a matter of profitability for Valve; this is a matter of respecting their players and allowing them to keep playing the games they paid for. However, the fact that the new machines are imposible to repair, even on things that are likely to break like screen(paired to the motherboard) or keyboard, and their limitations (you can’t game, can’t use Linux, no eGPU) make me hesitant about buying another Mac. On my machine, I installed Linux and windows for gaming (I know it has little power for that, but it is possible and light games run well, like valorant. And you have eGPU support). It does everything I need. Would I like more power and battery life? Sure! but not at the expenses apple is imposing. Okay, here is the deal. If you're planned use is streaming, basic office work and web browsing an Intel updated to Sonoma via OCLP will be fine. Heck, Linux runs really well on these intel laptops and Windows works great via bootcamp. The uploader is also correct in that Sonoma is likely to be the last MacOS version to work on Intel. That said, I know a LOT of people who still use Catalina. I've not heard of any security issues even though it and Big Sur have been discontinued. I'm not saying its a great idea to use either but plenty of folks do with no issues. The M series machines are fantastic but I don't use Final Cut. I don't do high end Photo-Shop nor do I need blazing speed from my SSD or processor. Price wise? A 2019 Macbook Pro 16" can be found for under $600. A 2019 13" unit for under $300.

Being in the IT security business as a professional I can't stress enough the importance of running the most recent OS software. If you can afford to do not care, your choice. But I discourage that. problem with apple silicon macs are that you can't repair them at all without expensive equipment, not to mention not being able to buy parts, such as NANDs. intel macs are more repairable, especially older models. I will never buy an apple silicon mac until they fix this problem. OCLP allows me to run the latest os on my 2015 MBP

You say it happened when they went from PowerPC to intel but I add in “and when they went from Motorola 68xxx processors too” see: MacOS 8.5

It’s true. They hadn’t used Motorola chips for long in their laptops… More about that in my next video, actually!

I bought a 27” late 2014 iMac for £90 including keyboard and trackpad 2. I spent a little time overhauling it and installed Ventura on OCLP. I’m a happy bunny. Oh btw. I do have a Mac Mini M1 as well. But you know what. I prefer the old intel most of the time 🤣🤣.

I mean why not get a 2019 mac and use bootcamp for a few more years? Not the worst idea to get a couple more years out of it if you don't need Mac OS

Me: I need virtualization on a daily basis and the Apple Silicon is not up to scratch yet. My employer bought a refurb from Apple (i7 8 cores/32GB RAM/512GB SSD, 4 Thunderbolt ports), which does the job just fine. I'd wish it had better cooling though.

What exactly are you doing with virtualization if you don't mind me asking? I have a fully loaded M2 Air and regularly use Linux VM's, Windows 11 Enterprise and BSD. They run beautifully. I feel like the Windows 11 runs faster than it does on my desktop.

@@SintaxBSD. I run Kali Linux, and occasionally Windows when I need to use certain niche software. UTM on Apple Silicon does not cut it. Colleagues tried with Fusion and Parallel and were unimpressed.

I have a 16 GB 2012 i7 , 16GB 2014 i5, and 16GB 2020 M1. I like my M1 the best, but the 2012 i7 is much more enjoyable than the 2014 i5.

Anyone buying a Mac older than 2012 is making a huge mistake simply because that was the last year that Apple made computers that were completely upgradable. I the retina‘s and so forth Kingsolver components that are quite difficult or almost impossible to upgrade. As much as you might like macOS in the Apple ecosystem, you should consider also the options of being able to maintain and repair your computer by replacing memories, Hard drives in other parts. With modern max, that is impossible. Worse yet, you will be throwing your money into the garbage.

6:38 To answer your question, the SSD. That is the problem apple silicon devices, the SSD is still a wear part and will fail, even worse the "bios" runs on the internal ssd so when the SSD dies, the laptop becomes a paper weight. Even if the controller dies first, that doesn't help either. Edit: I think apple silicon devices are cool and I really like them, but pretending the SSD problem will affect you especially on base model devices with less ram and storage as you increase the writes to the disk.

You can put Linux on Intel macs, as they are just Intel machines with particular hardware. So they aren't going be that good for running new MacOS but you can recycle them as Linux machines.

I guess they won't drop Intel just yet. The last Macs with Intel were released in 2020, that would be a VERY short support period. 1-2 years to go.
