my sister bought m1 air. I borrowed it for 1 week for rust development. The compilation time is so good, I love it. My Lenovo i5 takes about 3-4 mins for incremental builds while m1 takes around 20-30 seconds. I'll buy the next generation for myself, and I'll wait till full Linux support has arrived. Gentoo users are going to be so happy.

It's all true. Every bit of it. Switched to this machine for video editing and have loved every minute of it. Agreed with the fans. I am in super HOT environment. No AC and while the fan does turn on 100+ degree temps when working with FCP or transcoding media...way better than other Macs that turn fans on from the start screen. It is a "cold" machine. Great review.

The MacBook Pro has been a great machine for me, never had my fans turn on since I bought it. One issue I had is with the WiFi connectivity, which was easily fixed with a reboot. I still need to drag my windows PC around to run certain programs but I’m really hopeful that more apps will get a ARM version and Windows on ARM will be finally fully backwards compatible with x86. Most shortcuts in MacOS are easy to reach and to remember, and spotlight search is so much better than the Windows search tool. I was worried I wouldn’t know how to navigate MacOS but it has been very user friendly.

@@wolfy8006 There is no bootcamp on M1 Macintoshes. Parallels will only run ARM versions of OSes. I don't know how you could specifically invoke Rosetta to let you run the intel version of Parallels. It should be possible, one would think?! Run Parallels under Rosetta then install your x86 version of Windows, and install translation software on that. Better yet, clone the hard drive of the computer that has Windows using Acronis or Macrium and restore the image to the Parallels Desktop VM hard drive running under Rosetta.

On the note of Python libraries, there are a few that need AVX instruction sets to compile or run, and Rosetta does not support AVX. So if you need libs that use AVX, you might want to hold off to see if they get a native version or if Apple will add support for AVX instruction sets.

My worry would be that the new ones can’t dual-boot Windows. I’ve tried using VM’s in the past but when developing real-time things like a CAN bus interface it just couldn’t keep up. I suppose it would be nice to have the MacBook as a personal laptop and a Windows laptop for work things but right now on my 2014 MBP I have everything in one device and it’s pretty handy.

I never liked the touch bar, mostly due to lack of ESC key, but seeing that they've now re-added the ESC key I might get on board again. Has anyone got any use for the touch bar or is it just in the way? I know personally I barely look at my keyboard, too much muscle memory, and the touch bar doesn't work very well with muscle memory.

I would say it has its uses for general usage, but if you are mainly coding on it, then yes, physical keys are way better. No haptic feedback is another big issue with it.

I am considering getting an M1 if it had support for Linux, because of its power and efficiency, but there are some things that I think are issues: - Repairs and upgrades- basically none. To repair it, you need to take it to a professional and get expensive parts replaced. As I own a ThinkPad, I can open it up and macguyver a fix for basically any problem, and use it for the rest of the week in school before considering a more permanent solution (not that this happens often because of its reliability) -Planned obsolescence- Apple is notorious for this- If I pay over 3k CAD for a computer, it would be nice for it to last at least 6 or 7 years. My Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon gen 1 is still going strong after 10 years, over 10000 hours of use. It surprisingly holds up well in modern applications, with an i7, 8gb RAM, and an SSD it feels really snappy in everyday tasks, and even runs the very demanding things I work on, like the AI computer visions applications and data analysis. The MacBook my dad got in 2015 for about the same price this was in 2012 is unusable with mac os, but is somewhat usable with Linux installed on it. You can't revive on old M1 Mac with linux in the future, unless they implement linux support. - Cost: it costs about 2x as much as gaming grade devices with similar power, and with my limited budget as a high school student experimenting with AI stuff, that's kind of a problem Other than that, I think the M1 Mac is an amazing computer. The thought of high power with high efficiency is epic to me, as my laptop battery lasts about 1 hour and 30 minutes on a good day, the fan goes like a jet turbine under any load more than 2 chrome tabs and spotify, and a few times the CPU temperature has exceeded 100 degrees C, and the keyboard has reached over 50 degrees under long stretches of programming or video editing, at which point I needed to put it in the fridge. it is time for me to get a new computer, and I would get an M1 MacBook pro if it had linux support and was a few hundred dollars cheaper, or I will probably settle for a mid tier gaming laptop, as the market right now is too bad to buy parts to build a PC

I think M1 is revolutionary for mobile computing, the king of performance per watt. That being said, was quite put out by the fact that it meant no more dual booting Linux or Windows. As a tinkerer and hacker in training, I need that added flexibility. I don’t like needing to rely on VMs for important parts of my work, and the fact that Windows x86 is simply out of the question was upsetting. I guess, there are limits as to what we can do at this point. Sadly, some of these limitations are creeping into Windows laptop world as well. The introduction of TPM 2 and Secure Boot requirements in Windows 11 make a Linux participation and dual boot much less feasible. It appears I will just have to get comfortable with VMs and WSL. I simply cannot afford to ditch Windows all together 🤦🏻‍♂️

@matthewsjardine

@@peter2485 No stress, I am happy to answer. Unfortunately, that will never be a great solution for me. I am currently working to become and IT Pro, and then cybersecurity incident responder. In both those roles, it requires a lot of knowledge of both platforms. I need to be up-to-date on more than just the basics. The only way I know how to do that effectively is to be an avid user of both. An exclusive mindset in this field will only serve to hinder my performance overall.

Good review but you didn’t mentioned one of the biggest down side of the M1. It doesn’t support dual monitors natively. Which docking station are you using in order to have it working with your dual monitors set up? Cheers!
@theencryptedpartition4633
@theencryptedpartition4633 2 года назад
I would not even buy docking stations, I would just invest into ultra wide monitor. Second monitor on the dock works like 1080p with 24-30Hz

@@theencryptedpartition4633 It is a matter of preference. I enjoy dual screen for coding and feel more productive. But I was saying that because I know his previous set was a dual monitor (unless it changed) 🙂.
