I agree with you. I order the 16" 24 core with 32GB and 1TB SSD. Having too big of a screen has never been an issue for me. I remember having a 17" MacBook back in the day, It was never a problem carrying it around.
I’m coming from an 18” MSI laptop, so a 16” MacBook wouldn’t bother me. I don’t game on computers as much anymore so I don’t need a gaming PC. I like having the extra screen real estate to multitask too.
That makes sense. What doesn’t make sense is saying in the same breath that you’re bringing an Anker wireless charger to plug into that USB-C cable just to charge your iPhone…
@@AV84USA Why would you bring a wireless charger, and where did that even come up? Obviously, he has to bring a charger of some kind, so he just leaves the magsafe cable at home and brings just the type-c cable an the charger. Then he can charge all his devices one at a time.
I am pro dev and I got the 14 max 32 ram, 1 tb, 24 core and I have never heard the fan and never find it warm. All this while pushing my code editor with about 8 Gb of ram and docker containers pushing 12 Gb of ram. It's like it's not even doing anything. The maximum swap memory I have been able to have it use is about 200 Mb. And I combine this with a 20000 mah powerbank and it gives me about 6 odd hours of power. So I start the day at 100% and end the day at 100% battery while working on a desktop grade machine remotely away from the desk. By the way I am in India and the ambient temperatures are higher and it really does not matter to these machines.
That’s good to know! That’s the model I went with as well. When he said it was hot and fans kicking on I got nervous. I’m running intense music production software and I’m so use to my computer burning up lol. Can’t wait to get my hands on this. Order won’t ship until early February 😭
@@bluelouie399 Yeah it's been about couple of months for me with this machine now and it's been great, I actually purchased an Apple Care+, I usually don't since I upgrade almost every year. But with this machine I feel it could easily last 2-5 years. Hope you get your order soon!
I have the 13 inch M1 Pro 8GB Ram 512 SSD. I upgraded to a 16 inch M1 ProMax 64 GB 4 TB SSD. I did not understand the processing power needed for photo and video production initially and found out my first investment did not cut it in that regard. I kept the 13 inch Pro and love traveling with it...compact...light...really love it. The 16 inch stays home.
Great video, Jerry. You ended up exactly where I thought you should end up based on the use case you described. The question of 14 inch versus 16 inch is something I’ve been struggling with myself. I went into the thought process pretty set on the 14 inch model. It’s lighter. It’s smaller. It’s clearly easier to travel with. But it’s not easier to use if you were working with Lightroom or Photoshop or Premiere Pro. As I thought about this, I realized that when I use my current 13 inch laptop for these tasks, I don’t really take the work seriously. The laptop tides me over until I can get back to my workstation. But the 16 inch is actually large enough that if I had to work remotely for an extended period of time, I could do it. So, to my surprise, I ended up going with the 16 inch despite all of the size and weight advantages that come with the 14. Of course, everyone has their own use case. This is just mine.
Any ‘real’ productivity will require a much larger display. At that point, there are so many options today that you are not restricted to just using Apple displays. Most higher end monitors are now compliant with Apple’s DCI-P3 color space. I personally own the Asus PG32UQX 1500HDR 4k 32 inch monitor and love it. Whatever you decide, you can’t go wrong with either Apple MacBook Pro model.
@@Great_America To be clear, I wasn't suggesting that either choice was bad. I was suggesting that there are tradeoffs, as Jerry pointed out, and that one fit me better than the other. Like you, I edit on a 30+" monitor (three, actually) so a 16" laptop screen isn't be my preference either when I have a choice. :-)
@@HypraNT I've never once second guessed my choice, Demirkan. 95% of my use is at my desk where the larger 16-inch display works as an additional but not primary monitor. When I travel domestically by car or RV, it is no problem to take the laptop along plus an iPad Pro which I use as a second monitor. On a recent trip to India, which involved a bunch of flights and constant moving around, I left the laptop at home and carried an iPad Pro. The laptop definitely would have been a burden. That said, I wouldn't have taken a 14-inch either. (I've considered picking up a 13-inch MacBook Air to use specifically for air travel but I haven't pulled the trigger yet. I keep hoping Apple will upgrade iPadOS to make it more useable with external storage.)
Very good and reasonable overall review. And I like your final purchase choice, too. The M1Max is strictly for super-power users. Ditto for the 16-inch. If a user plugs-into a high-quality external monitor for desktop docking and video editing or other heavy-duty workflows, the 14-inch should be more than enough machine. This is especially true for road warriors or at least people who want to carry their laptop to a variety of sitting locations (recliner, couch, conference rooms, etc.) and do not need a larger screen while away from the desk setup. But if the laptop display is most often going to be your primary display, or maybe you don't connect to an external monitor at all, the 16-inch is an extremely portable desktop computer replacement. AS FOR MAGSAFE: It depends on how you plan to use your machine. If you need the express-charging, MagSafe is the way to go. The unanswered question I have is how many aftermarket USB-C chargers are out there that can adequately power either of these laptops and still offer a super-portable form factor. If you're a road warrior and you want maximum charging and express charging, it's probably a good idea to buy more than one of Apple's extra-cost-option MagSafe power supplies and put one in your travel case and one in your home charging station.
I was going to get the 14” but I then I started working out. My bulging muscles allowed me to pick up the 16” mbpro with ease. When placing the 16” on my lap, my humongous thighs made the laptop appear small. Conclusion : buy the 14” if that 1 lb difference is difficult for your body to handle. Or work out and become a beast of a man, then you can easily pick up that big boy with little effort.
16-inch M1 Pro w/ 16GB & 1TB for me. I just don’t want to spend more but I want all the features in these machines that are NOT in those M1 machines. Nice vid.
I got a 16" Max, 64GB RAM, 32 Core, 2TB SSD. I largely use it around my home. I keep my machines for about 6 years, so should work fine. I traded in my 2015 15" machine, which has similar ports.
I use my MBP mostly around the house, so I really like the fast charge capability afforded by the 140 W power adapter when used with the MagSafe adapter. That said, When I travel, I’ll probably just carry the smaller 96 W USB-C power adapter I have left over from the 2019 16 inch MBP I traded in to get my new 16 inch M1 Pro MBP.
it seems dramatic to not use magsafe simply because you don't want to carry it around while traveling lol. I usually leave my magsafe at home (near dining table) and it's useful in this space specifically due to the trip hazard. I also have a USB-C which is used on the go. But no harm in having a static charger that protects it from being dropped
As a visually impaired individual the magsafe for me who trips over cords a ton due to not seeing them quick enough. It makes a ton of sense as it wont cause me to have to pay to get my laptop repaired so often.
Yeah same configuration that I’m planning to buy Coming from 13” M1 MacBook Pro with 8GB of RAM 32GB RAM gonna be more than enough to future proof yourself And to run windows through emulation
Thank you for this great review! Very helpful as I'm deciding between the 14 and 16 right now. I was intent on the 16 inch, but after watching this, I may go for the 14 inch as fan noise (if any) doesnt bother me much because I am usually working at my computer wearing noise canceling headphones. I also use external monitors along with an external keyboard and wireless mouse and hardly will be physically touching the Macbook itself on my desk, so the warmth of the machine wont be a big deal to me either.
I opted for 16 inch M1 Pro with 32 GB memory and 1 TB SSD. I really prefer the larger screen size and the slightly better cooling system. Weight/bulk isn’t much of an issue because I mostly use my MBP around the house (and did so even pre-pandemic). For travel, it fits nicely in my Sutter Slim Backpack from Waterfield Designs and does not feel overly heavy in that backpack, certainly not heavy enough to convince me to go with the smaller screen size and lighter weight of the 14 inch. I toyed with a larger SSD but opted to do my video editing off a fast SSD (Samsung T7 or SanDisk Extreme both in 1 TB size), leaving my internal SSD free for other uses. So far this has worked well but I’m not doing especially sophisticated video editing, sonI’m not pushing the speed envelope. YMMV.
Have ordered the same an hour ago) Was considering on buying 14 m1 max (24 core), but decided that most of time the coolers will be turned on and the whole laptop will be warmer, and that's why went for MBP 16" M1 Pro, 32 ram, but 512 gb cause there wasn't 1tb in the store. Also had thoughts about 16" m1 max 1tb, but think that m1 pro is enough for me at the moment. And if I'll need more power in future - it would be better to sell this one and buy the new next year's version for example. It wouldn't be too expensive and having a new model is more pleasant than taking 1 computer for 5 years+ P.s. I'm doing color grading in Davinci Resolve and for the projects have also ordered samsung t7 (1tb)
I just can’t justify the weight of the 16 inch. I’ve had the 13 inch M1 for a year now and I got used to it. I’ll be opting for the 14 inch. Feels like i’m cheating myself.
Thanks for the detailed, ‘real life’ evaluation. Super helpful and well done. I still need to see/feel the 14” vs 16” to get a sense of what the portability difference is. Using the machine all day, a larger screen is going to be better. However, if the size/weight is really too much then the decision is made. My business applications won’t really see a difference between the CPU’s but I know that faster extends the longevity. As everyone, cost will be a factor only if I buy it vs my company. In any case, the ROÍ of the laptop in any configuration is so great, the price justification is negligible. (I’m much stingier if I pay, however).
I went 16 BUT I had a chance to mess with both, and I have to say if I didn’t need the better speakers and larger screen, the 14” is so compact and nice… I’d go 14” it’s nicely compact and the screen still feels bigger than you would expect
My first Apple product was the 17" MacBook Pro Core 2 Duo that I bought back in 2007. I LOVED the unit because the screen size was amazing for a lap top. Even though it weighed 6.8 lbs, I never was bothered by the weight. I kept using the unit until the software couldn't be upgraded. Over the past few years it was sitting in the garage but I recently turned the machine into a Linux system to play around. The cost different between a M1 Max and M1 Pro is only $200. To me, it seems the additional performance is worth at least that amount. I ordered a 16" MBP M1 Max 32G RAM and 1TB SSD.
@@jasonnowwhat5041 The user is going to buy a 14” M1 Pro 10 core 16 GPU with 32GB RAM. The M1 Max version of this configuration is only $200 more. To me, this is worth it.
@@beachliving3127 I’m only considering 16” models that are found in stock so all of the preconfigured 16” models. I’m so tempted to buy the max only because I easily found the limits of the M1 last year with some of the projects I edit and I only use proxies so not getting the highest end model makes me a bit nervous. I use quite a few plugins within final cut and most reviewers are just slapping a lut on a clip and not really stressing the symptoms.
First: THanks for the video! It really cleared some things up for me. Second: Macsafe....I lost 2 macbooks through tripping by third parties. Therefore I am sooooo glad to have it back, soon.
Amazing video just like all your others, thank you for the pragmatism and vision of out the "video editors youtubers" box, I mean, 99% of us simple don't care about video editing.
I'm so split - I think M1 Pro with 32GB ram is my sweet spot too, but once you add more memory to the M1 Pro , the upsell the to Max isn't too much extra! I think M1 Max 32GB and 2TB SSD (trading in a 2019 i9 with 4TB SSD and 64GB Ram)
I am still a desktop person. I am waiting for a M1 Max Mini. If I ever get a laptop again I may just get a M1 Air w/16GB RAM. Don't want to spend too much money on things I don't often use.
Great video Jerry! I went 16" Max 32/24/2TB. I have a 2019 16" and personally like the larger size since it rarely leaves the house. For a travel companion I take the 12.9 iPad Pro.
That is exactly where I am Jim, currently running on an XPS17 (the 13" M1 just is too small for my daily) and mine rarely leaves the house, I might sneak it into a backpack when I go stay overnight somewhere, but that is a rarity these days. I have long hummed and hawed I am not taking the Max because I do not need that kind of power, I need that kind of screen and a system that does not have the fans screaming.
@@aelaan12 I struggled with the Pro vs Max decision. When I looked at it from where I was, with an upgrade to 32 GB of memory, it was only another $200 to get the Max. Maybe better resale down the road??Big picture viewed over multiple years I decided $200 wasn't that big a deal. Might branch into more video in the future so I'll have the system to support that and it should cut thru large RAW files like a hot knife thru butter! I'm with you, screaming fans are not good!
@araradrew Good common sense rant. Looks like we think a lot alike. I actually ordered and canceled 3 times before arriving at this configuration. Pretty sure I’m going to be happy with it.
@araradrew resale value may be higher but maybe not. If there are very limited workflows that can actually take advantage of the features of Max then there may not be a resale market willing to pay it. Luke Miani has a good video from a couple months ago about resale value.
Exactly ! Just switched from an 2TB 16 GB Air to an 16 Max 64GB.. and honestly outside from video the only thing I felt was different was Battery life (..worse😂) . BUT it’s a great screen. But for , say, Audio production- unless u really use a lot of hugh sample libraries, You won’t feel a difference
I haven't even unwrapped the charger and MagSafe cable yet from the box of my 16" MBP. Been charging with USB-C and my older MBP charger that was already plugged in!!
Huh? You complain about the inconvenience of bringing an extra cable because you can charge everything with a USB-C cable, and then 1 second later you talk about bringing an Anker wireless charger to plug into your usb c cord simply to charge your iPhone instead of plugging in your usb c directly into your iPhone. 9:43 I question your thought process…
Hahaha, your first good was like with hesitation but your second was much more convincing. Bought a base model 14 for my daughter and she was amazed by the iMovie conversion speed, something that will have her hours for the pre-school kids she’s teaching. I had made a very good choice, and the kids parents were very happy with the output
I don’t even need more performance from my current 13” M1 MacBook Pro. I really wish Apple would update the design to be more like the new 14” and 16” but that is the only thing I can think of that would make my current computer better. The configuration I got (M1, 16GB Ram, 1TB SSD) is plenty for my workflow. I dock it with a 5K Thunderbolt Display when I need more screen space so I don’t need nor want a larger laptop.
Wanted to get the 16inch pro 32 GB but then I saw the 64 GB M1 max on discount literally being just 100$ more expensive than the Pro I initially wanted. So I went for the the M1 Max.
Magsafe is about peace of mind from accidents..... you'll wish you had it when somebody trips over your cable. (although maybe not with these new batteries, you won't be charging as often)
Great and pragmatic review! I've got a 14" with M1Max on order. Probably a FOMO influenced decision, but I sometimes do development, and I wanted to be sure of having enough power to run multiple virtual machines.
The Max is graphics power only, and the ability to power more than two external screens. Absolutely not necessary for development (unless you develop 3D models).
@@robpawlikowski4020 If it's still on order or just arrived you could swap it out for the base model, or the base model with the CPU upgrade (20% faster for multi-processor tasks which use the whole power of the computer, I believe X-Code does). What's interesting is that even the M1 MacBook Air is equally fast for single-core tasks. All the M1 Macs score 1750 for single processor tasks in Geekbench. But the M1 MacBook Air and the 13" M1 Pro only allow a single external monitor which is not enough (for me).
@@AlecKinnear The base one wont work for his use case. We need at least 32gb for development. I had to return the base 16 due it was slow down noticeably and went for 14 inch max 32 core 64 gb 2tb since it was in stock in the store.
@@tonyhuynh6789 For development, I can easily believe you need 32GB. 16GB was inadequate for mixed development and multimedia work for me. The Max graphics upgrade would only be necessary for development in the case a developer needs more than two external monitors plus the built-in monitor. Development would be fine on the base 14" but one would need to find one with 32GB of RAM. Relatively speaking, even the Max version is a lot of computer for the money and unheard of performance in a portable computer.
It's not the ram that's giving you a boost in performance, because as long as you've got enough of it - it's not going to benefit you, which doesn't apply to the other way around. The first thing that caught my eye when I compared the two models was the much beefier charger of the 16'. The 16' comes with a 140w watts charger while the 14' comes with either a 67w or a 96w. Apple must've raised the 16's power limit because it can handle the heat better due to it's larger chassis - or you can look at it the other way around and say you're getting a gimped version of the M1-max chip in the 14'.
I watched another video about the power usage on MaxTech I believe and it’s true, Apple does throttle the 14” by I think they reported about 20% because of the lack of heat distribution.
MacBook Pro M1 base + 1 T, or 16 base ( but its a desktop... so what you really need is new mac-mini cheaper with GPUs). I would have to be crazy to pay for max. It's like a car. I will consider new MacBook Air or new MacBookPro 13/14 (cheaper) with M2. When you work home you want big external monitor anyway so what the point to have great monitor on the laptop which is close because its better to external keyboard and mouse.
Thank you for this wonderful video. I ordered the MacBook Pro M1 Pro 14 Inch today, via the Apple Store app refurbished section. And I was wondering what it would look like when it arrives; thanks to you, I now know that it should look like a brand new device and function like a brand new device. 😊
Thank you, your video helped me a lot on deciding which one to choose. Btw, what keyboard is that you are using, it appears at around min. 3? Thank you
One of the best basic overviews of the new M1max MacBook Pros on YT. Thanks. I ordered the 14 maxed out version but only 1TB storage. Thinking I should have gotten the 2TB?? Can’t wait to get it. 2 month waitlist 😬 is a bummer.
I totally agree. My only regret is choosing the 16gb model instead of 32gb. However Apple is ripping off people with this upgrades so I guess I am going to get used to.
@@juanmillaruelo7647 I don't think so. M2 will probably have slower SSDs (on pair with M1, but certainly slower than M1 Pro/Max), only one TB4 controller for all ports, it will be capped on GPU - therefore, 32 GB will be available option, albeit expensive one. There's space to accomodate users. But Apple being Apple - there's also space for 15" MacBook Air......
I dont' understand why you would order the M1 Pro over the M1 Max when you are configuring with 32Gb memory, since there is only CA$200 difference between the two. Is marginally lower heat and more battery life more important than significant performance gain, or am I missing something?
You have to do very GPU intensive work to see any performance gain. If you never do that, 200 dollars less and more battery is worth more than unused extra GPU power.
I think it comes down to battery life and heat for me I don’t beee the GPU for what I do even with $200. For resale I think there will be others with the same thoughts.
I've watched a few videos that make the same point as you do regarding performance. Published specs (more CPU; more RAM) and bench tests are not backed up by performance which is orders of magnitude better. Not everyone needs processing power only for creative purposes (4/8k video; 3D; etc) - we need to process large amounts of data and formulae, and these new MBPs do not seem to substantially raise the bar in that respect. Disappointing, and my wallet will be staying shut until Apple and software developers (i.e. Microsoft) sort these processing bottlenecks.
Heat kills electronics. (Hot summers are device killers in the summer months in southern Europe or North America) I'm considering the bulk of 16 for that reason. (+ more battery.) Just for the reliability.
I would be mostly, too. I really do like my 27" iMac for desktop use more than a laptop setup, and that allows me to use a lighter machine when away from the desk. Of course, i will be using the new laptops for most things for a while to see how it goes.
For many people the best mix may be a hefty desktop machine and a supremely light yet quite competent "thingie" when on the go. The 13 MBA is perfect for this.
I have a question for you, sir. I bought an iPad Pro with a 12.9 inch m1 processor. I was thinking of buying a MacBook Pro with an m1 Pro processor. I turned around, the price of which is 2499 dollars. What do you think? Watching games movies with me, in addition to the games, as a strategy. What do you think, and I hope you help me? Thank you.
Thanks for the work @JerrySchulze but here's my question. I have a M1 MBA which I really only need for Office, Web, light video editing, etc. I'm very disinclined to upgrade due to the extra weight, cost and power (I don't really need). If YOUR workload was NOT professional and you were using it for these purposes - which would you choose, 13" MBP, 13" MBA, 14" or 16" MBP? Keep up great work. I hope you'll do a comparison between the m1s and the new MBPs. Happy Thanksgiving in advance.
I think you've answered your own question, the 13" MBA seems like the right choice for you. 13" MBP is certainly not worth it. I would recommend two things, get 16gb RAM and consider if you want a bigger screen size, that's the only thing that might push you to 14" or 16" MBP's.
Ugh, I can't find anyone comparing these 2 but inversed spec'd. Everyone is doing a fully spec'd 14" to a base 16". The 14" throttles the Max, which is why is slower in some tests than the 16". But what can a fully spec'd 16" do when it is not being throttled compared to a base 14." Not criticizing your video man, it great! Good content, nicely structured, everythig well put and hinest. I am just bit frustrated that I can't find an inversed comparison, or a 16" base to 16" maxed one.
2 things 1) what thunderbolt doc do you use I need one so I can use the laptop at my desk on my dual screens. (2) can you do a test using the 140w brick on the 14” laptop and see if it fast fast charges lol
I have a 16” configured like your 16”, and I’m keeping it, but as far as my everyday and professional applications, I’d also have been content with an M1 with 32 GB RAM, in a 15” or 16” MacBook Air, with 5G, focused on thinness and lightness. I need the bigger screen size more than the power. I love the ports of my machine and I use the power to play Cities: Skylines, which, frankly, this computer with M1 Max isn’t very good at through Rosetta, but the 16” MacBook Pro is the only laptop of its performance or greater that meets my noise criteria while gaming, and paired with its screen and speakers it’s the best gaming laptop by default (for Cities: Skylines, Factorio, streaming, and Apple Arcade). I have a desktop PC but I also work at that desk, so at the end of the workday, when sitting at my desk isn’t fun anymore, I turn to gaming on my iPad and M1 Max MacBook Pro, like an insane person. My iPhone and iPad both have unlimited data and my iPhone has substantial hotspot data, which should make game streaming to my laptop on the Amtrak generally possible. I’m sure I will quickly learn if hotspot LTE is not good enough for game streaming when I try it! If not, I’ll get a new iPhone 13 Pro Max for $400 (theoretically, with trade in and “don’t call it a contract”)
Lol. I also turn yo my iPad to game with Call of Duty and an Xbox controller. I wonder about a 15” air with m2 and 32gb. May be right for me if I get over the size.
@@JerrySchulze It’s more like if you can get over having white bezels, that’s if Apple will stay with that design language from the 24” iMac. LOL! I think white bezels would make the notch much more noticeable. That would rub some people the wrong way. So, perhaps we will see black bezels instead. Personally, I think the notch issue on the new MBPs is a non-issue IMHO with having black bezels.

Good laptops for video content production. In general, I think they are a bit oversized for office work or media consumption and therefore not the right choice for about 99% of the people. The only other reason to buy those is the prestige. A bit like driving a Merc.
I agree that the regular M1 should have 32 GB RAM as an option. Most people need the more RAM but not the extra CPU/GPU power that comes from M1 Pro and M1 Max. Really hope they bring that on the next M2 products. However, some would say that the way unified memory and swap memory works, that's not really necessary etc but I still would love to see the M2 with 32GB RAM.
There is something that just causes some hesitations on the M1, all of my M1 machines, that I just dont feel on my 27" iMac. On paper it shouldnt make any sense but just in using with my daily stuff and apps, sometimes the M1 just feels like it is catching up. I am hoping it is ram.
Pretty hard decsision for me… I hate Fan noice, i love that huge Trackpad on the 16“, for graphics design the bigger screen is a huge plus i guess and just the fact that it not runs hot and the fans really nearly never turn on (or turn on but u not hear them) everything speaks for the 16“. But my 7years old Laptop i have now is a big bitter like 2cm in width and length, about 1cm bigger in height and about 500g heavier. And its a pain taking it to school everyday. So the 16“ would be a bit better but the 14“ is just so small and light like omg i love it. What yall think i should get? 14“ or 16“? At graphics design Uni i will most likely work on the laptop itsself and at home with 2-3 external monitors.
@@JerrySchulze Yea thats for sure. I mean my windows laptop is like crazy when im playing league on lowest graphics and even while just researching smth in chrome and write smth down in word the fans are loud. I'm looking to do virtualization with this so I'm leaning towards the 16" M1 Max with 64GB RAM and 1TB SSD. Also, how are you returning your MBPs for another version. Is this an option Apple offers RU-vid testers or everyone?
you know you can keep the magsafe cable at your desk, and then use a usb-c cable for traveling. You don't have to put teh magsafe back in the box and you can enjoy both worlds
There would be no point. He has one cable coming out of his dock that provides power as well as connecting with displays and probably a mouse and keyboard.
