Really like the way he explains it in a relaxed and straightforward manner, watching tech vids usually stress me out with a bunch of extra unnecessary info lol
@@Camothor10 To be fair, saying that it overheats and shuts off if you do a video call should tell you everything you need to know about the MacBook Air.
Mate I don’t know where you are in world but amazon warehouses are hiring. I live in England and they are paying £10.50 - £11.50 an hour 🤷🏾♀️ 8 hour shift 5 days a week for a month is £420
@@nkemani8372 Outside the western world, an average monthly salary is 200-400$. Most people in the world are never going to even touch a Mac. Westerners are just 5% of the world population.
Nkem Ani you’re so nice for informing him. I think he’s from the Philippines, which is a third world country and also has a common salary of £250 A MONTH...
If you’re a student, just dish out the extra 3. Zoom with multiple tabs and various programs running is essential for me. I’m so glad I canceled my air order and got it replaced with a pro.
Digital Trends June 2020: "you don't have to worry about a new version coming out soon" Apple November 2020: "Welcome to the new version of air and pro with super powerful M1"
@@manakmishra the value of any individual thing comes down to your personal preference. While I may think the price is ridiculous and silly for what you get it may be right up your alley. So to each his own
This video is extremely helpful. I got a pre owned air as my first Mac earlier this year. Fell totally in love with it and upgraded to a new pro of the same size as I love the size. And I was trying to reason if I really “needed” to do that. This video helped me understand the idea that the same specs does not mean the same processing power.
If your still unsure, I think the pro is the one you should get if you are a student doing online, or doing long strands of work at a time, because that fan will kill you on the air. I got the pro and I do not regret it
Absolutely the single best, most helpful, well thought-out and presented comparison of two products I ever enjoyed while researching items for a purchase. THANK you for saving me many days of research with your nine-minute report.
The touch bar on the MacBook Pro is actually really damn convenient when you get used to it 🤷♀️Even if you get the base model i5 it will perform better than a specced out air, so don’t ever get an i7 on the air because if you care so much just go pro man
Good note with the Zoom conferencing! I think that's what most people will be using these things for anyway. No point in getting a laptop that can't even handle video conferencing. Base model MacBook Pro will do the job.
@@skdKitsune I have the 2018 as well no issues I dont see need to upgrade.. everyone say that keyboard lol you get used to it. Only thing I notice is battery does drain a tad faster with the new Big Sur update which is in beta still but its what I an running on it.
@@Dashgotgas it does sometimes but doesn't happen every day thankfully. but once it does heat up and make noise, I Ieave google chrome open for school google meets and close other applications like safari, calendar, etc and the laptop will stop making noise within 2 min. I've been using my MacBook Air 2019 for a year now and its been working pretty good but I do suggest the pro if u can afford it and want ur laptop to sustain for the long run because when I go to college I might have to buy the pro to do coding
PRO! MacBook Air for some people I’ve seen gets hot and LOUD The fans start to get really loud. It really is for students who use laptops lightly. I know someone who sold theirs to someone else and got the pro a little while later 🤷🏾♀️ but do what you want
This video said the Air will overheat and shut off if you do a video call. Search "Rossmann MacBook Air 2020", and look up Linus Tech Tips "fixing Apple's engineering in an hour". The fan cools nothing! The heatsink doesn't make proper contact with the CPU. It's like the intentionally sabotaged the cooling so that the next MacBook using the Apple A14 chip looks a lot better by comparison to the current MacBook Air.
Thanks for your explanation. I had a 15in MacPro, because I do video edits. Had it for 6 years and it never disappointed. Unfortunately my cat decided to break it, and I’m now trying to learn the difference. Basically stick with my Pro, preferably the 16in since I am making a career out of this. Got to start saving. Note to people with cats, don’t be stupid like me & let your guard down. 😩
I’m personally put off buying a brand-new Mac because of the fact Apple have done away with the USB3 ports, that and the fact they made the decision to only include two of the thunderbolt ports which in my opinion is the most stupid thing they could’ve done. Not everyone has the amount of money that these machines cost nor do people always want to pay that amount, especially with the lack of ports. I think it’s ridiculous that Apple have done away with these. This is just my personal opinion and I totally understand if not everyone agrees
I'm an incoming university law student buying my first macbook. I will be using my laptop for writing essays, doing research, watching youtube and for frequent Zoom and Skype calls. I'm prepared to invest in the best laptop that will last me 5+ years. Which Macbook do you recommend and what configuration?
Luke: I have never come across your videos before. Job well done! Excellent reporting and analysis. To Digital Trends Management: Please have Luke do more vids. Outstanding job!
Macbook Air as is it it needs more Air since the cooling sucks since 2018! The 2020 Air i5 would have been perfect but apple crippled so it does not compete with the pro.
This review is so complete, just what I needed! I have a Macbook Pro 2012 and I really need a new one because it's started to get very slow and the charger of this computer is horrible because the battery is so old. I'm actually worried that one day I can't turn it on.
Never buy a current gen when another gen is always right around the corner. In fact never buy anything cuz something else will be coming up around the bend. It reminds me of sign i saw years ago that read “ FREE BEER TOMORROW”
Buy whatever when it meets your standards. I bought a $80 Windows 10 4core Intel Atom Tablet, cut a hole in the back, glued on a real heatsink, steady 1.7ghz turbo. Kinda sucks with 2gb ram, but it will outlast the MacBook Air 2020. I still use a desktop from 2005 fully up to date with Windows 10. I still use a 2012 Kindle Fire HD7 daily. If you're building a new computer now, either go Ryzen 9 3950 with 16 cores and 64gb ram, or buy the cheapest used full size desktop with SSD and i5 2400 or newer for $150, add a used 1050ti for $90 and call it a day. It's all about knowing exactly what you want and knowing how you will be using it. Personally I wouldn't bother with 1st gen Raytracing cards, it's just a glorified tech demo with no real rewards yet.
I will be honest here, and IMO it is sooo much worth to pay more for macbook pro, even if you have to save some more, thsu w8 a bit longer. I have read dozens of comments from people who say the air has a problem with cooling. Technically it is not overheating, but the moment when as mentioned here your laptop shuts down during a zoom call, or the fact that it reaches 80-100 Celsius when opening apps (not when they are in the backgroud, but when they are opening) is a joke to me. I know that the laptop is made for light users, but to be fair and serious is zoom cool super demanding task??? If it is demadning then I do no really know what is not... Also better display, for some touchbar, adn especially the performance make even the basic 13 pro an obvious choice for me, and if I were to choose I would prefer to save some more cash, get the pro, and not be bothered by slowdown caused by high tempearutures, which do happen. I talked to people who bough the 2020 air and I heard all the same. They either returned it or sold it after few weeks. Maybe I am too harsh, but I wouldnt get into this thing, and I would go all the way to 13 pro.
Once and for all i'm asking for your help guys... In India, I've opted for Computer Science And Engineering degree and classes are yet to begin. And i'm gonna go for a macbook ONLY for the first time ever. So, I need to code, program and a lot of TECHNICAL STUFF and i'm thinking of ATLEAST 8GB/256GB. Core i5/10th Generation To be frank I don't know about 1.0,2.0,2.4,2.6 GHz. So please tell me, which one and AIR OR PRO (13, the 4 TB3 Ports one!) Thanks in Advance...🙏
I got to correct you, but the MacBook air and pro actually have different keyboards, and surprisingly, the air has the better keyboard. The pro uses the same keyboard as last year, where as the air uses the same keyboard as the MacBook pro 16 inch
it does its a pain ( i used to have the air, but 1 month ago I cracked the corner of the screen, it still works, but my parents got me a pro, and its so much better.)
Ugh its so hard to decide! Generally, i do want to save as much money as possible. But i also do want a laptop thats going to last for yearssss. I don’t do gaming I might dabble in video editing but nothing heavy. And i really don’t want my laptop to heat up easily all the time. Suggestions ?
I was thinking of doing the MacBook air with a i5 processor because wouldn’t that be about the same speed as the baseline MacBook pro. Would it heat up as easily as he said though ?
@@jason45663 I think that unless your only going your laptop for only web browsing, movie/RU-vid watching, and light Microsoft/google programs. If you want to run programs such as adobe or run many tabs I suggest the pro.
Hi thanks for the video! I’m a college student who will be using my MB for research (lots of tabs open), zoom calls and online classes. Will a MBA i5 or entry level MBP be better?
Might as well go fully loaded MBP 16", the MacBook Air is nothing less than total sabotage, a fan that cools nothing, a heatsink that doesn't make proper contact with the CPU. Search "Rossmann MacBook Air 2020", and Linus Tech Tips "fixing Apple's engineering in an hour" to see just how bad the Cooling is. It is the worst Thermal Solution I have ever seen and that includes a RCA Windows 10 Tablet that used a piece of aluminum foil as a heatsink! At least with the tablet I was able to cut a hole in the back and glue on a proper heatsink so the 4 core Intel Atom CPU could maintain a steady 1.7ghz turbo.
All my things are USB, not the thunderbolt. My camera, terabytes, chargers... I have the 2012 MacBook Air 😅 getting a new one, but how will I run all my things?
Thank you so much! This helped me make my decision. Especially the part about overheating and randomly shutting off during zooms. This is why I have to replace my 2015 Macbook 12”.
I have a surface pro and I want buy another device to use with it for school and even for professional life. Any suggestions? Like the surface pro is already a tablet/laptop so idk whether to get a iPad Pro, MacBook Air/Pro. I’m not sure whether an iPad Pro is compatible with programming softwares like for example Alteryx.
Qus: Is it enough to just get 8gb ram version?? or should i spend $200 more for 16gb ram??? i'm not video editor or programmer. i design tshirt using cloud application and do little video edit for advertising..
There’s a huge difference of things you can do with 16gb compared to the 8gb. If you’re planning to keep it for a long time and do any kind of thing outside of Netflix surfing zoom calls writing RU-vid etc definitely the 16gb but if you replace your laptop after a year you should be fine with the 8
I managed my degree on a MacBook Air and it was really successful - especially if you're in the medical library a lot and all the seats with power outlets get taken up quickly, the battery life can go for a whole day, and it will manage what you need. Good luck with your MD!
I had the Air and returned it. I tried to block out all the criticisms but in the end those limitations proved to be true for me. The fans kept spinning for my workflow (zoom, attached to external monitor, other productivity apps). Apple was very kind in taking it back after 14 days. The Pro has stayed whisper quiet in the two weeks I’ve had it. It’s not cheap but the Air’s fans come on too much for my liking. Shame since I prefer the airs form factor, trackpad feedback, and physical function keys. If you can afford it, go 10th gen pro.
I’m a junior graphic designer and a MacBook Pro is really a big investment.. is it better a pro or the macmini? Are they kinda the same? I cannot afford a 16inch one hhh
