This video is a job from our machining workshop to machine and bore the ends of 3 large steel tubes for a welding rotator drive plate. The steel tubes are approximately 3 metres (10’ feet) long and 325mm (13” inches) in diameter so we need to set them up in our 5 metre LZMT lathe machine. We first set up the tubes using our Tailstock chock and machine a band for the steady rest. Once the steady rest is setup we then remove material from the ID of tube end to suit the drive plate. We are using our Monkula Anti-vibration boring bar and will also be machining and facing down the tube ends to customers spec.
In this video we are using:
- LZMT CW6280D Lathe
- Monkula M6D-50-400-40 Anti-vibration bar

What kind of metal/tubing is that? It has a real loud "ring" to it when the chips are bouncing around inside when its turning... makes me think its some pretty hard stuff. ?

Love your channel and content. Was just curious if you'd like to see an 85' lathe with a chuck at both ends and 55' between the chucks. We have a family shop here in the states and bought the lathe back in the early 90's. Have some short videos turning hydraulic cylinder barrels for a customer. Want to say the cylinder barrel was about 60" Dia and 12 or 14 feet long.

Today’s video is the perfect example of what I’d like to ask because it showed some of the different sizes, shapes and colors that come off the lathe and it’s fascinating. Have you ever thought of putting the different castoffs in like a mason jar, put your logo on it, make it worth your time to sell and put it on a limited run in your store. Hell start with just two or three if anything? Its something tangible that you’ve worked on and that pretty cool. You have a good core viewership. Food for thought I know there’s a million other things to do. Cheers.

I was working at a pulp mill in Northern BC. They recognized my machining love and soon had me regrinding the many outfeed roles. I believe they were 12 x 240 inch. Kind of a boring affair as once the setup was done there were uncountable hours watching the big lathe with the only changeups were to dress the stone once in a while. I was never allowed to sit down as well. It eventually drove me to going over to one of the 3 sawmills on site where I became a millwright. I had my papers by the time I was 19 and soon bored with that I joined the Canadian Navy. Lots of changeups as a Marine Engineer there eh. It is great to see you working with that new long bed lathe. I just plain love it eh ! You know how much I love big and hey my friend that boring bar is to die for, LOL. This one was great so I am off to see the sawmill roller and broaching. No better way to say goodbye to another week, eh my friend. See ya there bud.

Impressive as usual all around. I loved the phrase "They usually do CNC work but this is too big to their machine". Back in 1974 I had a high school councillor tell me I was wasting my time taking a machine shop class because all the manual machinists would be replaced by robots. I'll take my chances I told him. Blithering idiot. Somebody had to make the prototype first. In my area there are companies screaming for manual machinists because it just costs too much to do a limited run on a CNC. Don't get me wrong there is a place for CNC but to purchase a machine big enough to do jobs you maybe will do is way too costly. You have to get production jobs to make the payment on that machine. This is where shops like Curtis's shine. Also this is where guys like Curtis shine too. Again great job on the machine work. Beautiful camera work and editing by the giggling camera lady. Homeless you are slacking off. I only saw you destroy one thing and that was a spider web. You deserved that sneeze. LOL! Thanks for the video guys. Until next week. Cheers! Terry from South Carolina USA

Your school councillor was right, you’ve only got a job because we’re training about 10% of the turners / machinists we did 30 years ago. Look at the photos form the 60’s of rooms full of men in smocks stood at lathes making stuff. It’s just not a thing anymore.
@chrisforgan731
@chrisforgan731 2 года назад
@@chrisb4009 that is true to a degree. but every machine shop still has a manual lathe to make unusual stuff and tools for the various machines. a local harvester manufacturer still had manual lathes for the small and intricate parts, to make spares for the other machines. as well as 3 large cnc machining centers

Good times Kurtis, Interchangeable head bars are cool, saves buying all those tool shanks multiple times. I do alot of bore and key jobs in the 75-200mm range with fairly tight finish requirements. I use the through coolant feature for compressed air to keep the chips pushed ahead of the cut, so they don't run back through and botch my finish.

In one of the comments a viewer said a high school shop teacher said that manual machining was going to be replaced by CNC. When I set up my home machine shop by friend who was a trained machinist for years would not let me start out with CNC machines. He said to buy manual machines to learn on. He taught me safety using the machines I purchased. He said the best machinist started out using manual machines. You have to THINK about what you want the finished job to be. Your brain now becomes the CNC computer. I amaze my self with what I am able to produce and how I can accurately reproduce the same results. I am now a REAL machinist not a button pusher. Get a lathe and mill and your only limited by your imagination with what you can make or fix. Keep the videos coming. Thanks.

I was a young engineer at a manufacturing company that has been mentioned in this shop before. They had demonstrated a new machine in front of the executive staff and other office folks, and shut it off a bit more abruptly than many expected. As things were wrapping up a 'very experienced' guy starts casually spreading the fresh sand around with his feet where the machine had been demonstrated. He told me to join in before the safety and enviro mental alarmists noticed the few quarts of oil that had spilled when a hydraulic line blew. By the time they came by, the machine had been moved to the wash bay, and there was nothing but clean dirt over the crime scene. Like you said, don't let the safety officers know about any of the fun. They'll write a policy, and an oversight policy, and eventually need 3 managers to ensure all the boxes are checked.

That was cool using the tailstock chuck lining it up for the steadyrest. Does that boring bar have media or some sort of viscous fluid in to keep it from vibrating,or is it just the girth? Great video,like the big machining.

That is one killer boring bar. In a past video you called that machine a watch lathe. Suppose you could really duplicate Big Ben, so your description is not too far off!. Fascinating video, am addicted to your channel

Hey mate the big lathe is in progress got a few more things to do to it before it is ready. This job was sending sharp chips everywhere so he was out of the way for safety 🤣👍

Gday, that was a nice simple easy job, the anti vibration boring bars are good thing and to be able to interchange the ends is a great idea, I wonder what material they are made from to reduce the vibration, there were decent size cuts you did and no sign at all of chatter anywhere, thanks for another very enjoyable Friday evening, have a great weekend, cheers
@CuttingEdgeEngineering

Hey Matty yeah this was a bit of a treat job, nothing to clean or fix 🤣 The anti vibe bar is a special combo has a chunk of carbide in the end of the bar to dampen the vibrations. Goes well. Cheers mate, Kurtis 😎👍
