I had the chance to carry out some machine work for a local firm, and it needed the use of the running steady. I see it’s not covered by many RU-vid videos so I took the opportunity to put together some of the tips I use to get a good job……

Nice video. Practical and to the point. Regarding the centering of the tailstock it might be worth mentioning that you need to take any twist out of the lathe bed first by using shims under its mounting points. Otherwise your tailstock will not be centred all along the bed length.

A lot of very good information and things I'd never thought about, particularly effects of heated work piece.

A very well-explained video. Center lathe turning is not easy really, some people say it is but getting the job right to specifications is the hard part as I found out myself through experience. My late father was a fitter turner originally in Ireland and he told me that years ago there was such a thing as an apprentice turner only and this took 5 years just on the center lathe only! But by the end of the apprenticeship, you are expected to know everything there is to know about center lathe turning. Job advertisements that said Center lathe turner class 1 wanted could earn very good money back then. Most center lathe turners these days do not know everything about turning

This may confuse many people as you are demonstrating a follow rest and not a steady rest. A follow rest is attached to the carriage and moves along with it. A steady rest is rigidly fixed to the lathe bed and does not move with the carriage.

A key on steady rest is still in it. This is a very dangerous situation.

Yes this old Colchester is well used and really quite slack, but she can still hold her own when needed!
