Where did they go wrong. Now Mackay is just a place where tourists just drive through.

The local council did not have enough vision. Its sad a lot of the best areas were sold to developers for short term gain (and foolishness), rather than keeping that land to develop tourism or long term reserves for the community, (which would also attract tourists). The council just never had their successive acts together, unfortunately. And they let Mackay Port Authority destroy the Mackay harbour park, which was beautiful once upon a time, and is still recalled with much nostalgia, (and anger as well, about what happened there).
