Ipswich - Then & Now VII. We are exploring some of the corner stores that were part of the lifeblood of so many towns including Ipswich. The implementation of island shopping centres has pretty much signalled the end for these stores. A stark reality and sadness was felt by me when you see the old photos with the proud owners standing out front compared with many of them today.
List of where these shops are/were.

11. 18 Thomas Street, Blackstone
12. 37 Warwick Road, Ipswich
13. 341 Brisbane Street, West Ipswich
14. 1A Gilmore Street, Leichhardt
15. 101 Downs Street, North Ipswich

I loved seeing these shops. We lived in Woodend, and I remember walking up a hill to a shop to get bread for Mum..we were in Bowen St down by the river. I cannot even remember what the shop looked like as we left when I was 10 yrs old... I do remember picking at the bread on the way home tough and getting into trouble. :) The bread was a high top half loaf wrapped in tissue paper. ( and the bread had a hole in it when I got home. LOL.

There was a small one across the road from Blair State School and another one in Cribb Street . It was diagonally across from the park. The Crozier Family had that shop for quite some time.

Summer just finished here in Ipswich. 79 days in a row where the temperature did not drop below 20c at night. 30c during the day.

The first picture is near where I live in Leichhardt. Never knew the shop used to be a servo, as I am a fairly recent resident.. Been vacant for a few years now. Front verandah needs a new support post.

Do you by chance have dates of the old photos? The Glebe Rd. shot at 0:40 is circa 1973-Winfield smokes began in '72.

It would be nice if these corner stores were still thriving however the large shopping centres and supermarkets tend to lure us and block any chance of these places surviving.

Our old grocery store at East Ipswich is still standing, though no longer trading. It's boarded up after a motor vehicle ploughed into the front of it. It used to be Burrell's Newsagency, right from when I was a child through to becoming a young man.

I should have added that we operated a grocery store from these premises back in the 70's. Not my wife's happiest venture. We had the weirdest neighbours who co-existed on food and drugs. It made for a very tough existence.

This is what the supermarket chain did to small business. Thanks a lot, Coles and Woolies, and the successive governments who let them monopolise the grocery industry 😡
