August Pier Fishing With Feathers For Mackerel.
We caught over 40 mackerel in a 6 hour session, most of which were eaten, used as bait or frozen for later use.
The tackle was a spinning rod, loaded with 20lb mono line, and fishing with mackerel feathers and 2oz (60 grams) weights/leads.

If the bottom isn't snaggy with rocks or kelp I like to countdown to find how many seconds to reach bottom. Often the fish are deeper and feel safer not having to come up. Once I know how long to reach bottom I can stop short and avoid snags but still be deep on the retrieve. If chasers are following I freespool it back down often triggering strikes on the fall or way up. Sometimes I let a hooked small one swim back down to the school and you get multiple fish on. Rarely we get giant mackerel around a meter and they fight like a baby tuna. So rare I let them go. Big Mac Attack. Proper care of those you keep is important especially if it's hot and sunny. They can get mushy so it's best to bleed them and keep chilled. My Japanese mother prefers these over the bass, bonita and even yellowtail. I was telling her that's the bait for real fish. Now it seems the little fish have less Mercury and better fish oils.

That's really interesting I like the idea of that tactic alot it actually seems really smart and I'm sure I might use that idea in the future, I learn something new everyday

That's because the stocks are diminished. We never used to catch small ones. Mackerel are slow growing and take several years to achieve a decent size. Not good!

Out of curiosity what time of day and what tide were you fishing off? I've been here many times with little to no luck.
@GuillaumesFishing
@GuillaumesFishing 3 года назад
You can fish anytime of the day. I'd start fishing a few hours before high tide, and continue fishing even when the tide ebbs, until the fish move off. Some days they can be very far out, some days they can be hunting along the pier wall and sometimes they'll hunt in the harbour, even in very shallow water! The mackerel will only be feeding when the sea temperature is over 13°C. It's only worth fishing this pier in July until later September. Goodluck!
@kerryfoster1
@kerryfoster1 2 года назад
Good to see you release them. It takes only a few to maintain the stock. Pity the commercials don't have the brains to do the same. Make the most of it! When you're my age there won't be any. Good luck!

those things occur in massive numbers. even if he were to take every single one, it wouldn't make a difference since most of them end up eaten by other fish anyway. The bigger issue is the commercial fishing ships that catch these guys by the tens of thousands.
@kerryfoster1
@kerryfoster1 2 года назад
@@simonphoenix3789 Yes it true that anglers would make no difference the stocks. That's no excuse for taking more than you need. The commercials have devastated the stocks since 2008. The obvious sign to me was the size of fish caught. Tiny! I think it's ONLY because of lockdown the stocks have recovered slightly. Don't expect it to last. We will know in 2022!

Yeah true, I think feathers are probably easier to use for beginners and you can catch more fish at a time if you're looking for large numbers of mackerel
@jem4win
@jem4win 3 года назад
No point in releasing makeral back after you've handled it as within around 24hrs it will die, if you use barbless or flatten the barbs on the hooks (or trebles if spinning) you can shake them off back into the water without touching them which is better for the fish 👍
@GuillaumesFishing
@GuillaumesFishing 3 года назад
This myth was proven to be false. A Norwegian study, published by the Institute of Marine Research Norway, which involved handling mackerel and tagging them saw that the mackerel survived and continued on with their normal migration patterns, eventually returning back to the UK 👍
@jem4win
@jem4win 3 года назад
Have you got a link to the survey/study please as that would be an interesting read ?
@GuillaumesFishing
@GuillaumesFishing 3 года назад
@@jem4win Unfortunately the link doesn't seem to work but here it is anyway: www.unit.no/ugyldig-lenke-til-dokument-i-vitenarkiv I read a very short summary of it from the British Sea Fishing website: www.worldseafishing.com/threads/mackerel-handling.38432859/ There's alot of debate across the Internet on this subject but from what I've read is that mackerel have very sensitive skin and they can be damaged by human hands, but apparently they can heal from this. Some sources say they die 24 hours after handling but on the other hand some go as far as saying they die up to 2 weeks later. There's an idea that mackerel anglers say this to justify them taking undersized fish or huge amounts of mackerel. Personally I'm settling on the conclusion that they survive and I want to add that having wet hands doesn't damage the skin as much as having warm dry hands. It's also illegal to take mackerel under 30cm long and if its true that mackerel die after handling then I'm sure that the local congers or crabs and lobsters will just come and eat it.

That is overkill keeping between 20 and 30 mackerel, mackerel is a member of the tuna family and look what happened to the tuna for 40 years. The tuna disappeared from British waters all together and became an endangered species worldwide

I slightly disagree, 152,000 tonnes of Atlantic mackerel were caught in 2019 by commercial fishermen in the UK, while you call out recreational fishermen for keeping a couple dozen mackerel for consumption... Mackerel numbers are going down and you can guess whos to blame
@kerryfoster1
@kerryfoster1 2 года назад
@@GuillaumesFishing Yes quite. This year 2021 we have seen huge shoals. 1st time in years! 30 years ago mackerel in Summer was a given. You could catch hundreds now you'd be pushed to catch 10. Predictable unfortunately.
