Mackjack525's exhaust note challenge 

Never get tired of watching and listening to this old girl.A long wheel base cabover with a v8 cat in it. A real roadtrain icon.

It rides ok, air bags on the rear & parabolics on the front, long 5m wheelbase, no payments!

For 2 trailers @ 80 tons, probably 1,000,000 kms for an engine. 3 trailers, 120 tons about 800,000 kms, but it varies depending on the engine etc. Transmissions a little more.

The Mack & CATs V8s both sound good, but you can always pick which is which side by side.

Doing what a real machine does, out working for a living and not in a shed getting polished every bloody day.

I remember riding in my dad's cab-over when I was a kid. I'm a driver now and I love my truck... but If I had the option to drive one of these I would take it in a heartbeat

Back in it's day the 3408 were commonly known as "bird scarers" anybody who has herd a 3408 start up would know what I mean. The racket and rattle was enough to wake the dead. However they did have a great sound. Nothing like that today !!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't been through the Hunter for years but it could have been a mate of mine who's got a KW with a 3408, it was blue but it's got a green paint job now. It uses about the same fuel as a C15 if you drive it correctly.

I had a look at the turbo & it's just got the CAT brand on it, but it's a later turbo & spools up quicker than the original.

more turbo surge due to sudden drop in turbine pressure causing compressor wheel to slow suddenly and resonate; wastegates dont open when u let off the power, they do it at load.

That's it........the road with more parking bays than probably any road in Australia, my favorite road. You're the 1st one to pick up on the covers, we left them on in Boulder to go and look at the Super Pit bob tail, had a bite at Leonora and didn't notice, and didn't find out till Meekatharra ( that place alright, eh ! )

3408 sounds beautiful in that KW, first class. I am sure you dropped something off where i worked in the hunter valley one day and it brought a big smile to my face. A bit thirsty these days i guess but plenty of character. Mack superliners were about the same sound with the 3408.

Actually it's got Adelaide hot dogs but compared to say a Mack Muncher with the same mufflers it is quieter. With the winds we get on the Nullarbor and the usually high wind-dragging loads there isn't a helluva lot of difference no matter what engine you got.

the only competition... would be from someone like Heavy Haulage Australia.. with that 525 mack beast they got.

Thanks for looking, it sounds like it spools a little faster. I wonder if it is similar to a c-15 or somthing like that. because she sure does clear up quicker in the smoke department!! lol sure is a nice ole girl. I collect ole w900a extended hoods, but I also have 1 1980 k100 with a 3408 di b series that i need to restore yet. I like the cabovers too. Would like to see it in person someday ur trucks there really interest me.

The quality of the vids is superb..Who stands there and videos and do you have to go back for them.

i miss smoke on the new trucks, was good to see them pulling away through the gears or pulling up a hill down the gears with some good black smoke coming out, the best was missing a couple of gears and having to grab what ever you could get and bogging down nice and low and watching the pure black soot pour out, aaah the good ole days

This is his cousin's truck, though it's changed a bit since he owned it about 15 years ago.

It was a good low load of steel rebar but right on max weight

@scania98989 Mack use Volvo engines now (badged as Mack) because they are owned by Volvo, but you can also have Cummins. The V8 E9 Mack engine had similarities to the Scania V8 but I don't know much about them. When they were owned by Renault they had Renault engines, or you could have the E9 V8. They don't make the Mack V8 anymore.

@wemoy No they don't have jakes, they have a CAT Brakesaver which is a hydraulic retarder that works off the engine oil. It make a whining noise and you can hear it on my vid 'Like Big V8s'. You can get Cummins Sig. and ISX or the Mack MP8 on new Australian Macks. In fact you can only get the Cummins on the Australian Titan. But no more Mack V8s.

@HUTCHtopher Actually they don't have wastegates, I guess the sound is the turbo decelerating.

Why do European truckers even need 730 - 750 HP, The Aussie boys are pulling 3 times there weight 120 + tonne, on 3 or 4 trailers with 600 + HP in the outback. Sometimes I think us Europeans have totally lots the plot, were greedy fuckers.

The new injectors we fitted cut out the smoke, but I guess one day we won't be able to run these engines unless they're electronic. CAT does have a 3408E electronic engine but it's not for the highway ...that's progress for you.

What do ya mean too much black smoke? That wasnt that bad. Are there strick emissions laws in Australia? Would this have gotten you fined or something?

Fact is, I don't want it to smoke. But the more you put the boot in on a mechanical engine, the more it smokes, especially when the injectors are stuffed like when the vid was done.

Cat engine sounds spot on! Love it. Scania v8 is a girls truck.

It was a blue KW so very well could have been him, wouldn,t think there are to many around with that engine.

i want to put my two bobs worth in here ... i have a t2670 inter with a 444 in it .. a single exh 5 inch straight through muffler and ive had so many comments on how good it sounds on the jake and under load .... you still cant beat a v 8 mack like freddy deens ... or gm 16v 149 's cabover V8 cat ... horses for courses i think !!

@Xx69roadrunnerxX Cats have good power, but a lot of them got bad fuel mileage compared to like some cummins and the 60 series, especially if you ran a 1693 or a 3408. They would probably get like 3.5 mpg where an average 3406 would get around 5.

how much km can make one engine ? for example, 80-90 tons and 120-130 tons if you can write how long is components life for example clutch gearbox diff..... thanks

Unfortunately, no. He got rid of it because it "had a drinking problem that he couldnt support" as he put it. I do have a friend that has a Jimmy General with an 8V??T. I have been trying to get ahold of him for a while to see if he would let me vid his truck, but have not had any luck. Maybe one of these days

It's about 1.3 km/lt as a R/T, not that bad. Modern engines are about 0.1 km/lt better.

Funny thing is diesels are atcually way more efficient, and in Ireland for example our road tax system (dunno what the US system is do you guys have an annual tax to pay each year?) has been changed so that it favours diesel engines as they produce LESS C02 emissions and are in general not as bad for the environment as "gas" engines. It's nuts how there's that sort of rather ignorant anti diesel setiment at government level in the US. You'd nearly swear they were in cahoots with oil companies :P

Love the "E9" but this kicks ass...

Would have to say that you're easily in the lead on the Challenge. I reckon some bigger or more free flowing pipes would make her bark something feirce! Doubt you would wana listen to the droaning all day/night tho...
