BARRY, a total wipe out is great advice. I recommend about one a year to perform a wipe out and reinstall. It can become slightly trick now that the OS is digitally singed by apple on the AppStore in situations where you may need to go back.

Ok so I’m a new Mac user (after my first cpu tab works from Compaq) and so I did upgraded the second I saw Ventura update. I did had some problems with Logic klopfgeist ….. it took about 10 minutes to load a small sesion (I panicked ) In that immediate moment I knew I should have waited and hoped I had your phone 😂😂😂 nevertheless I restarted 2 times and problem solved. I think plug ins were upgrading or something. Your channel it’s amazing just hearing your opinion and sharing is so satisfying. Keep it up, I follow you before your transformation from Avid and saw the whole process. 🤜

I’ve been a Mac user since 1984. What I have learned over these 38 years is to only deal with software and hardware vendors who follow Apple’s guidelines. New OSs add features, they don’t take away. Properly written software can’t break because all the stuff it depends on is still there and what is missing is taking advantage of new technology. I have kept track of those companies that have problems with new OS releases and I simply don’t use them, or dump them if I bought something from someone without a track record. With audio hardware, if it is Apple Core Audio compliant it does not need a driver. So I don’t use hardware that requires a driver. The result of this practice? I ALWAYS upgrade on day one of the OS release and I NEVER have had a problem upgrading on day one.
@Mrfpsara

I am in the same shoes, agree 100%. Companies that break with updates and those who still cant catch up with apple silicon need to be dropped. Sonible fixed their plug ins on Ventura release day, this is a company that cares about its costumers.

I have an iMac Pro running high sierra with pro tools 2018.4. I was so terrified of updating my os that I have recently purchased a mac studio ultra and I’m going to down load protools studio. I am planning to keep my older system intact until I know my recording will work on the new system. Now I have to upgrade my Focusrite driver which will probably not work with my old system. Why do we do this to ourselves. Lol. Really enjoy your material and how it’s presented.
@BarryJohns
@BarryJohns Год назад
Depending on how your focus rate is, you may have an issue there. ProTools is running really good today, so you shouldn’t have any issues even though it’s not technically Apple Silicon certified yet. But you’re doing the smart thing by maintaining your old system, gives you the ability to test out new waters, with the security of being able to go back when you need to.

The best way to upgrade may be to clone your current working computer to an external hard drive, then boot your computer from that external hard drive, then upgrade the system that’s on the external hard drive to Ventura, and try to see if everything works that way. If it doesn’t work you just unplug the external hard drive and boot your system like you normally do. That way you can try out everything without compromising your original system.

I’m fortunate enough to use apples for my everyday light work at home and love the integration across devices. I kept trying a Mac for my studio and always have problems. My Dual Presonus Quantum interfaces (+ plugins)work perfectly through every single Windows 10/11 update. I keep trying to go back to a full Mac ecosystem, but when I need to get serious work done, I have to use Windows…. Also don’t get me started on thousands of dollars spent on horrible docking stations for macs. I have trouble with intel and M1/2 Mac models (FYI I’m an IT director and employ a couple audio engineers for reference) Side-note: The entire Presonus ecosystems and software is amazing! Thanks for the video.
@BarryJohns
@BarryJohns Год назад
Honestly, Mo, that’s a little hard for me to wrap my head around. I’ve been on macs for decades, and they’ve been primarily used for audio work, and I almost never, I mean, and really, never, have any issues that are not user related problems, and for me at the stage of my experience, that is almost never. It’s one of the main reasons I do these videos, to let people know how to avoid potential problems. But like I said, in the video, there’s only been like two OS upgrades, that have caused any issues of the last 25 years for me. They were resolved pretty quickly. Honestly, the only time any real issues have come up was a transition to Apple Silicon with a complete new way of working, but even those are completely gone now. Windows used to be a complete disaster for audio, but that’s not the case for some time. Now, you can do perfectly good work on either one of them, whichever one suits the needs best. But, like I said, I got 25 years into Mac’s, and I’m usually the guy people called when they have any issues, but the vast overwhelming majority of time, it’s user error. Now, I’m not suggesting that’s the case with you. Please understand that. But, I just can’t relate to your post above. I’m not saying it’s not accurate, I’ve just not experienced it, nor does anyone else that I know have those kinds of problems once they fully understand how all of this works. 99 times out of 100 you just plug it in and it works with a Mac. You don’t need drivers you don’t need anything it just works automatically. But you do have to check for compatibility, especially for plug-ins. As well as occasionally when going to a new OS, or certainly older plug-ins. That said, I’ve had next to no issues, historically having a new operating system cause any issues. Yes, there’s been a few select times, but overwhelmingly the others, everything’s just worked.
@mostyles328
@mostyles328 Год назад
@@BarryJohns Barry, Sorry if my post sounded a little harsh. I'm glad to hear Macs have served you so well in the studio. I loved them back in the 90s when windows would cause all kinds of firmware problems with audio cards, interfaces, peripherals. I'm also giving the new M1 silicone a pass for at least a year/2. I just find that if I want something to simple work and expandable, I end up grabbing a windows computer (custom) and s#it just works! My guys often have 64 tracks or orchestra instruments and I need reliability and power that Apple has seem to be missing from the older mac Pros. (I can't justify another cheese grater in our studios) We will keep macs around for clients and students that insist, but most the heavy lifting is done by Windows now. PS. the new silicone is a brilliant shift in Apple gear. Having a propriety closed controlled ecosystem, like in the past, is a move in the right direction to improve quality.

Good points. I‘ve been on mac since 2004/2005, too. You forgot one important hurdle within the intel phase: 32 to 64 Bit. Together with Apple‘s indecisiveness towards Carbon vs Cocoa for a while, it started the 12 year long discussion wether or not you really need 64 bits, mostly driven by favorite plugins which were never migrated to 64 Bits. Beside the big milestones, there were other breaking changes, though. Security features like signed installers, for example. Now, slowly but surely, openGL is deprecated and GUI acceleration needs to be Metal. AUv3 will at some point be required. There’s no discussing away that Apple keeps developers on their toes compared to Microsoft who still maintain win32 compatibility. They invest a lot of time and effort into softening the blow of breaking changes and for most of us, that actually works surprisingly well. That being said, as one shining example, if you use FabFilter plugins, they have an incredibly good track record of choosing technology that doesn’t break. You may see 6 months after a new major version without an update because everything just continues to work or you may receive a compatibility update before or on the day of release of MacOS, which fixes compatibility. The only company which comes even close, despite all the WUP hate, is Waves. They‘ve almost every time been compatible within days of release. Me personally, I‘ve had the experience that developers who can’t maintain compatibility on MacOS also tend to have issues in their plugins like memory leaks or audio issues which just never get fixed.

I'm running Ventura in a Proxmox virtual machine, and I haven't found any feature useful for us audio/music folks, good thing is it's "hackintosh compatible" even on old 4th gen Intel (Haswell) and its igpu, actually I still have Mojave/Catalina on my older Intel Macs, and Big Sur on my M1 Mac Mini because I haven't found any appealing features on Monterey anyway - only once my software becomes incompatible (and Reaper won't anytime soon), I'd be forced to upgrade....

@AdamElteto
@AdamElteto Год назад
Yup, upgrade the Studio to Windows, haha! Absolutely, there are many different use cases, but since Windows has become rather stable for audio production in the last few years, and it breaks compatibility less frequently, and you get more processing power for less money (just price a multicore Xeon Mac Pro with maxed out RAM on the Apple store and see how much cheaper you can get the same configuration on a Windows machine...), Mac is not an obvious no-brainer automatic choice for music production anymore. Even before the Apple Silicon switch, Mac OS upgrades often broke hardware and software compatibility. Sure, vendors eventually caught up, but then there were the puzzle games of certain DAWs only working on Apple Silicon with VST3s but with Rosetta would work with VST2s but then the whole 32 and 64 bit thing comes in... Yes, for some users with their setup things may work, but it is not always user error when things do NOT work. As an example, even MOTU technical support admitted the debacle with updates and compatibility with some of their interfaces. Then the Apple fan crowd comes in an scoffs at anyone who points things out saying "well, why would you even want to do that" and "if it does not work with Apple then one does not even need to do that in life" and "try not to hold it that way". In the meantime, some interfaces AND even software and plugins have been working literally just fine since Windows XP. So again, with endless use cases and hardware/software combinations, there is never a guarantee. Notice how many composers are running their Cubase on Windows? More power, expandability and networkability for complex studio setups. Yes, agreed, that is a more specific music composition/scoring use case, but it is not a statistical outlier anymore. In my opinion, where Apple really shines is their creative music tools on iOS. There so many great and stable apps that provide extremely powerful music creation tools. As such, I find the combination of Windows studio rig with iOS for mobile production a good combination. For a powerful but fairly lean music production laptop, M1M2 MacBooks are great, so credit is given where it is due. For a more powerful and configurable portable experience, custom-built Windows laptops may work better, as they can be customized with multiple NVME drives and upgraded to RAM, and many of them have significantly more port options. Of course, we will see what the more powerful versions of the M2 chip will bring in new MacBook Pros, probably in the spring... In the meantime, everyone hold off on your OS updates as long as you can!

Hi Barry, have you ever experienced issues updating within a version of macOS? My scenario is this - my current machine is an M1 Mac mini on monterey 12.5.1 as it arrived brand new and my M1 macbook air is currently in the mail (brand new shipped from apple) on its way to me with what I hope will be any version of monterey (hopefully not ventura). The plan is to have them be exactly the same using migration assistant as soon as the macbook arrives. If the the macbook air arrives with any other version of monterey besides 12.5.1 I plan to update them both to the final update of monterey 12.6.8. Do you foresee any plug-in or software issues caused by this or are we pretty safe moving within updates in monterey? I understand that without knowing my exact software my mileage may vary but I would value your input whatever the result may be when I go ahead with the plan.
@BarryJohns
@BarryJohns Год назад
First Migration Assistant or Time Machine are “Never” your friend when moving to “New” Mac, avoid like the plague. You “ALWAYS” want to do a fresh install of everything when buying a new computer. It’s time consuming but necessary. Not sure why you are hesitant going with Ventura today. When it first came out there were issues, but that’s often the case. Today I have all three of my Mac’s on the most recent version of Ventura and have zero issues. What exactly is holding you back?
@liamcoombes2697
@liamcoombes2697 Год назад
The hesitation in upgrading from Monterey to Ventura is that I have a perfectly functioning system on Monterey and can’t see any benefit in messing with something that is working perfectly fine. Every time I turn the machine on it does exactly what I want how I want. I also use plug-in alliance plug-ins which are well known for never updating and their customer service is terrible so unless there is a good reason to upgrade to Ventura I don’t see the point. The only thing that computer is there to do is record and mix, any other features are wasted on me (unless there is something I am missing). I am interested in more info on why migration assistant isn’t a good idea. Are you able to give more details on what issues this can cause?
