Avid Is Going 100% Subscription

I’m sticking with Logic Pro, thank you very much. Avid can stick it’s “industry standard” BS where the sun doesn’t shine.

Just ran across your channel for the 1st time. I am 100% with you bro. I have been using Pro Tools since 2000. I purchased a perpetual license in 2016 and purchase an update yearly. Like you I love Pro Tools. Been playing music professionally off and on for over 50 years. I am a retired Engineering Manager. For the last 5 years I mostly focused on studio work, composing and producing. I am disappointed with the latest news regarding the end of perpetual licensing. I hate to switch to a different DAW at this time in my life. My time is important. I want to focus on creativity, not screwing around learning new software, but if I am forced to I will make the switch.. There are a lot of people like you and me out there, but only willing to spend so much. Avid needs to get their heads out of their asses. Like you said. There are many other choices out there. Thank you for putting this news out. Great job.

Guys, switch to Reaper. You won’t regret it. Also, this subscription BS Is annoying af. Antares and Izotope have been slowly switching to this model as well. We as consumers gotta make our voices heard with our wallets.

If it weren't for reaper I wouldn't really have a job as sound designer and voice recorder, so yeah, f*ck pay walls and subscriptions that cost literally 2 months of rent and a bit more here in my country.

Damn! Barry said it with his chest. This wasn't a rant, it was a sermon. Avid, Please get it together and stop it with the bait and switch schemes. I have a perpetual license with updates that lapsed in January of this year. I would be fine paying $99 for a renewal of updates for my license but it will be a cold day in hell before I get tricked into paying for a subscription service with shady fine print. Reaper doesn’t get enough love. If you’ve already acquired a substantial amount of 3rd parties it’s a steal! The customization and ability to create the most intricate macros is of the charts!

Go for pretty much any other DAW is the lesson here. Avid can burn.

Why don’t you switch to Reaper for $60 you get a full licence you wont have to put up with Avid BS. You can even customise Reaper to look like Pro Tools if you want. it uses very little CPU and will run on the smell of an oily rag.

So many DAWs that are objectively better these days. Time to let AVID go. Let 'em dig their own grave. Most producers I know dont use PT but most commercial studios do. What happens when more and more of them close down? I can't help but think when the current generation of professional protools users retire will the user/ fan base dry up?

Barry, u are MY MAN!!! Im an O.G. Cubase user from back in the 1990 Atari Computer days... Had a financial hardship 3 or 4 years ago, and got stuck on 8.5 Pro... Last year, I upgraded straight to 11 for $160 I will always love Steinberg! Keep up the good work, my brother!

I'm using Logic and Reaper on Avid hardware and loving it. I switched from PTHD years ago. It bears mention that Todd Rundgren switched to Reason because he was sick of dealing with Avid.

Normally i don't comment on your videos but this one truly fired me up. So i normally get the yearly Subs but it is my personal opinion that AVID is just gone full cash cow now. I had to renew on October this year but since i have an Live10 License i will most definitely work on Ableton 100%. Avid is now gone Rogue, i will NO LONGER be using AVIDs products from now on. I went from pt to studio one and there’s no comparison between the 2! Studio one is incredible. Great video as always 🤘

we record 168 inputs during live shows using : 3 Digico stage boxes + RME interface + REAPER with a session around 370 Gigabytes ...not a single problem ...NO issues - for many many years we suffered live mulitracking with pro-tools (it was always crashing and bugz and irritating) bye bye Avid$$$

I used Cubase for the longest time. Decided to check out Reaper a couple years ago. Anything I wanted to achieve the devs or community have made it possible. Insane value at free/$60. Was more than happy to pay for a licence.

100% on the mark! I love Pro Tools and have been using it since the Digi Design days but I have no reason to ever update my perpetual license for Pro Tools 2020.x running on my 2012 Mac Pro which runs flawlessly with my UAD hardware.

Don't care, I never fall in Avid's trap, I use Studio One Pro and Reaper. Good luck, they gonna need it!

I really hope this is thereputic for you because I really love the videos you get unhinged. All of your videos are very much appreciated because there are not a lot of honest pages left but I'm so glad I'm not the only one still feeling rage over avid.

Cubase Pro 11 has been (nearly) flawless for me, and it's beautiful (IMHO). Upgraded from version 9 to 11 and am running it on an M1 Mac MIni, along with their MIDI Control driver (using an A&H SQ-7 mixer as a control surface and audio interface). I'm sure there must be _something_ that makes Pro Tools so popular, but I just don't see it and haven't needed it.

I have PT 2018 and wont upgrade until they come to their senses. Cubase Pro 11 is my main DAW now for over 3 years and it's great!!

Was a Protools user since version 6. Walked away from Avid when they started the subscription push and started screwing the perpetual license owners. Went back to Cubase then cross graded to Nuendo. Couldn't be happier, never looking back. Love the videos keep it up.

Tried Reaper and never looked back. It's a beast with the full capabilities of cutomizability. Don't sleep on it guys. You will not regret it

Thanks for this video. I’m a government worker and Not only have we been hit by the Covid pandemic but now we’re under the threat of being furloughed without pay. So that means I need to shift my funds elsewhere Just to live. that means I have to put any subscriptions on hold until I get paid again. And if the furlough actually goes longer than usual I will not be able to do Music with protools because I didn’t pay the subscription from not being paid Due to the furlough. They really put people like us in a tough spot. And like you said it’s my outlet for my stress and this furlough is very stressful ha ha

I'm probably going to buy an MCI JH-24 soon. One thing I'm really looking forward to is being able to just skip the computer entirely. No more updates, DRM, subscriptions, etc. Yes, tape is expensive - but the simplicity of it is so wonderful. This is a dark timeline we're living on.

I agree they never cared which is why everyone is leaving them. If I was still in Mac I would stayed with logic but I am on windows now and I think studio one will be my way now. I looked at the sale they had and it was all subscription. Your just put light on what I was seeing. Thank you and I will be tuning into you more, happy holidays

Studio One Sphere its a great subscription model, all in for 15$, never looked back.

There's no way I'm paying a monthly/yearly subscription from Avid. I'm still running my old PT11. Once I move to M1, I'll have a to decide who I go with. So far everything points to Reaper or Logic. Just like you, I always liked Pro Tools and I always hope Avid would get its head out of its own ass but I think it's not possible. Even Pro Tools is a hard sell by today's standards, they're way behind on features.

I had PT perpetual until last year. After getting screwed several times by Avid I decided to force myself to look for other options. The kinda dumb way I did was surrendering my perpetual license. It was a risky move but I decided to give myself a 2 year window to leave Avid for good. 1 year has gone by and I still don't see myself leaving PT for good but I'm more and more inclined to make Studio One my main DAW. There are some features and workflow that I believe will never be as good as it is in PT but I think it's just a matter of committing and not look back, like others have said.

I understand when you are hooked in a particular DAW. I love Cubase and even if I use other DAWs, Cubase is always my go to DAW. But would Steinberg really mess up in the future then im no stranger going over to a different DAW.

just dropping this thought here, I am one of those guys with an expired license, and I had that same shock reaction when I found out that there's no option but a subscription, and all the website links even the renewal button take you to a get a subscription. fuckin bullcrap. I even get an educational "discount" and I am like, why do I even have to feel grateful for that? I cannot even use it next year! total absurd. watching waht you are putting out here, has taken all that off my chest, not with AVID any longer. I will most definately go for a new DAW

U are totally right. Companies like Avid Waves etc are a shame. I use pro tools too and feel so bad being slave of them strategy. Its totally unfair and i feel sooo sad angry..cant even express my feelings. I suffer by myself every single day because of it. They helping to make a worst world. Fooling people and slaving professionals. Thanks for this video. BRASILIAN audio comunity with our unvalued money ,but the same want and need to work for love of audio and also for survive really apreciate this kind a video. I've already started learning Logic and LUNA for when my subscription ends. Been with Pro Tools since 2010 and I'm not looking forward to the learning curve of a new DAW but the subscription price is not sustainable at all. Can't support greed.

Just went to the Avid website. The link for perpetual license now errors out and then re links to the subscription option. I've been a Reaper user for about 4 years but will have to be switching to pro tools for about a year. It's paid for so I'm not worried about it...I was seriously considering sticking with Pro tools if I found out I enjoyed it, but looks like I will be switching back to Reaper in 9-12 months...!

Excellent video! Thing is, the end consumer has no clue what DAW was used to produce the music. Use what you like, and start making some music. There's many capable DAWs out there to choose from, and the world has changed drastically. The concept of the industry standard DAW is no longer, especially since the recording and production "factory floor" has become bedrooms, home offices, and practically anywhere with a computer and an audio interface. I bet the "industry" laughed when people started trying to record at home. My, how the tables have turned.

I can run ten times more plugins in Reaper simultaneously than I could in Protools and Studio One for that matter. Don't know why. Don't care anymore.

So glad I have always used Cubase. I never followed the trends or the next great thing. If cubase pulls this move then I would move to a new DAW. We consumers must vote with our feet and dollars and STOP letting these companies give us the shaft with no Vaseline. We have options and stop being lazy and unwilling to learn something new because that is called living life. Thank you Barry for not being the corporate shill that most of these RU-vidrs are.

Yeah.... I own a petucual license of ProTools and Media Composer. I pay yearly on both. Shockingly the Protools yearly maintenance fee is more expensive than the Media composer fee. Generally as a rule of thumb, video people make more money than audio people. The yearly fees don't bother me, I used to own an analog Neve and a Studer studio. My maintenance fees to keep all that running was ridiculous. It seems like nothing is professional anymore? This does make me sad as I was hoping to retire someday and be able to still have my Protools and Media composer to play around with since I bought them!!! Enjoy your videos... thank you

We own one seat of Pro Tools. We use Luna and Logic Pro as our primary DAWs here. We own, and keep fully up-to-date, copies of Pro Tools, Cubase Pro and Studio One so that we can easily work with customers who use those DAWs. If Avid goes to full subscription only we will no longer continue updating Pro Tools and just stop using the version we have when it is no longer compatible with future hardware. To be honest, ever since Avid increased the annual support plan cost to $299 from $199 we have started thinking of leaving Pro Tools behind. This year looks like the year we will no longer be paying Avid any money.

My computer died this year on July 4th. I had to give up my perpetual license because the new Mac OS wouldn't launch it, Grr... I started using Harrison Mixbus 32-C before my computer died to wean myself away from Pro Tools just in case after trying several other DAWs. When this subscription is up, I'm done with Avid after starting my career with Pro Tools AND Waves back in the mid-'90s. There are too many DAW's these days to be upset with Avid but we've all been there. I still have my Digidesgin expansion chassis and mix cards :-). Time for the old dogs to learn some new tricks.

Thank you Barry, you are 120% right - I left AVID behind me last year - no I am happy with Logic - it's a new world, perfectly matched to Apple computers, everything runs smoothly and the possibilities are, as you say, in the Future directed! I feel you pain I really do. Thanks for keeping us up to date tgis us really going to impact what I teach my music production students. What I use in my studio has to be what I teach and Avid is making it increasingly harder to justify.

I’ve been using Logic every since it was Micro Logic, and when Apple purchased Logic I dumped my Protools TDM system and haven’t looked back.

Fellow Lexington area here Barry, you’re cracking me up “preaching to ya brothers and sisters 😂😂”. I quit using protocols after 8, studio one user here and I wouldn’t go back. Drag and drop workflow. Drop a verb on a track and it will automatically create a new bus for that. Great DAW.

I like Pro Tools, but it is just too much money. I started in Tracktion, went to Ableton Live, then Logic, then Pro Tools, and now I’m back to Ableton Live and sometimes Reaper. Love the Pro Tools workflow, but it’s for the wealthy.

Pro tools is really the best daw because of its setup on the mixer window and its editing tools being the most efficient.....outside of that everything else is the same. Honestly if Harrison Mixbus had pro tools editing efficiency it'd be a better daw
