Today's spoiler free anime review covers Macross Plus. The story of Macross Plus was created by Keiko Nobumoto, original creator of Wolf's Rain, and directed by Shinichiro Watanabe, Director of Cowboy Bebop. Although newcomers to the Macross franchise are totally safe to watch this anime, it's a little more complicated as there are two versions of this story. The 4 episode OVA released in 1994, and the film compilation in 1995. I'll be discussing their individual pros and cons towards the end of today's review.

Good review, but how did you not mention the incredible music by Yoko Kanno? Like Cowboy Bebop, it took flashy colors and noise of the action scenes and added pulse altering emotion and tension that neatly synchronized the rhythm of the action with the beat of the music. Its an amazing example of something Japanese cinema has perfected and American film rarely explores. Plus, Kanno's tunes, like that of the Neir series, feels so alien and futuristic, yet catchy, it immerses you, makes you feel like you're really seeing through a window into the future. It's world building like that, that elevates it above it's peers in the genre and it truly captures the tradition of Macross's marriage of action and music.

The movie was how Macross Plus was originally conceived. It was then changed into an OVA. Cannot agree with you at all to the final fight being pointless though. Entire theme comes to a head with it.

You have to wonder if Cowboy Bebop would have ever been made without this, as this was the first title that Shinichiro Watanabe, Keiko Nobumoto and Yoko Kanno worked on together.

i dont think gore cheapens the scene, it felt raw and real, got tears out of me, sad that the ova is missing that scene. Is there an edit that sums the best of both versions or something?

Macross plus is the official sequel to the original Macross tv series. Also, there was a device that let Zentradi/Meltrandi micronize to human size. It was shown in SDF Macross (towards the end of the series).

I dont agree with your gore sentiment, it adds emotional fuel to the scene, you see guld pushing past the safe limits for his body and pushed his fight to catch the ghost. Kawamori did extensive g fore research for this anime. that scene was to portray just the length guld was going to go to protect his friends it's adds much more emotion to the scene seeing him suffer the effects of super high g maneuvers with the theme of voices cello version. You can just feel the pain and bravery of the character.
@bobsamurai
@bobsamurai 2 года назад
That’s what it does, but the same effect could have been achieved without it. It’s out of place for the movie. There are two gore scenes in all of Macross. 1 where an extras head pops off in the original anime and this.
@Bigmike130
@Bigmike130 2 года назад
@@bobsamurai frontier and delta have a bit of gore too, just not 7, zero has the most gore and shock value.
@bobsamurai
@bobsamurai 2 года назад
@Bigmike130 You're right about that, but gore has different implications based on context. Guld was a main character. Blood exists in other Macross anime, but never gore to the extent of bodily destruction to a main character. Like real life, death isn't made more meaningful by watching someone suffer or seeing their organs being destroyed and flying out. Maybe in Game of Thrones, where it's part of the experience. Even then, its the characters development that creates the meaning, more than the death scene. I think scenes like this walk a fine line between being good enough and being too much. If the OVA were like this, I probably wouldn't have mentioned it. Considering they went back about a year later to add this scene, they thought it would be beneficial, and I disagree. I think the effort put into doing this outweighs its narrative benefit, and I'd prefer if they added a scene that further developed his character.

This ended up as a huge cliffhanger for me for several years from 1995. I think I got to the halfway in and Blockbuster didn't have the rest of the episodes!!! It was probably after highschool that I was able to get around to finding the movie version and watched the rest. It didn't disappoint!

The fact they spent more time on the movie correcting some of the art from the OVA to improve the Animation.

I don’t mind the rather sharp shift from character drama to bombastic fighting, though wish they weren’t so heavy-handed on editing. The sakuga was so incredible at the time; if the shift was handled a little better it would have went from an A- to an A imo. Thank you for reviewing a kind of underrated classic OVA.

I agree that the movie version takes a step back from what the OVA series accomplished. The character development is much better in the episode and it overtakes the improvements of the movie version. Macross Pluss the movie tried to do for the OVA what DYRL did for the series in making corrections or at least make it more realistic. While the death scene near the end has some more gore, I don't think it diminished the story because it made much more sense than what happened in the OVA.

Macross Plus was originally conceived as a movie. At the time when it came out it was the most expensive anime ever, by a long shot (IIRC, 5 years after release it was STILL the most expensive anime), which is reflected by how well the animation has aged over the years. I mean the sheer sense of speed, flying and G-forces hitting you is so good I still catch myself holding my breath watching Isamu. I suspect the OVA happened to help spread that cost around. I can't believe you don't mention the OST for which the Macross series is generally known for, and which is fantastic in Macross Plus.
