Every SJ presentation is a masterclass. It's part business lesson, part marketing presentation, 100% sales. Makes me want to go out and buy one 17 years later.
I work in electronics recycling, and someone brought one of these into my workplace the other day in great working condition. Now it's mine, and it's a fun little toy.
This is how you take over a market, you break the rules. The Flash MP3's had smaller and smaller screens. Jobs turns and says ''forget the screen, lets do it this way''. The man was a genius.
240 songs isn't a lot in 2022, but you know what, for a camping trip or even a ski trip, these things are perfect. I think I have mine laying around somewhere, and it still works.
To THIS day I still love this shuffle. that built in USB is one of the best things ever. I effing hate the 3.5 to USB cable or dock from all the other generations. The 2nd gen was good too with the clip, the third one with no button was a stupid failure, the current/4th gen is also stupid because you almost always push a button when you squeeze to open the clip. I love the nano touchscreen, but simple buttons is just so easy to work with.
8:40. Woah. Jesus Christ. In that moment, he effectively KILLED the competition. MORE storage. BETTER interface? LOWER cost!? Honestly it would have gotten a cheer from me just being the SAME price for more features, but to go and price them BELOW the competition? Incredible.
And you can clearly see it from the the design of the new iPod nano :p (true). I think that the success of Apple is also down to these presentations Steve Jobs did, and not just some commercials and that's it. He had passion. Rest in Peace, you deserve it.
Tim is running Apple into the ground. 0 innovation, completely ignoring PRO users. Every product line is completely fucked either by removal of ports or oudated hardware.
Rafael HD Ojeda Ah but that’s not my point, my point is that if you think Steve is innovative, so is Apple under Tim. They’ve only popularised and simplified good but complicated ideas instead of innovating, and I think it’s great like that, no matter which CEO it is. I have an MBA, an Apple Watch and an iPhone btw, so.
I had one of these back then and I just found it in a drawer I havent touched in years. I looked it up to see what year it was from and its so old Steve Jobs was doing presentations on it! Great piece of tech for its time!
The iPod Nano is for those who wanted a shuffle with a screen. Hell now it's about the same size as the shuffle. The shuffle is nice but I can't imagine getting another one. I have the first gen 512MB one and it's great for a small collection of music or for running or whatnot.
Brilliant marketing here. After identifying a navigation problem with the tiny displays in low-end flash players, Apple's solution is to get rid of the display altogether and make you embrace shuffle. You just see the stunned response.
Bond and Beyond I dunno, my iPhone 11 is pretty damn great. Does everything I need it to without hassle. Off topic: isn’t it weird to come back 7 years later and read an old comment?
My first iPod was the 2G iPod Touch MC on Christmas of 2009. So surprise because I ask for a iPod nano. Planning to get the iPod Touch 5G in September.
I have one of these with all preloaded late 90s and early 2000s songs. How do I check the song library? I remember I used to use itunes like 15 years ago to load stuff onto here, but I havent since. I switched to Samsung phones a while back and dont know how the whole itunes to apple music thing works. PC owner here btw. Thank you. Loved this device, time to bust it out again. Brings back memories of my parents, who added all the music for me at the time.
Not sure if iTunes is still an app you can get for PCs, but you might find a copy of the software that still works with Windows 10/11. Apple Music is just the replacement for iTunes, at least on Macs. The streaming service is just added to the side of the ability to purchase and own your music.
I wonder what the other manufacturers were thinking when they saw these presentations, Steve Jobs practically making fun of them and then offering a better device (double capacity) at a lower cost (which is weird for apple standards). Like 99$ for 512mb while the others were 149$ for 256mb.
I think the point was something like... Why have a display at all if it's so small and practically useless. So they didn't put a display and made the "shuffle" the main feature so you wouldn't miss the display too much.
Hey, back then? That was about the price range. Now, you can get a flippin' 16 GB Flash Drive for around $30-$40. Back then, that was the new. Consider the Floppy Disk Drives from a long time ago(you know, the square plastic things that the save buttons are pictures of). They only held around 2 MEGABYTES. And that was the 3 and a half inch ones. Back then, that was not a rip off. Seriously.
@jose060789 My first apple product was the second generation shuffle i got it handed down to me from my brother last year then i bought a 5g nano LAME i returned it and months late as in yesterday i bought a shuffle and a month ago I bought an Ibook.
steve was lying out of his ass,at the time, there were thousands of good mp3 players, such as the creative zen micro,it had a touch scroll that was terrific, and it was significantly cheaper than popular ipods
Sean R I had many Creative but the problem they had was because their market share was so low, there were never any parts available for them even a few years after they had been discontinued and so lots of them are rotting away unused. Some of the more popular ones do have replacement batteries but very few. iPods on the other hand have so so many replacement parts being manufactured for them by third party companies. Also the UI was not as good on them. That was no lie. I despise just dragging music into folders but when I first used my iPod Video in 2005, I never went back!! Partial lie there!
I love apple, but this shuffle is crap. I bought one back in the day and it stopped working after like 2 years! Bought another one and same deal. just a peice of plastic now, unfixable!
