My boy Bondrewd helping Riko and gang to proceed by making her a white whistle. Underrated character.

Bondrewd is one my favourite villains of all time. He's so interesting and disturbingly insane. In his own twisted way he really did love all the children he experimented on, remembering each of their names and personalities. In a really messed up way he even let Prushka go on the adventure with Riko like she wanted. Definitely father of the year!

Bondrewd’s love for Prushka and the other 4 children was genuine. If it wasn’t then he wouldn’t be able to receive “The Blessing”. Bondrewd has long lost his humanity. Think of him as an incomprehensible monster, A proficient machine with an undying curiosity and desire for knowledge. He has no morals or ethics of a human since he himself is no longer a human. He only cares about proficiency and the results. The only reason he is using children is because they take less space and resources. Not because he is evil to the core.

Another Fun Fact: In order to be "Blessed", love needs to be genuine and BOTH WAYS, while one is sacrificisng him/herself for the benefit of the other.

I'd like to point out that Bondew NEVER lied. Especially not about all the love talk. He's just very very VERY fucked up in his priorities. Also SUNARASHII

Umbra hands are subordinate to Zoaholic, but they have their own personalities. Bondrewd can control the umbra hands at will and transplant consciousness at any time. Bondrewd is a kind of software rather than a human being. Zoaholic is the server hardware that makes it possible. As in the case of Nanachi and Mitty, it takes true love and a willingness to sacrifice to receive someone's curse instead. As you can see, Bondrewd became a hallow in the battle against Reg, because of Cartridge, Bondrewd was a true father who really loved the children. He remembers the names of all the victims and their future hopes. As the last trigger for Prusuka to become a cartridge for himself, Bondrewd showed him dying and resurrecting. With this, Prusuka was all set to become Bondrewd's cartridge, and even after becoming Cartridge, she voluntarily chose to bear all of papa's pain. Prusuka became a White Whistle and went on an adventure with Riko's party. Prusuka still loves Bondrewd as a true papa. If Riko's party had broken down zoaholic and killed Bondrewd completely, she wouldn't want to be Rico's white whistle, not functioning as a white whistle. (Prusuka was educated in many ways by Bondrewd. Anatomy, medicine, and even making cartridges. She reffered 'papa pole', which means that she learned in anatomy class, not that Bondrewd did something weird to her. Bondrewd will never do sexual things to children, and will try to be a Ture papa.) (The body that Bondrewd used when he first encountered the Riko group was 'for entertainment' and was not very strong. The body that Bondrewd used when he died and resurrected, by a character named Bidu among Umbra hands, is a masterpiece of Bondrewd's conversion of all kinds of relics, including the tail. They even made it hollow, but the body was eventually destroyed. Bondrewd will be very sad.) That's all I want to say. My words may look awkward because I used a translator. Thank you for coming all the way here. But there are more interesting stories waiting for Season 2.

"White whistles are made of people", when I saw the scene of Prushka's death and remembered this, I realized that it was not just a sad anime, I realized that I was watching something special, the same thing happened to me with Re:zero almost all the episodes those moments where you say 'what a masterpiece I just saw' see you in the next one made in abyss season

Bondrews use of the cartridges basically kept mutating him each time it 'died' for him. just like it did for nanachi when mitty survived the curse. it was giving him power everytime he mutated.

ARG: "How many relics does he have ?" Bondrewd: "Yes"

Just reminder that the way they were using Meinya by the scent to "avoid" the curse, it only worked because the symptoms of 5th layer were the extreme sensory deprivation so only in this layer does it work, since the symptoms of other layers are more... Like a direct hit on the body

In the movie they removed some interesting facts about Bondrewd. There was a moment in manga, where Habo explained who Ozen is, and there is same scene in manga for Bondrewd. The reason everyone call him Bondrewd the Novel or Lord of the dawn is in his methods. When exploration of Abyss almost completely stopped he came, and rejected morals and honour of delvers. If there was dangerous plants or animals, he poisoned, burned, destroyed everything he needed. In just 10 years he builded 5th layer base and paths to previously unknown locations. Basically he started new era in Abyss exploration. He wasn't afraid to sell artifacts, information about Abyss, also he made lot of money selling drugs he invented from experimenting on humans, then used all that money to do more research. Also Umbra hand members joined Bondrewd by their own free will. At the end, Habo says "If there any monsters in the Abyss, without doubt Bondrewd is one of them"

Okay SO *absolutely necessary info that the movie missed to show:* Bondrewd has lived for decades and even hundreds of years, people on the surface have only heard rumours of his existence and he is considered to be one of the greatest scientists/researchers of the abyss. One of the major things as to why he is so hellbent on going to such extreme lengths to understand the abyss is because there is supposedly a curse of the abyss which spreads exponentially farther and farther upwards every 2000 years, so at the end of every 2000 years there is a significant bump in curses seen at the upper levels and it's gradually heading up. Now bondrewd realized that the next bump is like only a few years from now, and so he realized that if he did not sacrifice his humanity for knowledge, basically the entire surface world would be gone by now. Hes like one of the only things in the abyss which is maintaining this frail divide between the curses and the surface above it. And yeah bondrewd absolutely "loves" every single one of his children, because for the blessing to take place- the children have to "hope" to be with bondrewd otherwise the cartridges just won't work. So just like prushka, all those children "hoped" to be with him in one way or another before they turned into cartridges. Now as to address the cruelty of his methods and how he does it to attain them? Honestly its genuinely so incredibly fucked up but you also have to consider the 2000 year thing + the inability of bondrewd to become human again after so many of his own body's sacrifices. Oh yeah another thing, he had to start using bodies of children because his own body and adult bodies won't work as cartridges- probably because the abyss can sense innocence and purity, bondrewd is very complex but the children are not. Another thing is that bondrewd never planned to use prushka as a cartridge until riko and gang arrived, it was only when nanachi made the request for them to go to the sixth layer, was when he decided to go through with it. Its not that he doesn't have empathy, or love or care, it's just that he has gotten so incomprehensible in his obsession for finding a cure for the curses, that he would do anything to fuel that research. Of course does it mean the way he went about it was okay? ehHHHHhHHHh It's like asking, would you want to research 30 days or 3 days and yeah there's also a deadline (2000 year prophecy).

As she wished, everyone went on an adventure together. The party is a unique combination with nothing in common. Human(Rico), Robot(Reg), Hollow(Nanachi), Pet(Meinya), Stone(Prushka), sharing Nanachi's vision(Bondrewd)

Bondrewd isn’t necessarily hostile. As long as you don’t peak his scientific interest, you can technically get by him.

Here you can find interesting information about the things of the Film extrapolated in the various interviews after the 1st screening of the Film - The white-cloaked Umbra Hands are specialized for battle and are armed with very powerful Relics. - Riko actually ate some wall before. - Bondrewd didn't save the Umbra Hands from the Scorpions, because having them die to complete Prushka was his plan all along. - Bondrewd sees through Nanachi's eyes using another Relic and not thanks to the Zoaholic. - Prushka knew Bondrewd was doing various experiments, but he didn't know exactly what they were. - Reg who is not human, he has more humanity than anyone. - Reg's penis hardening is not a sexual thing, but a biological one (he didn't get to the Spermarche). - Bondrewd doesn't blow into his Whistle, but shakes his hands around him and then strokes it to make it vibrate and play (they are not a pair of hands, but two of the same hand). - Bondrewd's line congratulating Nanachi for "Freeing Mitty" (after seeing her light bulb go out), refers to Nanachi that she got free and not to Mitty. - Reg is naked when he is captured, but immediately puts on pants when he is rescued (Nanachi made him put them on before picking him up). - Prushka masturbating (Tsukushi openly shouted it). - The bathrooms don't have doors, but Prushka and the Umbra Hands don't care. - "Papa Pole" is short for "pole used to become a dad" (Prushka was taught this in biology/dissection class). - There are many people who want to become Umbra Hands. - The Guy in the flower field was particularly powerful (as was the one with the tail). - Reg had maggots in his pants (is that where they got some from to use in the first fight against Bondrewd?) - Nanachi is hot. - Bondrewd really Loves his Children. - Riko goes to sleep with the glasses on and Nanachi is the one who takes them off. - Prushka knew there were other children around, but he didn't know what would become of them. - Reg has childlike traits, and him constantly reacting to Nanachi being soft is like a child who gets excited without knowing what he got excited about. - Gueira's personality remained intact throughout (although he was in automatic mode when he died). - The Incinerator can be fired multiple times during the ten minutes before Reg falls asleep. - Nanachi's fists are soft and don't hurt. - Bondrewd's Multiple Eyes with growing tentacles is a Relic. - Umbra Hands that act like robots are in "Auto Bondrewd" mode. - The Four Armed Guy is in charge of controlling the Zoaholic. - Meinya found the Zoaholic because the Relic attracts animals to it. - Bondrewd and Nanachi survived the Incinerator because Reg set it to not affect living things. - Shaker Needles fuse with the target's skin and do not injure them. - Taking a close look at the thing Nanachi puts on Prushka's Whistle, the top should look like a green hat. - The "Auto Bondrewd" Mode ensures that all Umbra Hands have the same information (however, this also makes them slower and is also called "Cloud Bondrewd"). - The Tail is an extension of a Relic called "The Third Arm/Third Works" that becomes an integral part of the user's body. - Reg & Co didn't destroy the Zoaholic to fulfill Prushka's last wishes to stop fighting. - Bondrewd was following Reg & Co in the 4th layer (he saw the fight between Reg and Orb Piercer and that Reg lost the Blaze Reap). - Bondrewd has this adopted daughter that he wants to use in her experiments to get her blessing. - Riko likes to take all the curses of the various layers. - The 5th Layer Curse is loss of sense of Touch, loss of sense of Pain, and self-harm. - Reg has 4 incinerators (he also has them in his feet). - Bondrewd can use his mask to pass his consciousness from one body to another and is immortal. - Curses are taken only during Ascension. - Bondrewd truly loves each of his children and remembers their names. - Reg was possessed by someone's Soul when he was recovering energy and this someone was very aggressive towards Bondrewd. - Prushka was the daughter of an Umbra Hand and Bondrewd adopted her to make into one of her Cartridges in the future. - The Blessing can be taken if a person with whom you have a Strong Bond (Love or Affection) wants to save the other one he cares a lot about (the other person receives the Blessing instead of turning into a Remnant). - The Creation of the White Whistle (Your Worth) is very similar, but in addition to the Affection between the two people, one of the 2 must necessarily want to Sacrifice Spontanely one's life for the Other (Sacrifice is not an Involuntary Act).

Uh boy. We've made it to it. I was looking forward to this.

This is why it's a bit difficult to recommend Made in Abyss even with how much I love it. There's some cosmic horror, some body horror, and some existential horror. But the characters, story, world-building, creature design, animation and of course, music are all top-notch. And come on, you can't tell me Bondrewd is an unforgettable antagonist. Lyza, Ozen, and Bondrewd- the white whistles we know so far have all been so unique from style, design, and personality.

SHAAAAN!!! Pumped for the next season Bondrew one of the best anime antagonists ever

The fascinating thing about this arc is that when you look back at it, you can appreciate the story from a completely different perspective compared with your first impression (which might have been closer to Reg's attitude throughout). I felt really sad at my first watchthrough, but then I read the entire story and re-read the corresponding manga chapters (the adaptation of this arc didn't do the manga justice at all), and it's amazing how much my perception changed when I rewatched it. It turns out that Prushka perfectly got her dream of adventuring with Riko fulfilled with the help of Bondrewd, in the form of becoming a white whistle (and when you think about it, indeed this is pretty much the only possible way for her to "go on an adventure" in the depths of the abyss, since she has no other skills whatsoever), and she even still keeps her consciousness in some way! (Riko also couldn't have proceeded without getting a white whistle of her own.) (Also, Prushka knew of the cartridges all alone, and she always intended to sacrifice herself for Bondrewd's sake.) So this arc is actually not "sad" at all compared to the arcs in S1 (most emotional anime scene for me so far) and S2, just way too bizarre and majestic beyond a first comprehension! The plot and the characters of MiA are so amazingly rich and multilayered. There's probably hardly any other story that quite achieves the same effect so well.

Just you know, this is a passion project from the anime studio and stakeholders and producers. Basically they already promised to adapt the story through, even if the mangaka takes his time.

So, Mitty could not have ended up a white whistle, cause....you know....annihilated completely, first off. Pretty sure Incinerator would delete any colour whistles.

Prushka dream came true. She was able to become white whistle. Oh she meant not the whistle itself!

5th layer curse is messing up with some human senses. Meinya can "guide" someone by her smell, so the "sniffer" won't get desoriented in the way, they hurt themselves. 6th layer curse is totally different thing, it is just death or turning into hollow. I am wondering what curse effect is in the 7th layer... I mean, what can be worse than death or losing humanity? 🤔 I hope u will jump into S2 as soon as possible. Made in abyss is my most favourite anime. I just love all the emotions and mysteries. I hope we will get the answers for all questions in the end. I see this anime as a masterpiece. Animation, soundtrack, storry telling, characters... everything is complicated and connected, but works perfectly so far. I am just sad that the manga is coming out so slowly, but I think that is the reason why is story so complex.

it is impressive how wrong upgriwn people can be when they watch this series/movie. Even my 19 years old nethew has no problems to unterstand the story. Amis call everything they don´t understand "bad" or "evil".... and that are a lot of thhings. Bondrewd isn´t "evil" but a helper to get down to the sixth level. Heis as obsessed of the Abyss as Riiko and her mom.... and maybe as Nanachi. The story is "how far do you fo to reach your goal?" Ozen fixed her limit at the third level to stay as much "human" as possible. Nanachi had no scruples of torturing and kiling the cave divers to find a way to kill Mitty in the past. Does it makes him "evil" or "lgood"? Riko´s mother sacreficed someone, too to mehe him her wgite whistle. Why shozld you wanna meet her at the ground of the Abyss?
