@@Acemeistre The more I ‘learn’ about EVs from pro-EV channels, the more I’m convinced not to own one. Anyway, I don’t own a car anymore so I will await the floods of salty tears from EV owners when vehicle excise duty comes into play in the UK from April 2025. Also, with congestion charging for EVs being introduced at £15 per day in London by the London Labour Mayor from December 25th 2025 ( notice the date and the fact that it is one of the most sacred days in the Christian calendar ). What the Labour Labour Mayor introduces may well be implemented elsewhere in the UK-tax grab incoming. Furthermore, the current income stream from ICE vehicle owners paying fuel duty will have to be replaced by another income stream for EV owners-yes, road pricing per mile, when fuel duty receipts reduce as government diktats reduce ICE vehicle usage, unless, of course, EV owners would be happy to see vital public services being defunded in order that their artificially created cheaper motoring costs can continue. Figures for the previous financial year showed that fuel duty receipts were £24.7 billion. ( www.obr.uk>TaxSpend ) EV owners will then have first hand experience of ‘Stockholm Syndrome’. Perhaps, then, the Labour voting EV owners will wonder why on earth they voted Labour. Turkeys voting for Christmas-pun unintended, but apt anyway.

@@malcolmwhite6588you forgot to mention that bushfires happen more during hot periods than cold periods, so the grid will already be loaded excessively by A/C units, meaning the EVs will be low on charge. Yes sixthsence, a bi-directional charger is required. Don’t have one no-one can suck any power from the EV. Though the incentive to get a bi-directional charger will be paying around 1 cent a KW/h when there’s abundant solar electricity & being paid 40+ cents a KW/h between 6 to 9pm when peak demand kicks in. Cars, well EVs anyway, will go from something that costs money for the convenience of personal on-demand transport to money making pots of gold that can also get you places. Smarter than smart for those ready to take advantage of technology.
@ragtowne

@@markboscawen8330 unless you have solar/wind energy that you feed (sell) the grid, just owning an EV will never “make you money” - electric suppliers are never going to pay you more for electricity than they sell it to you for - so you pay more for electricity you take (buy) from the grid than they pay you to take (sell) the electricity from your EV‘s battery - depending on how often this happens the state of charge of your battery and the percentage of charge that’s reduced over time it’s going to be reducing the total capacity (life span) of your battery - and this doesn’t include the problem of going out to find your EV‘s battery at 20% charge when you need it most after a grid “emergency” - in California they limit the amount of electricity you can put into the grid from solar or wind and they always pay you less than what they charge for

@@ragtowne Tell me you don’t know about supply/demand, arbitrage & Australia’s National Electricity Market without telling me … Agree, an electricity retailer will never sell you back your electricity for less than they pay for it, but they will happily sell it to others for more than what they’ve paid you. So there will be ample opportunity to charge up on very cheap solar power & then sell it later when RE generation isn’t as plentiful & demand is higher so the price paid is higher. While each individual EV will only power a couple of homes, when tens of thousands are hooked up the power supplied will equal the output of a power station. No doubt some will look at their immediate travel plans & the weather forecasts & even wait a few days to sell at an even higher price. Making even more money from their EV’s battery. Overall, the $$$ earned will more than pay for any degradation from additional cycles. Especially as batteries get better & last longer. And with a couple of swipes of an app the EV owner will be able to set how much power they want to sell so there is always enough charge left for their next journey. Now ragtowne, technology laggards will be welcome to keep their ICE car that costs money to run & earns nothing extra as well as paying the top rate for electricity supplied by EVs. A long time ago here in Canada you could get a small break on your electricity bill if you let the Electric Company shut off your electric water heater at times of peak demand. These Cuts were few and far between. And in any case the water heater generally holds a fair bit of hot water. I believe something like this is where the idea for getting EVS to power the grid came from. However, water heaters tend to be full most of the time. And turning off their power doesn't take away any hot water. In most cases the user wouldn't even know. That's very very different from draining your gas tank in the midst of a Country-Wide power failure. Madness indeed

I work at a power station and can tell you first hand just how overwhelmed the electrical grid is. The mains voltage fluctuates greatly and struggles to keep up with the growing population. God help us with the huge loads EV charging will put on it. Fun fact: When those lines were down in February, AEMO had the power export rate at $16,000/MWh for about 5 hours! It dropped to -$1,000/MWh afterward for a bit before resuming normal rates.

As a power station worker MecTeacher you would well understand how grid scale batteries provide FACS services far faster than any mechanical generator can. And as the Hornsdale Power Reserve has already proven, batts save electricity consumers hundreds of thousands of $$ in not having to pay for a large capacity of spinning reserve. As to the ‘huge load’ of EVs. That will be only be a 15% increase in demand when post around 2050 when every* single ICE car is in a wreckers yard & we all drive EVs instead. ‘God’ has ample time to enhance electricity distribution networks to cope. Although it looks like that won’t be as big as task as initially thought. As it’s now technically possible to install grid independent PV solar powering DC to DC EV chargers. These PV systems will cover out-door shopping centre & commuter carparks shading vehicles whilst simultaneously charging hundreds of EVs without affecting the grid by 1 watt. Parking fees including nominal charging costs. * museum exhibits & classic/historic registered cars excepted.
@MecTecher
@MecTecher 2 месяца назад
I understand about those batteries. My concern is whether the local electricity distribution network (and subsequent upgrades) will keep up with all this extra demand from growing population, feed-ins like solar, and now EV charging. It’s just an observation over the years as the typical deviation in mains voltage is slightly larger nowadays compared to years ago.

@@MecTecher The technical & financial success of the HPR in South Australia has prompted investment in hundreds of MW scale big battery projects at other locations in the Australian (east coast) grid. If you have ever wondered why regular people can not get the Spec range, it is probably because the EV is tested with narrow types with low viscosity (harder rubber) tires. this gives much less air resistance and much less rolling (rubber on road) resistance. But less breaking capacity esp in rain. So EVs are probably being sold with softer rubber tires to increase braking which leads to much faster tire wear, which leads to much more dollars and that is why they are talking about the particle emissions from EV tires.

To be fair, from the utilities’ perspective, using EV’s for energy storage in off-peak hours makes perfect sense, and it’s a great use of existing resources. Why spend millions building dedicated multi-MWh batteries which are more prone to spontaneous combustion than smaller batteries when you already have millions of smaller batteries being driven around by people? On the flip side, as an EV owner you could never be sure if your car will be charged when you actually need it. Also, if I paid to charge my (hypothetical) EV with a certain amount of energy, will the utility company give me the money back when they drain my battery without permission?

@@daleviker5884 Fair enough. In my own mind the question was rhetorical.

It's not even the electricity they take, it's the extra charge cycles they put on your car battery that are the true cost.

So in the morning your car screen displays "Thank you for your contribution to the People's Utopian Grid and be sure to call in sick due to a bad discharge from your charging socket. Have a great day!". Then it goes blank becuause the 12 volt battery is now flat as well.
