This video caused quite a stir upon releasing because people said it reminded them of the footage of Lady Di’s last moments. Of course this wasn’t Madonna’s intention, but well. Like you both said, it’s a glimpse at her life and what she has to put up with for being a celebrity. Oh, and by the way, the girl in the end is an actor, not actually Lola. Her daughter was much smaller when the video was shot 😅 in order for Madonna to try and keep her daughter’s private from paparazzi she did something unthinkable: she had a photoshoot by Mario Testino published on Vanity Fair. Amazing photos! This way the world would see Lola and stop trying to take pictures of the toddler on the streets.

This is her personal favorite. Very very personal! Song and video. She opened her 2001 Drowned Worl Tour with this, unusual opener since its so mellow and downtempo but she obviously made it work perfectly. Stunning video!

Yessss! I am glad to see you didn't skip this one. Since there was no official release of that music video here in the United States, it often goes unnoticed or forgotten. The opening scene, the hyenas tearing apart their kill, is a visual metaphor at how the news media and press stalks (and sometimes destroys) a high profile celebrity or person they pursue. There are certain visual elements that echo the late great Princess Diana being hounded by the paparazzi, which some people took issue with. It was done in a subtle way. I found the scenes where the hotel maid snaps and unwanted photo of Madonna, and the surreal scene at the bar booth where the onlooker snatches away Madonna's sunglasses to be so sad, disheartening, yet so true. Thank you for not skipping this one!🙏 I won't spoil the (hopefully) next Ray of Light era music video "The Power of Goodbye" you may react to. But i will. say, if there's one word i would use to describe how she looks..bewitching. Something to look forward to!!

I loved Bedtime Stories because it was the first glimpse of a more mature version of Madonna. Then she had Lourdes and of course, she changed again. She has the newfound maturity and strengthening of her voice along with the softening of motherhood. She had all her ducks perfectly in a row and could do no wrong at this point in her career. Slight hiccups, yes, but nothing like the past. Such a beautiful time and moment she allowed us into.

This song was about being a first time mother, "the face of you" is her daughter, her fame was her substitute for her own mother. Very beautiful. The video she has said was largely inspired by the death of Princess Diana after being chased by photographers. Everyone can possibly relate to this song, even if it is not their experience, if they have eyes to see, being human. I mean, I even related to love songs when I was young before I ever experienced being in love

I've always said that I felt that my life literally began at 31 yrs old with the birth and adoption of my son. I remember feeling as if nothing before him existed or mattered and that my new identity and purpose was him. I have since been blessed with 2 more twin girls. This song has always resonated with me but I cannot imagine what life must be like at times for her.

These was for the longest time my favorite Madonna´s song, I identify with her in her earlier years in the spotlight, craving for greatness for building a life for yourself. Now looking back surviving the 80s in the music industry is an accomplishment that not many can overcome, specially women, she stablished a foundation for everyone after her and even crazier is to think that shes talking to herself in this song and now thats only half of her career till now. The other side of fame. I’ve always loved the scene at the party with the distorted faces. I often feel that way in crowds ( of course it has nothing to do with fame in my case) but on some level this type of emotion makes her more human. I've so been looking forward to your reaction to this song in particular. Its the first track on the album and it immediately demands your attention and says "listen closely, kids, because I've got some important things you need to know" The video was criticized by some for supposedly co-opting the recent death of Princess Diana but really Madonna, as the other "most photographed woman in the world" is the only one who could honestly tell a story like this. Lighter note: she lost her handbag somewhere between leaving the party and running outside, which always kinda stresses me out a little 😂

I love this video and your reaction really did it justice! Interestingly this was the year after Princess Dianna tragically died and I think Madonna made a real connection with her previously and obviously her death in the public eye with the paparazzi (mainly to blame at the time) really hit Madonna hard and it’s portrayed in this video which makes it all the more saddening for me. On another note Princess Dianna was reported to attend the Girlie Show opening in 93 which I think Madonna at the time was aware of !

Drowned World tour was when I saw Madonna live first time. I never forget it. It was so overwhelming and I felt really emotional when this song started and she was rising up with a beam of light.

This is the opening track of the album and it sets the mood very beautifully. Whenever I put the Ray Of Light album on the beginning of this song sort of calms me down and I’m able to listen to the whole album. By the way I think that album is one of the best examples of how to arrange the songs in an order that is just perfect. The album starts slow with this song and then gradually the phase and the rhythm gets more intense and you feel like you are in a club. Then it starts to slow down again and gets to the final song of the album, which is a very beautiful and a haunting track. Madonna and her team must have thought it through over and over again to get the arrangement so perfect. If you don’t have the time to post more reactions before the concert, have a great show ❤ I saw it in Berlin last November and loved it. Hope you have a great time!

Loved your discussions and reflections about this song. The scene in the video where she smiles at the woman in the hallway and she smiles back, then gets her camera out and takes a photo and she runs away is so poignant. It reminds me of story I heard from a fan recently who lived in NY and saw Madonna and Lola in the park, so she stopped and was fussing over how cute the baby was. Madonna was smiling and really loving this interaction, the the fan said "I know you who you are", and Madonna turned around and left the park immediately. The fan, regretted the moment she said it, and realised she should have just kept quiet and let her at least pretend to just be a mother in the park with her bub.

I love this dream bubble of a video. Right at the beginning you see a television screen showing bears tearing apart their prey, and it sets the theme of the story. This was filmed just over 10 months after the Paris car crash that took the life of Diana Princess of Wales. This coming right after the film "Evita" was weird and sort of prescient to the scenes of mourning after Diana's death. It was a very strange time and feeling and this video sort of sums up the entire atmosphere of that time. It was like a dream that moved in slow motion. Madonna's videos are not just commercials for a record, they have always reflected something that she wants to say to the world. Thanks for another beautiful reaction. I love this song so much ❤ The video definitely gave a deeper glimpse into Madonna’s reality and not knowing who she can trust. This album is, in my opinion, Madonna’s most personal album. Motherhood definitely gave her a completely different outlook on life and made her reassess as to what is/isn’t important. I think practicing Kabbalah also had a massive part to play in this stage of her life. ❤

I remember her talking about this video which was not only what she experienced first hand by being followed and chased along the street by photographers, but how she related to the death of Princess Diana tragedy in Paris.

I think a key contributor to her longevity and success in her life and career is her critical thinking that led her to question everything that many take for granted. This led her to establish a strong, core spirituality that led to wisdom and kept her focused and grounded to what really is important. She has no illusions about the superficiality of the world of celebrity, wealth and fame-that she straddles so skillfully without getting “drowned” as many others have succumbed to. Her fall back and sanctuary has always been her family (her children) whose early and her own private life she has fiercely protected from the intrusion and exploitation by the paparazzi culture of the celebrity world. Indeed, raising her children well and imbuing them with the wisdom she has accumulated has been her “new religion” from this era going forward. Your insightful reaction to her messaging here is as always right on point.

One of my favorite songs and videos. Madonna was inspired by the tragedy of Princess Diana to make this video. Madonna is probably one of the few females that could relate to the relentlessness of the paparazzi and (sometimes cruel) public that Diana had sadly endured. I cant wait until you get to hear her version from the Confessions Tour (it blows the drowned world tour out of the water). There are a few promo performances from this era but the CT in my opinion is her best rendition

Madonna, at this point realizing the only people who truly will love (or hate) her for who she truly is, is her children. I don't know if it was actually Lordes in the video, I don't think it is, but Madonna would later go on to have Rocco with Guy Ritchie, then adopt 4 children from Malawi. They often join her onstage. For the celebration tour look out for David on Guitar, Mercy on Piano, and the twins (her youngest) Stella and Estere. I believe Lourdes joined her onstage in London. Rocco has yet to make an appearance this tour so far.

ironically in 1992, Madonna extended an invitation for Princess Diana to move in with her in order to escape being hounded by the paparazzi regarding her failing marriage to Prince Charles. Seemed Madonna felt she was the closest person who could relate to what the Princess was going through after her divorce to Sean Penn.

Drowned World/Substitute for Love" is a song recorded for her seventh studio album, Ray of Light (1998). It was written and produced by Madonna and William Orbit, with additional songwriters including Rod McKuen, Anita Kerr and David Collins. McKuen and Kerr received the credits due to the usage of a sample from one of their songs, "Why I Follow the Tigers". "Drowned World/Substitute for Love" is an ambient pop song which lyrically describes Madonna's spiritual transformation to seek authentic love over superficial alliances. The music video was released for the song, featuring Madonna running away from the paparazzi until she arrives at home. Dressed in black, she is constantly running, even from the other celebrities in a hotel bar. Except for Madonna's, everyone else's face is distorted. In another sequence of the clip, Madonna passes a hotel maid smiling at her. The singer returns the smile when the flash of a camera goes off; the maid has just taken a picture of her. Madonna flees again, running all the way home to her daughter's arms, singing that she has "changed her mind" about being a celebrity. The video faced strong reaction in the media due to the paparazzi chase sequences, a scenario similar to Diana, Princess of Wales's death in 1997. The song was performed in two of Madonna's tours, these being the Drowned World Tour (2001) and the Confessions Tour (2006).
