I love reading all of these comments. No sarcasm. I remember when this song was released and everyone hated it. Every review I read complained about how she was trashing Marvin Gaye's legacy in the worst possible way. I loved it right away. But, I loved Madonna, so anything made me happy. Seeing her successful made me happy. I'm so glad that I'm finally reading the love and respect that this work deserves.

An entire album with Massive Attack was, is, and will never be a good idea - there will be a**holes downplaying Madonna "oh it's a great album only because of Massive Attack". So yes, I'm glad it never happened. We also wouldn't have gotten Ray of Light in 1998. That timeline is perfect for her career history, that's the trajectory. Many things that her fans wish for are unwise.

This collab was a stroke of genius. Aparently Madonna was supposed to sing their song Teardrops, but they thought her voice didn't suit the song. So they gave her this. The orchestra version is absolutely stunning

that's partly true- the Teardrops demo was around by this time but original singer Tracey Thorn wasn't able to commit to the record due to her work with Everything But The Girl. Madonna was considered but, by this point, was already starting pre-production work on Evita and was too busy also to commit.

I remember watching this on mtv and there was no promotion for it. With no social media technology like today, this was like a beautiful mystery. All I remember was that it was promoting both her ballads greatest hits album and the Marvin Gaye covers album. Absolutely stunning cover and video. Madonna never dissapoints.

My mother ordered the 'Something to Remember' soundtrack from Columbia House back in the day. I was about 8 yrs old, out of all the songs on the album this one was my fav. It was dark and ominous and beautiful. My mother always skipped it for some reason haha. Being so young, i didnt know anything about Collabs with Massive Attack and in my teens got re introduced to them, was elated when i discovered they had contributed to this tune. Such a memory. There was almost a chance that Madonna was going to sing on Teardrop by Massive Attack too. One of the guys in the band (Mushroom) sent a demo Teardrop to Madonna and she wanted to sing on it following this collaboration, but the other two members of the band (3D and Daddy G) wanted to go with Liz Fraser of the Cocteau Twins instead on vocals so we imagine what might have been.

Find myself revisiting all these hidden gems more than two decades later. Many people derided Madonna’s collaboration with Massive Attack. But I think this has aged superbly. I’m ready for a return to Trip Hop, it feels very appropriate for the world we’re living in now. The production on this is beautiful. The strings and brass section is powerful, some beautiful harp, and all layered over hypnotic beats. Superb.

You can hear the heartbeat and all the malfunctions of the heart with Massive Attack's sounds, Madonna's voice is the centre of that heart. High profile project that made me purchase the only hip hop album I own "Inner City Blues: the Music of Marvin Gaye". I recommend it, it's worth a listen because it has blues and R'n'B proposed by great artists.

This music video basically sums up how much unrequited love really hurts which I've definitely experienced. It makes me want to reach through the screen and give her a great big hug; the level of hurt that Madonna expresses in this song is so raw that it makes her appear vulnerable in the most glamorous way imaginable. Love it! It's fantastic.

Rare is the occasion when I will opt for a cover version of an original rendition of a given song. But in this case, with all due respect to the late Marvin Gaye, Madonna Louise Ciccone absolutely soars on this track. She understands and succinctly articulates all of the subtle nuances of the lyrics, which tended to get obscured by the production in Gaye's rendition. A high drama masterpiece.
