Live from Tokyo, Miami and Turin (TV broadcast) plus the "Ciao Italia" release (Who's That Girl World Tour, 1987). This is my first comparison video and I hope to make many more. Enjoy and make your comments or petitions! :)
How I wish I could go back in time and see this tour in person along with the Blond Ambition Tour since I was too young at the time…This is the Madonna I love!
I know Blond Ambition is the fan favourite, and I also think it was groundbreaking, BUT this tour has one big plus for me: Her energy went through the roof with this one, no other tour after this one had that electrifying energy and I know her voice wasn't great in this tour, but it was raw and entirely live. Again, something she never achieved in the following tours. I think it is something you had to experience to appreciate it.
Lord, she was beyond thrilling in her prime. Nobody has come close since. Watching this just now, I got goose bumps once again, as I so often used to when she was still fabulous. Thank you, Madonna, for those wonderful years.
and the editing then was so good. i watched this a hundred times when I was a kid. But the COnfessions Tour, I watched once and turn it to a coffee holder, the editing of that tour was abominable.
Yes and this wasn't even her prime. This was the Who's that Girl Tour. Her 'Prime" was Blonde Ambition in 1990/91, and then more 'Prime' Erotica and The Girlie Show, Then more 'Prime' was Ray Of Light, but not so much the tour, also more 'Prime' Music. Since those, the only flash of brilliance was the single Hung up.
@@michaelreilly3513 I don't know...Blonde Ambition Tour was stunning also, but to me a coldness/ice queen vibe had begun to set in by then. In Who's That Girl? Tour I still see a Madonna full of joy and pure, natural charisma who connects eye-to-eye with her audience. Just look at her face as she engages them individually; it's unbridled, eager, infectious happiness. There is still a warmth to her here that I don't see in Blonde Ambition. By then she had begun to think things like saying "fuck" two hundred times was edgy.
@@Brisco1 No, I think she is an embarrassment to herself, her two older children, as well as to her musical/performance legacy. To me she has become the Norma Desmond of the early 21st century. I say this as someone who hung on her every move, word, music, dance for more than 20 years. I bought everything she put out until about 2010. I remember thinking early on that if anyone could figure out how to age with style into and through the late stage of her career, it would be Madonna. I was wrong. Let me know if you want me to and I'll be happy to list all the reasons I feel this way. Her last album, Madame X, and the personae she adopted to promote it, was utter crap. Just terrible. The attempted theatre-venue tour was awful. Cringe-worthy. I did like the first single, "Medellin," even though a lot of the video was embarrassing too. Perhaps the utter bottom of the barrel for her over the last ten years was "Bitch, I'm Madonna." I wanted to slash my wrists.
damn, the whole performance of this song was seriously calculated that even some nuances that seemingly choreography adlibs were consistent in 4 different acts. This is amazing.
She practices to death in all of her tours including this upcoming tour that's why at some point her body would just have to give in. But she's a warrior and she'll soldier through as always. Her stamina and discipline is unparalleled to any performer past and present.
Saw this concert twice in nyc. Madison Square Garden. 16th row ...tons of us ran right up to the stage. I was a few feet from her. I almost fainted. I can almost be right there today again if I close my eyes.
Been waiting for this for years. One of her best entrances. The chair , the bass line the anticipation, the brutal and elegant movement. The costume the lighting. Nice to see her energy in each city, different in each and slight differences in her punctuation of this incredible song. Magic. X 🎬🎥
Overwhelming bunch of work this lady did. That's how she got a distinctive presence in music business. Put so many things together: live singing, designer class wardrobe inspired in old glories of golden movies era, choreography, theater-like stage to name the most obvious. Most of the time we don't even think what an artist has to work to put an act on stage.
If you ever wondered why Ciao Italia combines footage from multiple concerts, just take a look at the RAI broadcast from the Turin show (bottom left) during the opening sequence. You can see how badly they messed up the projections and the backlit shadowplay, there was no way this would have made the commercial release of this tour given how perfectionist Madonna can be.
Just compare the stadiums in Tokyo and Turin too, it's odd that the Japanese people were just seated in their chairs (even in the baseball field) of the Korakuen Stadium (that is now demolished) waiting for the concert, while Turin has a track and field stadium (that was renovated for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games) with crowded Italian people who wanted to see the show and singing before the show starts, there was no seating arrangement in the field compared to the Tokyo show. If you wanna see the original TV broadcast premiere filmed in Turin, Italy here's the link: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LOk3bXc21HA.html
I actually always wondered why the projections from Lempicka just worked in the very beginning of the tour (for what i've seen in footages) and it was so screwed in the Turin show and other ones. Also I never got what happened with the golden pants in the Turn show, they were suddenly gone and replaced with the black ones. At any rate. an amazing and mindbowing show. Madonna in the era that turned her the queen
@@eduardochavacano garbage she just had great writers (Holiday, Like A Virgin were not written by her) the record company pumped a whole lot of money to promote her she was lucky oh yeah and she got on her knees a fair bit too of course ;) such talent don't you think?
@Skip- Ad Hey Skip You mean a top selling pop music act actually had a great deal of record company promotion and also recorded some songs written by other songwriters? Wow that’s super shocking. I bet that NEVER happens. Actually it’s essentially the case, to some degree, in almost every act to reach superstar status. Very few recording artists don’t collaborate with outside writers and producers and many choose songs written entirely by other artists at times. You’re basically describing the music business. If they’re big, you can bet your ass they’ve had a label promoting the hell out of them. Also, regardless of how much support a performer gets from their label, if the artist becomes huge it’s because they’ve managed to resonate with the record-buying/concert-going public. No amount of promotion will ever guarantee that. And no one will deny luck factors into success but that’s the case with all big acts. They ALL got lucky. As for your assertion of sexual favors being traded for industry favors, I am guessing you were in the room the time(s) this occurred, in the case of this performer? You seem to be asserting it with a degree of certainty which insinuates you were actually there. So, you were there?
Virgin Tour was the best for me. I know everyone likes BA and Confessions, but Virgin was amazing vocally, and Madonna was an icon. Girlie Show was just magic, like the theatre. Those 2 tours have special places in my heart.
If you look at the opening scene, you can see the skyline of Tokyo and the Korakuen Stadium (that is now demolished) with the Tokyo Dome still under construction that time and even the Japanese people seating in their chairs (even in the baseball field) waiting for the concert; it made you believed that the aerial view was shot in Turin, Italy, but it was not; Turin, Italy is surrounded by the Alps, no skyscrapers, and even a baseball stadium. In Turin the venue was held in a track and field stadium (that was renovated for the 2006 Winter Olympic Games in Turin) with crowded Italian people who wanted to see the show, there was no seating arrangement in the field compared to the Tokyo show.
Wow this must have taken your long time to do. The Who is that girl tour was my very first Madonna tour. she has toward 11 times and I have seen her 10 out of the 11 Tours the only Madonna Tour I missed was the virgin tour 1985 other than that I have been to her WTGT 1987, BAM 1990, TGS 1993, DWT 2001, RIT 2004, Confessions 2006, S&S 2008, MDNA 2012, RHT 2015, MXT 2019. The Who’s Thar Girl Tour is in my top 5 favorite Tours & for a few reasons. 1- it was my 1st Madonna tour 2nd because she performed 2 of my Fav songs “White heat” & “The look of love” & she’s never performed them again out of the 9 tours that followed this tour. The same thing when I saw her BAM Tour & she performed “Rain” & “Oh Father” 2 more of my Fav songs & she’s never performed any of these amazing 4 amazing songs. I’m very surprised that she’s never performed rain, oh father or the look of love because 3 are 3 absolutely beautiful songs & even though they never went to # 1 most Madonna fans will agree with me when it comes to “The Look Of Love” & “Rain” & “Oh Father” as being some of their favorite songs by her. The following songs I love but some have been performed so many times that she could do some that she’s either never done or has only performed them 1-2 X’s & the songs are 1- Holiday-8 X’s 2-Dress you up-4X’s 3-Like a Virgin-5 X’s 4-Into the Groove-6 X’s 5-Lucky star- m4 X’s 6-Material girl-4 X’s 7-Vogue-6 X’s 8-La Isla Bonita- 6X’s & yes I no the fuser classic songs but it would be awesome to see her perform things that she’s either never performed before or only 1 or 2 times.
The official release looks so terrible because of the editing of 3 shows that made us believe that it was all filmed in Turin, Italy, since the Turn gig lacked additional cameras and crane shots surrounding the stadium compared to Tokyo. And If they ever gonna rerelease the Turin show in Blu-Ray, it needs to be re-edit and restored by Madonna's editors like Danny Tull who did the editing from the Confessions Tour to Rebel Heart Tour, or Benny Trickett, the 2019 editor of Pink Floyd's Delicates Sound of Thunder and Pulse (that both featured new and unseen takes from several camera angles as part of the Pink Floyd - The Later Years Box Set and for standalone releases). I would really love to see the shots (including closer shots of all band members at key moments of their playing) kept from the original Italian TV broadcast and the official DVD release combined, with different camera angles from the Turin show and the shots from the Tokyo and Florence shows (used in the official release) that needs to be kept or replaced with the shots seen from the original TV broadcast in Turin to make it almost faithful to the original Italian TV broadcast.
The older tours definitely need a proper transfer. Not everything can be improved, but with proper coloring, re editing and a new audio mix it would be awesome.
I felt cheated after buying Ciao Italia VHS finding out that the opening was identical with Tokyo's Who's That Girl which I had bought a few months earlier with my limited pocket money available. That really hurts for a 16 year-old teenager 32 years ago.
If anybody was wondering, Ciao Italia was edited together from 3 different shows. The parts in the Ciao Italia one that don't come from the Tokyo or Turin show are from the Florence show.
PS It's easy to tell them apart, because in the Tokyo show she has short hair in the Florence show she was wearing a gold necklace and her hair was less puffy
@@kumada84 The fact is that they used Turin, Italy (which was broadcast in European countries) as the main basis for the official release. Some of us believe that all the footage was filmed in Turin, Italy. In the opening scene, it featured Tokyo's skyline, the baseball stadium that is now demolished, and even the Japanese people seating in their chairs waiting for the concert; it made you believed that the aerial view was shot in Turin, Italy, but it was not. @@philippeflores6672 I like the part where they make it look like they stated playing Into The Groove while the audience was singing by cutting the Turin and Florence shows together, which is something they probably never would have done 😂 (notice the disappearing necklace) Also until I saw this video I either never noticed or forgot that Ciao Italia uses some different angles from the TV version of the Turin show
Ciao italia dvd release was put together using footage taken from the Tokyo Japan show and the turin show and Florence show,,,,, so it's not really live in Italy,,, don't know why they didn't just release the Japan show wich was broadcast on Japan tv
I always thought it was because her ancestors were from Italy, and it made it seems special in a way. The Virgin tour was filmed in her hometown, and I wouldn't be surprised if the upcoming tour video focuses on Lisbon. I saw the show in Florence (WTG), and it was pretty exciting to see that the city was all decked out for her... posters in the windows and stuff. The night before, or sometime before that show, we all sat around the tv and watched it live on Italian TV. I had already seen the show live earlier that summer outside of Boston. Was a great memory for sure.
This concert was OK. But just 3 years later with the Blond Ambition Tour in the summer of 1990 she redefined the live music concert. She wisely dropped the kid for Open Your Heart. That concert opens with the iconic set design, choreography, sound & lighting design of Express Yourself then segues into Open Your Heart. The only part of that concert that's off is the Dick Tracy interlude. That didn't age well. The concert ends with Holiday with her wearing that polka-dot outfit and the encore is one of the best live performances of Vogue. Here's my list of favorite Madonna concerts: 1) Blonde Ambition, 1990 2) Confessions, 2006 3) Sticky & Sweet, 2008/2009 4) Girlie Show, 1993 5) Who's That Girl, 1987 6) The Virgin Tour, 1985 7) Re-Invention, 2004 8) Drowned World, 2001 9) MDNA, 2012 10) Rebel Heart, 2015 And I haven't seen Madame X yet.
I'd probably rank them Confessions, BAT, Girlie, Reinvention myself. I'd rank Rebel Heart 5th, but only because I saw it live (the recording is terrible) But I do want to point out she ended BAT with Keep It Together, one of my favorite live performances ever
c c , Blonde Ambition was THE BEST (for me) and I disagree with you regarding Dick Tracy interlude aging badly, I thought and still think it was BRILLIANT. And as one of your other commenters mentioned, Keep it together/ the family stone was amazing.
Whamegafan35 Florence and Tokyo as well. A real mess, especially because she had shorter hair in Tokyo and also trousers are different: golden in Tokyo, black in Turin and Florence.
@@dan_leo also it is because of the terrible editing of 3 shows for the official release in order to make us believe that it was all filmed in Turin, Italy.
The filming location of the music video with the exterior shots of the strip club were at 1314 court street LA California. Love to see some behind the scenes and where the props went!
Gee, Italy looks a lot like Japan. Great comparison video though, Not sure why it was hacked up for the home video release, really doesnt make sense, but her best tour.
@@dan_leo me too, it is because of the terrible editing of 3 shows for the official release in order to make us believe that it was all filmed in Turin, Italy.
i think i saw the Yokohama version on a betamax tape then... so decades later i was outside the grounds of the Yokohama stadium and wanted to kiss the land under my feet.
